Neither Cloudways nor DreamHost is a universal winner. Cloudways suits people who want a managed cloud-hosting workflow with a choice of underlying infrastructure and developer tools. DreamHost offers more distinct hosting types, from shared web hosting to managed WordPress and VPS plans with or without root access. The better fit depends on the specific plan, how much server administration you want, and the total cost and backup terms.

Cloudways and DreamHost are different kinds of hosting choices

Cloudways is a managed platform layered over cloud infrastructure providers. It lists DigitalOcean, Google Compute Engine, and AWS, and provides tools for deploying and managing applications on that infrastructure. DreamHost sells several hosting families, including shared Web Hosting, DreamPress managed WordPress hosting, Managed VPS, VPS, and Dedicated hosting. A DreamHost shared plan is not a like-for-like alternative to a managed cloud server, so compare the plan that matches your workload and management needs.

Decision point Cloudways DreamHost
Hosting model Managed hosting platform with a choice of listed cloud infrastructure providers Multiple plan families, from shared Web Hosting to managed and unmanaged VPS, Dedicated, and DreamPress
Server control Platform for managing servers and applications, with provider choice and vertical scaling VPS includes root access and customer-managed configuration; Managed VPS is maintained by DreamHost without root access
Application workflow Applications including WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Laravel; Git integration, staging, and cloning DreamPress is managed WordPress hosting for one website per plan; other capabilities depend on the plan
Billing model Three-day trial, then charges depend on provider, server size, bandwidth, and paid add-ons Displayed Web Hosting tiers have promotional and renewal pricing; verify the current amount, term, and geography

These distinctions are based on each provider’s product descriptions, not a controlled performance comparison. Cloudways describes its platform features, while DreamHost lists its hosting plans.

Choose Cloudways for cloud-provider choice and a managed workflow

Cloudways is worth considering if you want to select from its listed infrastructure providers while using a platform for server and application management. Its feature list includes vertical scaling and one-click deployment for applications such as WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Laravel. It also describes Git integration, team access, projects, server and application cloning, staging, and one-click backup and restore. Those tools may be useful for developers, agencies, and site owners who want a managed workflow without giving up provider choice.

Cloudways’ billing is usage- and configuration-dependent rather than a single flat price: after the three-day trial, the bill depends on the infrastructure provider, server size, bandwidth, and paid add-ons. The company says Let’s Encrypt SSL is free and mentions managed migration options and 24/7/365 expert support for platform-related matters. Its FAQ guidance is that 1 GB servers are primarily for testing or staging and that it recommends 2 GB or more for live sites; that is Cloudways’ own guidance, not an independent sizing benchmark. Check backup-storage charges when estimating cost. Cloudways’ FAQ covers its trial, billing, support, and server guidance.

Choose the DreamHost plan by the responsibility you want

DreamHost’s Web Hosting tiers are called Launch, Growth, and Scale. Their differences include items such as site count, storage, and databases, so confirm the current inclusions for the tier you are considering. DreamHost’s documentation says email is free for the first three months on each tier, after which a paid Email plan is automatically added. Its sales page displays introductory and renewal prices; because these can change and depend on term and geography, check the live offer rather than relying on an old quoted price. DreamHost’s plan page shows its current Web Hosting offers.

For more control, DreamHost’s plan guide distinguishes VPS from Managed VPS. VPS provides root access, but the customer is responsible for server configuration, maintenance, and security. Managed VPS is maintained by DreamHost and protects the customer’s RAM resources, but does not provide root access. Shared Web Hosting is a different category: DreamHost notes that another site’s unusually high CPU use can affect shared resources. DreamPress is managed WordPress hosting configured for one website per plan. DreamHost’s hosting guide explains these plan types.

Compare backup retention, fees, and restore options

Do not treat “automated backups” as a complete comparison. Cloudways describes automated or on-demand offsite backups and one-click restore, but its feature description does not establish a single retention period for every configuration. Its FAQ notes that backup storage can cost extra. Confirm the retention and fee for the server setup you plan to use.

DreamHost’s hosting FAQ reports average retention of two weeks for website backups and five days for database backups; long-term backups are not included in a hosting plan. If you need to keep backups longer, account for a separate backup arrangement and verify the restore process that applies to your plan. DreamHost’s hosting FAQ describes its backup retention; Cloudways’ feature page and FAQ describe backup and storage terms.

Which host should you pick?

  • Consider Cloudways if you want the listed cloud-provider choices, scaling, application deployment, and tools such as Git, staging, and cloning in a managed platform. Budget for usage-based charges and any paid add-ons, including backup storage.
  • Consider DreamHost Web Hosting if a shared hosting plan fits your site and you want to choose among its current Web Hosting tiers. Review site, storage, and database limits, plus the email billing change after the first three months.
  • Consider DreamPress if you want DreamHost’s managed WordPress option and its one-website-per-plan structure fits your needs.
  • Consider DreamHost Managed VPS if you want DreamHost to maintain the VPS and do not need root access; consider VPS if you want root access and are prepared to manage configuration, maintenance, and security yourself.

There is no substantiated speed or uptime winner here: the available product information does not provide an independent, controlled, like-for-like test of the two services. Choose based on the exact plan’s resources, management boundary, billing, and backup terms—not a blanket claim that one brand is faster.
