Cloudflare’s new cf command-line interface is an open beta that aims to make more than 3,000 Cloudflare API operations available through one searchable CLI. Its broad, generated command surface is paired with natural-language command search and JSON-first output, features intended to make those operations easier for both developers and AI agents to discover and use. It does not mean every operation is equally polished, available to every account, or a reason to migrate a working Wrangler project immediately.
What Cloudflare’s cf CLI is
Cloudflare announced cf on September 28, 2026, describing it as an open-beta CLI for operating Cloudflare products through a unified command interface. It can be installed globally with npm i -g cf. The official launch announcement is by Matt “TK” Taylor and Samuel Macleod; Cloudflare’s CLI documentation landing page is the place to check for current usage instructions, since beta details can change.

The key change is breadth. Cloudflare says cf exposes more than 3,000 API operations, compared with about 280 command paths in Wrangler. Those are not like-for-like counts of hand-designed commands: Cloudflare says cf commands are generated from API schemas using Forge, the pipeline that also supports API documentation and SDK generation. The number describes the intended reach of the interface, not a guarantee that every operation has the same level of ergonomic polish or is enabled for every account and permission set.

A large command catalog solves only the coverage problem. Cloudflare’s design also targets two practical obstacles: finding the right operation and handling its output. In its launch post, Cloudflare says, “JSON is the default interface, pretty printed for humans and condensed for agents for maximum context savings.”

Search helps locate operations
cf cli search accepts a natural-language request and searches command descriptions and parameters to suggest likely matches. Cloudflare says its help flow directs new users toward search. This is meant to reduce the burden of memorizing a large command tree, but a suggested command is not proof that it is the correct or safe operation for a particular account or production change.
JSON makes results machine-readable
JSON output can be filtered and consumed without parsing a terminal table, which is useful for scripts and agent workflows. The combination matters: generated coverage makes more API operations reachable, search helps users find them, and structured output gives downstream tools a predictable format. Neither JSON nor command search verifies the target resource, checks whether credentials have appropriate scope, or makes a consequential change safe by itself.

Cloudflare reports that agents accounted for 48% of Wrangler usage in the week before the announcement, versus one quarter (25%) in March 2026 and single-digit percentages in 2025. These are Cloudflare’s own usage figures, not an independent survey or a measure of how well agents completed tasks. They help explain the company’s emphasis on search and JSON, but do not establish that an agent can safely execute every API operation.

The configuration and local-development changes initially focus on Workers. Cloudflare presents cloudflare.config.ts as a TypeScript configuration that editors and agents can inspect, with language-server feedback, and describes Vite as the default local development path. These are product design goals; they do not demonstrate that every deployment becomes safer or faster.

Migration is not all-or-nothing. Cloudflare says cf migrate converts existing Vite-based Workers to the new configuration. During the beta, the CLI can still delegate development and deployment to Wrangler for JavaScript Workers that rely on esbuild and for Rust and Python Workers. A project that does not fit the documented migration path, or depends on a particular build workflow, should be checked against current Cloudflare guidance before its production process is changed.
Should you switch from Wrangler now?
For a new project or someone who wants to explore broader Cloudflare API access, trying the open beta in a non-production context is a reasonable way to evaluate its search, JSON output, and Worker workflow. For a stable production project, there is no need to treat the announcement as a migration deadline. Confirm support for your language, build tools, and deployment path in the current documentation, then test the migration and resulting deployments before changing the established workflow.

Cloudflare says it plans a final major Wrangler release after the cf beta and 18 months of Wrangler maintenance after the beta ends. That is a plan announced at launch, not a calendar date from which a support end can currently be calculated. The breadth claim also spans different Cloudflare products: the announcement cites Workers, logs and observability, Access, domains, and WAF as examples, but account plans and permissions may affect which operations are available to a given user.
