The original Bing Chat experience was renamed Microsoft Copilot, and the current search-focused version is Copilot Search in Bing. Basic consumer Copilot access is free, while Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate licensed product for deeper app and workplace integration.
You can use it from Bing, copilot.com, Microsoft Edge, Windows, supported macOS devices, and Copilot or Bing mobile apps. It can summarize web sources, answer follow-up questions, draft text, create images and assist with visual searches, but its fluent answers still require source checking.
What happened to the original AI-powered Bing?
Microsoft introduced the new AI-enhanced Bing and Edge experience in early 2023. The launch added conversational answers alongside ordinary search results, followed by features such as Bing Image Creator and visual search. Microsoft’s March 2023 announcement describes that early expansion in detail at Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator announcement.
In November 2023, Microsoft folded Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise into the Microsoft Copilot brand. The rebrand was announced in Microsoft’s Copilot announcement, with commercial-data-protected Copilot becoming generally available from December 1, 2023, according to Microsoft’s Ignite 2023 Book of News.

On April 4, 2025, Microsoft introduced Copilot Search in Bing, describing it as a hybrid search page that combines conventional results with generated summaries, related topics and follow-up exploration. Microsoft said the feature was rolling out broadly, including on mobile, although the exact interface and availability can still vary by market, language, account and platform.
| Term | What it means now |
|---|---|
| New Bing | The 2023 AI-enhanced Bing launch. |

| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft’s broader consumer and productivity AI brand. |

What is Copilot Search in Bing?
Copilot Search presents a generated explanation together with links to the web material used to form it. You can ask a natural-language question, inspect cited pages, open related topics and continue with follow-up questions without restating the entire context. The underlying web remains available instead of being replaced by a single answer.
That makes it useful for an initial explanation, a comparison or a research plan. It does not make every sentence reliable: a citation may support only part of a summary, and several sources can be blended into a confident-sounding answer. Microsoft’s introduction is documented at Introducing Copilot Search in Bing.

Its getting-started documentation says macOS access requires macOS 14 or later and an Apple M1-or-newer Mac, with availability stated there for the United States, United Kingdom and Canada; iPhone and iPad access requires iOS or iPadOS 16 or later. App and regional requirements can change.

The basic consumer Copilot experience is available at no cost. A Microsoft account is not generally required for basic web use, but signing in adds account-linked features and may affect usage allowances. “Free” does not mean that every Copilot product or capability is included.
| Experience | Access and boundaries |
|---|---|
| Basic consumer Copilot | Free web-grounded chat, writing help, summaries, image creation and other consumer features, subject to service and usage conditions. |
| Signed-in consumer Copilot | Free personal-account access with chat history, longer conversations, longer voice use and more image creation than anonymous use, where offered. |
| Copilot in Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium | Subscription-dependent Copilot features inside eligible Microsoft 365 applications. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot for work | Organization licensing, permissions and administrator configuration are required for work-data grounding and enterprise controls. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Search | Separate work search for eligible licensed users; it is not the same as consumer Copilot Search in Bing. |
Microsoft distinguishes consumer and Microsoft 365 products in its Copilot guidance for organizations. Licensed users can receive priority access to some Microsoft 365 Copilot capabilities, while unlicensed users receive standard access; capacity and availability remain service-dependent, as explained in Microsoft’s standard versus priority access documentation.

Where AI search can fail
Accuracy and citation limits
Copilot can produce factual mistakes, outdated details, fabricated specifics or incomplete summaries. “Web-grounded” means that web search informed the response; it is not a guarantee of real-time accuracy. Open cited pages and verify that they actually support the relevant sentence. For medical, legal, financial, political, safety or security decisions, consult authoritative primary sources and qualified professionals instead of relying on the generated answer.
Ambiguous or changing questions
Include the relevant country, date, edition, model number or software version. Ask Copilot to list the publication date of each source, use official sources only, identify recent changes and state what remains uncertain. If the answer still lacks useful evidence, search directly for the responsible organization or document.
Capacity and availability
The interface may differ during staged rollouts, service-capacity changes or account-specific limits. A feature can be present in one country, language, app or account mode and absent in another.

Consumer Copilot versus Microsoft 365 Copilot
Free consumer Copilot is primarily a public-web and personal-assistance service. It does not automatically grant access to files in OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, Teams or other organizational systems.
Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate licensed experience designed to work with Microsoft 365 applications and, when permissions and configuration allow, organizational content. A work or school account may show different features from a personal account. Microsoft explains license differences in its Copilot license guide.
Administrators can control web search in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and Agents. If an administrator disables it, responses will not benefit from current public-web information. The relevant controls are described in Microsoft’s web-search documentation. Missing work files can also result from the wrong tenant, absent licensing, insufficient permissions, an unindexed source, unavailable connectors or using personal mode.

Privacy and data boundaries
- A signed-in consumer account can retain chat history and personalize the experience according to Microsoft’s settings and policies.
- Consumer Copilot should not be treated as a secure place for confidential company, client, patient or unreleased product information.
- Work Copilot operates within tenant permissions, licensing, retention rules and administrator controls; it is not equivalent to anonymous public-web search.
- Employers should deliberately configure access, web search, retention and connected data sources before deployment.
When ordinary Bing is the better tool
Choose conventional results when you need to audit information or reach a precise destination:
- An official government form, regulator notice, court document or manufacturer manual.
- A current price, stock status, opening time or local-business listing.
- An exact technical command, product specification or version-specific instruction.
- Several independent viewpoints or the complete original article rather than a summary.
- Verification of a medical, legal, financial, political or emergency claim.
Traditional Bing gives you ranked links, snippets, images, videos, maps, shopping listings and other structured results. Copilot Search is generally more convenient for a first-pass explanation; ordinary results give you more control over which source you read and compare.
How it differs from other assistants
| Service | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search | Link-first navigation, local search and structured Google results. | Use it when you prefer a conventional results page; no unsupported performance ranking is implied. |
| ChatGPT | Standalone conversational writing, reasoning, coding and analysis. | Often preferable when the workflow is centered on an AI assistant rather than Bing’s search interface; features change by plan and date. |
| Perplexity | Source-oriented conversational research. | Its plans, models and availability change, so quantitative comparisons require current testing. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and governed organizational data. | It is a separate productivity and work-data product, not simply a paid version of Bing. |
If the Copilot option is missing
- Try copilot.com and Bing in a current browser.
- Sign in with the account type the feature requires; do not confuse a work account with a personal one.
- Update Bing, Edge or the Copilot app.
- Check country, language and staged-rollout differences.
- Ask a work-account administrator whether licensing or policy has restricted Copilot or web search.
- Use ordinary Bing results when the AI entry point is unavailable.
The Bottom Line
Copilot Search is the modern form of Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing: free to try, useful for fast synthesis and follow-up exploration, and available across Bing, Copilot, Edge and supported apps. Treat it as a research starting point—not an authority. For anything consequential or exact, open the cited source and verify the original information.
