Cloudflare Error 1005 means the website has blocked the Autonomous System Number (ASN) associated with your internet connection. It is a network-level restriction in the site’s Cloudflare configuration, not proof that your device is infected or that you personally did something wrong. Visitors generally need the website owner to review the block; site owners can investigate it in Cloudflare’s Security Events.
What does Error 1005 mean?
Cloudflare defines Error 1005 as “Access Denied: Autonomous System Number (ASN) banned.” It is one of Cloudflare’s 1xxx error pages, which appear in the response page rather than acting as conventional HTTP status codes. The error identifies a denied network ASN; it does not, by itself, establish why the site blocked that network or whether the restriction was intentional. Cloudflare’s Error 1005 documentation was last updated April 23, 2026.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number identifies a network operated by an organization. Internet service providers, mobile carriers, VPN providers, universities, companies, and cloud-hosting providers may operate or be associated with ASNs. A site can apply a rule to an ASN—for example, AS13335—instead of handling each address separately. Cloudflare’s IP Access Rules support IP addresses, ranges, ASNs, and countries; country rules are documented as Enterprise-only. See Cloudflare’s supported rule parameters.
One ASN can cover many addresses and unrelated users. A broad block can therefore deny legitimate visitors along with the traffic the site meant to restrict.

Why might you see Error 1005?
The site’s Cloudflare configuration has denied the ASN associated with the request, but the error alone does not reveal the site owner’s reason. Possible explanations include an anti-abuse measure after suspicious traffic, a rule aimed at scraping or automated activity, or a restriction that catches more people than intended.
- A VPN or proxy may route you through a provider whose ASN the site blocks.
- Your ISP or mobile carrier may use an affected network.
- A company, school, library, or public Wi-Fi network may share an ASN with traffic the site restricts.
- A cloud-hosted network may be blocked even when the visitor is a legitimate user or service.
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: only the site owner can check which rule matched. Error 1005 does not show that your device is compromised or that you personally violated a site policy.

What should you do as a visitor?
- Save the details from the error page. Record the requested URL, the Cloudflare Ray ID, and the displayed time and date with the time zone. Take a screenshot if possible.
- Contact the website, not Cloudflare. Use its published support channel and explain what you were trying to access. Include whether you were on home broadband, mobile data, a work or school network, or a VPN or proxy.
- Compare with a normal alternate connection if available. For example, check whether home Wi-Fi and mobile data behave differently. A difference can help the site owner investigate an ASN-specific block, but it does not prove which network rule caused it or guarantee access.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect only if appropriate. This may change the network ASN, but the replacement connection may also be blocked. Do not bypass workplace or school network policies.
- Avoid repeated retries. Refreshing aggressively is unlikely to remove an ASN rule and can trigger other controls. Cloudflare Error 1015, for instance, is associated with exceeding a site owner’s request limit. Cloudflare explains Error 1015 here.
Clearing cookies, reinstalling a browser, changing devices, or changing DNS providers does not normally change the ASN from which your connection reaches the site. Those steps are not a useful first response to an ASN-level denial.
Message you can send to site support
Include only information you are comfortable sharing. A public IP address may help the site owner investigate, but the Ray ID, timestamp, URL, and connection type are useful starting details.

How website owners can investigate and correct Error 1005
Cloudflare’s documented workflow starts with the visitor’s screenshot and the request details. Its guidance says to use Security Events and search by Ray ID or visitor IP; the event timestamp is in UTC, so account for that when searching. Follow Cloudflare’s Error 1005 troubleshooting guidance.
- Open the zone’s Security → Events. Search with the Ray ID or client IP address supplied by the visitor.
- Match the event time. Convert the time shown by the visitor to UTC before narrowing the event search.
- Identify the matched control. Determine whether an IP Access Rule or another security rule caused the denial. Removing one ASN rule may not help if a separate WAF, bot, rate-limit, country, or custom rule also blocks the request.
- Check the reason for the restriction. Review what traffic pattern prompted the block, whether it is still present, and whether the affected ASN includes shared residential, mobile, business, or cloud users.
- Choose the narrowest safe change. Depending on the evidence, retain the block, narrow it to a more specific address range or protected endpoint, adjust the rule, or use a challenge rather than a blanket denial. Cloudflare documents block, allow, and challenge actions for IP Access Rules. Compare the available actions.
- Retest from an affected network. Confirm the result using a representative connection and check for overlapping rules if access is still denied.
Before allowing an entire ASN, account for the security consequences: Cloudflare warns that an Allow IP Access Rule can bypass configured protections, including Browser Integrity Check, Under Attack mode, WAF protections, and rate-limiting rules. Keep any exception as narrow as the legitimate use case permits. See Cloudflare’s IP Access Rules overview.

Error 1005 compared with similar Cloudflare errors
| Error | Cloudflare-described condition |
|---|---|
| 1005 | ASN banned |
| 1006, 1007, 1008, 1106 | Visitor IP address banned |
| 1009 | Country or region banned |
| 1010 | Browser signature banned |
| 1015 | Rate limited |
| 1020 | Access denied by a Cloudflare firewall rule |
Use the exact error number shown on the page: Error 1005 is specifically associated with an ASN, not simply an individual IP address. Cloudflare’s 1xxx error index lists the separate conditions.
Is Error 1005 caused by Cloudflare, your ISP, or the site?
A Cloudflare-branded Error 1005 points to a denial in the protected site’s Cloudflare security configuration. The website owner controls that configuration. Cloudflare support cannot override a customer’s security settings for a visitor; the owner is the appropriate contact for review.

An ISP- or network-operator-level block is a different problem and may produce a different failure rather than this specific Cloudflare error. Cloudflare distinguishes owner-configured restrictions from potential ISP blocking in its troubleshooting guidance. Read about potential ISP blocking and Cloudflare WAF troubleshooting.
When a different network works—or nothing does
- Home Wi-Fi fails but mobile data works: the home connection’s ASN may be blocked, or the traffic may be routed through a network that is. Send the site owner details for both connections; do not assume your ISP alone caused it.
- A VPN fails but ordinary broadband works: the VPN network may be the one blocked. Changing VPN servers is not a reliable fix and can amount to evading a site restriction.
- Every connection shows Error 1005: the site may have a broad rule or more than one relevant restriction. The site owner needs to inspect its events and rules.
- You see a different error on another attempt: diagnose the new error by its code. IP bans, browser-signature rules, rate limits, and firewall rules are distinct controls.
Another CDN placed in front of Cloudflare can also complicate request handling and security accuracy; site owners using a multi-CDN chain should account for that setup when tracing a block. Cloudflare’s third-party CDN guidance discusses these considerations.
