Cloudflare has introduced cf, an open-beta command-line interface designed to make its broader API easier for AI agents and developers to discover and use. It is intended to span Cloudflare services beyond Workers, while Wrangler moves into a gradual transition—not an immediate shutdown. Existing Worker projects can start migrating with cf migrate.
What is Cloudflare’s new cf CLI?
Cloudflare announced cf on September 28, 2026, as an open-beta CLI aimed at workflows across its API. The company says Wrangler exposed around 280 command paths, compared with more than 3,000 operations in the Cloudflare API. Its Forge generation pipeline uses API schemas to generate CLI commands, with the goal of making more of that surface available through one interface. These are Cloudflare’s reported figures, not an independent comparison.

The intended scope goes beyond deploying Workers: Cloudflare describes using the CLI to set up and deploy Workers, monitor them, apply Access protection, buy a domain, and work with WAF. The announcement does not establish that every API operation or existing Wrangler workflow already works identically in cf.

JSON output and task discovery
Cloudflare says JSON is the default output, formatted to remain readable to people while being condensed for agents. When an agent does not know which operation to use, cf cli search accepts a natural-language description of the task and returns matching CLI operations based on API descriptions and parameters. Cloudflare says the first --help invocation directs agents to this search command.

TypeScript configuration and Vite
The new configuration format is cloudflare.config.ts. Cloudflare’s stated rationale is that TypeScript and language-server support help agents interpret and edit project configuration. Vite is the default development setup for Workers in the announcement; this is a change to the described workflow, not evidence that every project can drop its existing build tooling.
What Cloudflare reports about agent use
Cloudflare says agents accounted for a quarter of Wrangler use in March 2026, up from single-digit percentages the previous year, and reached 48% in the week before the announcement. It also reports that agents used almost twice as many distinct commands per day and were almost four times as likely to use six or more commands. The post does not describe an independent measurement methodology, so treat these as company-reported usage figures.
How to start a project or deploy with cf
Cloudflare gives npm i -g cf as the global installation command for the open beta. For a new Worker project, cf init can set up the project; Cloudflare says cf init and cf deploy can install the Cloudflare Vite Plugin and create a configuration file. Static sites can be deployed with cf deploy without first creating a configuration file.
Cloudflare also says cf will continue delegating to Wrangler for JavaScript Workers that require esbuild and for Rust and Python Workers. That means the transition does not remove Wrangler from every build path at launch.
How to migrate an existing Worker from Wrangler
- Run
cf migratein an existing Worker project to begin migration. - If the project already uses Vite, Cloudflare says migration converts it to
cloudflare.config.ts. - If the project relies on Wrangler for esbuild,
cfcontinues to delegate builds to Wrangler rather than replacing that build path.
The announcement describes this migration support, but does not claim that every project configuration or deployment workflow migrates without adjustment.

Cloudflare plans to release a final major Wrangler version when the cf open beta ends. That version is intended to direct users and agents toward cf. After the beta ends, Cloudflare says it will provide Wrangler maintenance support for 18 months.

The announcement does not give a calendar date for the beta’s end. The 18-month period therefore runs from that future end date, not from the September 28, 2026 announcement. Wrangler is entering a planned transition, but the post does not announce an immediate shutdown or establish a date when all Wrangler use will stop.
