Atlassian says CVE-2026-21589 lets unauthenticated attackers access certain files inside the web application root of eight self-hosted Data Center products. An attacker must already know the exact target file name and path; the flaw does not provide directory listing or enumeration. Atlassian disclosed the vulnerability on October 5, 2026, rated it Critical at CVSS 4.0 9.3, and recommends installing the applicable fixed release or later. Read Atlassian’s security advisory.

Which Atlassian products are affected?

Atlassian says all versions before the listed fixed releases are affected. The products are self-hosted Data Center editions of Bitbucket, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, and Crowd, plus Crucible and Fisheye.

The issue is an arbitrary file access vulnerability within the web application root. It is not a claim that every file on the host can be read: the attacker needs prior knowledge of the exact file name and path, and the flaw does not let them list or enumerate directory contents. Atlassian assigns a CVSS 4.0 score of 9.3, describing the issue as Critical. That is Atlassian’s assessment; organizations should evaluate risk in their own environments.

Which version fixes CVE-2026-21589?

Upgrade each installation to a fixed version listed for that specific product, or a later release. Match both the product and release branch; a fixed version for one Atlassian product is not a substitute for another product’s fix. These versions are from Atlassian’s October 5, 2026 advisory.

What should Data Center administrators do?

Patch as soon as possible

Inventory each affected product and its installed version, then upgrade it to an applicable fixed release or later. For clustered deployments, follow the product’s upgrade process across the deployment rather than treating one updated node as proof that the instance is fully patched.

If patching must wait

Atlassian advises removing the instance from the internet if possible and restricting external network access, including when an internet-facing instance requires authentication. The advisory describes three configuration-based mitigation approaches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Apply a URL-filtering rule at the web application firewall or proxy.
  • Use Tomcat RewriteValve rules for Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, and Crowd.
  • Use a urlrewrite.xml rule for Bitbucket.

Follow the advisory’s exact product-specific procedure rather than adapting a summarized rule. Its instructions include backing up configuration, applying the change to each relevant cluster node or mirror, and restarting nodes. Temporary controls reduce exposure while patching is delayed; they are not a replacement for moving to a fixed release.

How can you investigate possible access?

Atlassian says it cannot determine whether an individual customer’s instance was affected and recommends involving the local security team. Its advisory suggests reviewing access logs for suspicious requests:

  • URL-decode request lines up to two times, then look for .. immediately adjacent to /, , or ::.
  • Alternatively, search raw log lines using the regular expression provided in the advisory.

These patterns are investigation clues, not proof of compromise. A match needs context and analysis; no match does not prove that exploitation did not occur. Preserve relevant logs and assess findings with your security team.

Does this affect Atlassian Cloud?

Atlassian says affected Cloud products have been patched, its investigation found no evidence of exploitation, and Cloud customers do not need to take action. That statement applies to Atlassian Cloud as described in the vendor’s advisory; it does not establish the status of self-hosted Data Center installations.
