Cloudflare’s new agent-oriented Containers design lets a Durable Object choose a sandbox’s image and compute size when a task starts. In ComputeSDK’s independent benchmark of 100 concurrently launched sandboxes, the new durable_object scheduling policy reached a median client-side time-to-interactive of 648 milliseconds—down from 4.049 seconds on the previous path. That is a benchmark result, not a guarantee that every sandbox or workload will be ready in 648 ms.
What changed in Cloudflare Containers?
Cloudflare’s September 30, 2026 announcement shifts container setup from deployment-time configuration toward task-time workspaces. With the new durable_object scheduling policy, application code can select an image and instance type when a sandbox starts, using the native ctx.container API. That gives an agent task a way to request a suitable Linux environment on demand rather than relying on one fixed container configuration.

Cloudflare frames the Durable Object as the workspace’s identity, state, and lifecycle controller, with the Container providing the Linux environment. One pattern keeps the agent in the Durable Object and uses the Container as its workspace; another runs the agent inside the Container while the Durable Object supervises it. These are architectural options, not a claim that one layout fits every application.
As Cloudflare’s four named authors put it in the announcement: “Agents don’t deploy sandboxes ahead of time. They create sandboxes on demand, for each task, expect them to be ready immediately, and be able to pause and resume.”

How fast are the new sandboxes?
ComputeSDK’s independent Burst TTI benchmark, cited in Cloudflare’s announcement, launched 100 sandboxes concurrently and measured client-side time-to-interactive. Its results compare the previous scheduling path with the new durable_object policy:

The median is the midpoint of that test’s measured starts; the 95th and 99th percentiles show slower results within the same benchmark. They do not establish a universal upper bound, and the figures are not a service-level promise for an individual task.

Cloudflare also reports a separate preliminary burst test: 100,000 Containers started in 5.387 seconds across six locations on a single account. That is Cloudflare’s own test, not ComputeSDK’s benchmark, and its burst figure is not an apples-to-apples substitute for client-side time-to-interactive.

Cloudflare says the previous startup path required the global control plane to resolve application configuration, find capacity, and coordinate placement. With durable_object scheduling, the Durable Object begins the request for capacity. The service looks for a host on the same machine first, then broadens its search within the same location if needed; it also favors hosts that already have the requested image or snapshot locally.

Cloudflare attributes the faster starts to a combination of runtime behavior: restoring a prepared virtual machine that has not yet been assigned, reusing networking and filesystem setup, batching repeated operations, and not waiting for services the first command does not need. These are the company’s explanations of its implementation, not independently verified engineering findings.
What image can an agent use without a Dockerfile?
Cloudflare’s cloudflare/debian-trixie image includes Debian Trixie Slim and Node.js 24.20.0 LTS. Cloudflare says developers can launch a Linux sandbox without first writing a Dockerfile, building an image, or pushing one to Cloudflare, then use exec() to clone a repository, install packages, and configure software for the task. Its example starts the container with this.ctx.container.start, selects the standard-2 instance setting, and enables internet access with enableInternet: true.

Cloudflare says it distributes and prepares this controlled image across eligible hosts ahead of requests, avoiding the need to download and unpack the base image while a user waits. Task-specific repository contents and packages can still require setup after launch.

How do filesystem snapshots help agent workflows?
Filesystem snapshots are in public beta. An agent can prepare a workspace and its dependencies, save that filesystem state, release compute while the task is paused, and restore the workspace later. Cloudflare describes snapshots as immutable and reusable, so multiple independent sandboxes can start from a common prepared baseline.

That model supports both session continuity and controlled comparisons: teams can preserve a coding environment between sessions or vary prompts, models, skills, or versions while keeping the starting files and dependencies constant. Snapshot availability does not itself establish how much time or compute a particular workflow will save.
Who can use the features, and what is native-only?
Cloudflare says the new scheduling policy is available to everyone in public beta. The faster startup path, runtime image and instance selection, and filesystem snapshots are available only through native ctx.container; they are not capabilities of the legacy Container or Sandbox classes.
The announcement names integrations for Cursor Cloud Agents, Devin Outposts, and the OpenAI Agents API, and mentions Base44 and Kilo Code among agent-workspace users. Those mentions identify examples in Cloudflare’s announcement; they do not establish that every named product uses every new capability.

Cloudflare says it will maintain the legacy Container and Sandbox classes through December 31, 2026. Existing deployments will continue running after that date, but those classes will no longer receive updates. The announcement describes Sandbox SDK 1.0 as utilities that work inside a developer’s own Durable Object rather than as a base class.
Migration is most relevant if an application needs runtime image or instance selection, the new scheduling policy, or snapshots. Cloudflare says the usual code change is to replace extends Container with extends DurableObject and call this.ctx.container directly. That also means the application’s Durable Object takes on lifecycle-control responsibilities that a container base class may previously have handled.
