Then check background limits, turn off features you are not using, and consider signal or recent setup activity before assuming the battery is failing. Menu names and available options vary by model and software version.
1. Find which apps are using battery
Open Settings, then look for Device care or Battery and device care. Tap Battery and review the usage details to identify apps consuming power. Samsung says the screens and labels can differ by Galaxy model and software version, so use Settings search for “Battery” or “Device care” if the path does not match your phone.

Check for an app with unusually high use, especially if you have not been using it. A high figure is a clue, not proof of a fault: an app may have been active for a legitimate reason. Samsung’s guidance recommends reviewing battery usage as a first step in finding the cause. 2. Limit apps that do unnecessary background work
If an app you rarely use is continuing to run in the background, check for Background usage limits in Battery settings. Depending on the device, Samsung offers options such as putting unused apps to sleep, reviewing sleeping apps, and adding apps to a deep-sleep list. A deep-sleeping app runs only when you open it.

Apply restrictions selectively. A messaging, email, health, or security app may need background activity to sync or deliver timely alerts. Restricting it can delay or prevent notifications and updates. Samsung also provides a Never sleeping apps option on supported devices for apps that need to remain active. Samsung’s optimisation guidance explains these background-use options.
3. Switch off features you are not using
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS or location services, and automatic syncing can contribute to battery use. Turn off only the features you do not need at that moment; they are not automatically the cause of a drain, and disabling them can interrupt connected devices, location-based services, or syncing.
Look in Settings for the relevant controls or use the Quick settings panel. If battery use improves after changing one setting, you have a useful clue; change settings one at a time rather than disabling everything at once. Samsung lists these activities among potential contributors to consumption in its battery troubleshooting guidance.

4. Use Power saving mode when you need longer runtime
Power saving mode is a broad, temporary way to reduce consumption, rather than a diagnosis of which app is responsible. Samsung says it can restrict background data for unused apps and disable high-power features such as Always On Display. Depending on your settings and model, background activity or notifications may be limited.
To find it, open Settings → Battery and look for Power saving mode; the exact path and available controls vary. Use it when the extra runtime matters, and review which functions it restricts if an app stops syncing or alerting as expected. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide describes the feature’s effects.

- New setup or optimisation: A recently set-up phone may be doing background work.
- Weak or unstable reception: Poor network signal can contribute to faster drain.
- Background apps: Apps may continue to use power when you are not actively using them.
- Battery condition: A battery’s usable capacity can decline with repeated charging and discharging.
Samsung does not give a universal settling time for post-setup activity in the guidance reviewed, so avoid assuming that every new phone will return to a particular battery pattern after a fixed number of days. Samsung UK explains that battery capacity gradually decreases with repeated charge-discharge cycles and that lost capacity cannot be restored through settings. Samsung Members includes Phone diagnostics, with a Battery status test on supported devices. Open the Samsung Members app, go to Support, and choose Phone diagnostics; labels may differ by version. Samsung’s current US support page also says Device care diagnostics are available on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later.
If a diagnostic indicates poor battery condition, or the drain continues after you have checked apps and settings, contact Samsung-authorized service about inspection. Software settings can reduce avoidable consumption, but they cannot restore battery capacity that has already been lost.
