Its interchangeable back and accessory mount set it apart, but the trade-offs are significant: there is no NFC, protection is only IP52, audio comes from a single speaker, and the main camera lacks optical image stabilization. It is best for design-minded buyers who can live without those features—not for shoppers who need tap-to-pay, stronger water protection, or a longer update commitment.
What makes the CMF Phone 1 different?
CMF’s defining idea is a phone you can customize physically as well as through software. The rear cover is interchangeable, and a dedicated Accessory Point accepts the company’s stand, card case, or lanyard. Nothing’s official product page describes these accessories and their compatibility. The system is a meaningful reason to consider the phone if you plan to change its look or use an add-on; otherwise, it is less important than the features you use every day.

The design also comes with practical compromises. A modular back does not make the handset rugged: its official rating is IP52, not waterproofing or protection for immersion. The standard version weighs 197 g; the vegan-leather version weighs 202 g, according to Nothing’s European specifications.

On paper, the core hardware is strong for an everyday phone. Nothing’s Europe product page lists a 6.67-inch Super AMOLED LTPS display with 1080 × 2400 resolution and an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz. The phone uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 5G processor, with eight cores running up to 2.5 GHz. WIRED reported no lag or stutters during its 2024 review, attributing that experience to the processor, 8 GB of RAM, and Nothing OS optimization; that is a reviewer’s observation, not a guarantee for every workload.

Nothing lists a 5,000 mAh battery, 33 W wired charging, and 5 W reverse wired charging. It does not support wireless charging. GSMArena characterized battery life as excellent in its verdict, while 91mobiles said its tested battery lasted a full day depending on usage. Those are review assessments, not a promise of a particular runtime: screen brightness, network conditions, apps, and usage affect endurance.
What are the CMF Phone 1’s camera and audio limitations?
The rear system pairs a 50 MP main camera with a portrait sensor; the front camera is 16 MP. Nothing lists video recording support up to 4K at 30 fps. GSMArena flags the lack of optical image stabilization (OIS) on the main camera as a drawback. That matters most if you want steadier handheld shots or video; the specification alone does not establish image quality across different lighting and scenes.

There is one loudspeaker, rather than stereo speakers. That is a notable compromise for watching video or playing audio through the phone without headphones, but less relevant if you usually use earbuds or an external speaker.

No. NFC is listed as absent from the handset in Nothing’s European specifications. If you depend on tap-to-pay, transit passes, or NFC-based pairing, treat this as a decisive limitation rather than assuming an accessory adds NFC to the phone.

Nothing describes its card case as supporting contactless payment, and Stuff noted that it can provide a similar practical option. That is not the same as native NFC: payment availability and behavior depend on the relevant service, bank, and region, so verify that the card case works for your intended use before relying on it.
What software support does Nothing promise?
The launch-era software was Nothing OS 2.6 based on Android 14. Nothing’s product page states: “Stay up to date with 2 years of major Android updates and 3 years of security updates out of the box.” That is the manufacturer’s published support commitment, not confirmation of the handset’s current Android version or security patch level. Check Nothing’s current support information and the specific phone’s update status before buying a used or older-stock unit.

| Software preference | Nothing OS and the CMF/Nothing ecosystem. | Nothing Phone (2a) is a step up within that ecosystem, at a higher review-time price according to GSMArena. |
| Current price and availability | Check local offers for the exact configuration. | Not established by the July 2024 review; its prices are historical. |
Use those models as a shortlist, then compare current local prices, warranty terms, and exact configurations. Review-era prices do not establish what any phone costs or whether it is available now.
Verdict: Is the CMF Phone 1 worth buying?
Choose the CMF Phone 1 if the customizable design is a real draw and your priorities are a smooth everyday experience, a high-refresh-rate AMOLED display, and strong battery capacity on paper. Its accessories make the most sense when you expect to use them, not simply because they exist.
Look elsewhere if you need NFC, stronger ingress protection, stereo sound, OIS or a more versatile camera system, or a longer software-support commitment. For a buyer who values those features more than the CMF’s design, the compromises outweigh its most distinctive advantage.
