It can provide prerequisites such as Visual C++, DirectX 9, .NET, OpenAL, XNA, and PhysX. It is not a game or a performance booster; for most players, the right move is to leave it installed.
What Steamworks Common Redistributables does
In plain terms, it is a shared set of prerequisites that Steam games can use instead of each game maintaining its own separate copy. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes it as a way for developers to specify redistributables their applications need, with Steam managing the shared content and applicable updates.
“Steamworks” here refers to Valve’s developer and distribution system; “common” means the content can serve multiple Steam applications; and “redistributables” are runtime components that developers can provide so software has libraries or frameworks it expects. It is not the Steamworks SDK, a multiplayer service, a graphics driver, or a general-purpose Windows update.
Valve’s documentation lists Microsoft Visual C++, .NET, DirectX 9, OpenAL, XNA, and PhysX among the available categories. That list is not a promise that every PC receives every component: a developer selects what its game or application needs, and Valve maintains the available list in Steamworks App Admin. On 64-bit Windows, a game may need both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of a runtime.

Why it appears in your Steam Library
Steam exposes the package as a free application/tool, identified as App ID 228980. SteamDB’s configuration entry identifies its shared install directory and tool-style launch behavior. That Steam Library presentation does not make it a conventional game; it is how Steam presents a managed shared-content package. Its visibility and available Library options can vary with Steam client version, operating system, and settings.
The name appeared in Steam’s public client update notes on April 17, 2019, when Valve said updates to shared installer content would be listed under “Steamworks Common Redistributables” (Steam Client Update).
Where Steam stores it
On Windows, the shared content is typically found under the Steam Library folder containing it:

Your Steam Library may be on a different drive or in a custom location, so these are folder names, not a guaranteed full path. SteamDB’s App 228980 configuration records the shared install directory. The folder is primarily stored content and installer material, not an always-running service. Steam or a game may access it while checking or installing prerequisites, and Steam may validate, update, or reacquire content.
Should you delete or uninstall it?
Normally, no: leave it installed. Removing the package does not remove the underlying requirements from games that depend on them. Some installers place runtime components in Windows system locations, while Steam’s shared folder may contain installers, scripts, or package-specific files. Deleting the folder therefore does not reliably uninstall Visual C++ or DirectX from Windows.

If you remove Steam’s shared files, Steam may download them again when a game needs them; users have reported that behavior in Steam Community discussions. A missing runtime can also cause a game to fail at launch or run its prerequisite setup again. The exact outcome depends on which game and files are involved; Valve’s public documentation does not guarantee a particular redownload sequence.
If storage is the concern, check the folder’s actual size and which Library drive contains it. Contents vary as dependencies and package depots change; SteamDB lists separate depots for App 228980, not one immutable package size. Consider uninstalling games you no longer use or relocating a Steam Library rather than manually pruning shared runtimes.

A download is not automatically a fault. A newly installed game may request a dependency that was not present before, and Steam may validate or update shared files. Repeated or stuck activity is more concerning when a prerequisite installation is interrupted or Steam cannot write to its Library.

- A newly installed game needs a runtime not previously installed.
- A first-launch prerequisite installer did not finish.
- Shared files were deleted, partially removed, or corrupted.
- A download, storage, permissions, or disk-write problem interrupted installation.
- A game moved between Steam Library folders, or Steam’s local package state no longer matches files on disk.
- A title needs a different runtime version or architecture than another installed game.
How to troubleshoot a download or launch problem
If the package keeps appearing in Downloads
- Let pending Steam downloads finish and confirm Steam is online rather than in Offline Mode.
- Check free space on the drive containing the relevant Steam Library.
- Restart Steam completely, then check whether the package completes its download.
- Note the Library folder where the package is installed and look for Steam download or disk-write errors.
- Verify the affected game’s files. In current clients, open the game’s Properties and look under Installed Files for the verification option; labels can change between client versions.
- If several unrelated games fail or shared content still will not install, investigate Library permissions, disk health, and the Steam client installation state. Back up important saves and configuration data before moving a Library or attempting a broader repair.
If one game will not launch
- Restart Steam and wait for its pending downloads to finish.
- Launch the affected game again so its prerequisite check can run.
- Verify the game’s installed files using its Steam Properties.
- If an error names a particular runtime, repair or install that dependency only from its official vendor or the game publisher.
- Restart Windows after a failed runtime installation, then try the game again.
A game-specific launcher, DRM check, or damaged game file can fail independently of Steamworks Common Redistributables. If the error does not name a missing prerequisite, do not assume the shared package is the cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Visual C++ runtimes: architecture and older versions matter
Steamworks Common Redistributables is not one universal Visual C++ package. Microsoft explains that the runtime architecture must match the application: a 32-bit game can need the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft’s current v14 runtime supports applications built with Visual Studio 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2026 toolchains, while older generations such as Visual C++ 2013 and earlier remain separate and may need to coexist (Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads).
Installing the newest Visual C++ package therefore does not necessarily satisfy an older game. Avoid installing every redistributable just in case; use the package named by the game’s error or its publisher’s support instructions. Microsoft recommends obtaining Visual C++ redistributables from Microsoft-hosted sources and provides troubleshooting advice for installer failures, including checking logs and restarting to release locked files (Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting guide).

How it differs from similarly named Steam technology
| Item | What it is | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Steamworks Common Redistributables | Steam-managed shared runtime prerequisites for applications that declare a need for them. | Steam users and developers. |
| Steamworks SDK | Developer tools and APIs for integrating Steam features into software. | Game and application developers. |
| Steamworks.NET | A third-party .NET wrapper for integrating with the Steamworks API; its documentation discusses files such as Steamworks.NET.dll and steam_api.dll. |
Developers using .NET or Unity; see Steamworks.NET installation documentation. |
| Steam Runtime | A Linux runtime environment for Steam software. | Linux users and developers. |
| Proton | A compatibility layer used to run Windows games on Linux. | Steam Deck and Linux users. |
A game’s _CommonRedist folder |

These names overlap, but they refer to different systems. In particular, the Steam Library package is not the Steamworks SDK or Steamworks.NET.
What Steam Deck and Linux users should know
Valve’s common-redistributables documentation describes a Windows-oriented workflow, including Windows registry locations for developer testing. It should not be read as evidence that Linux or Steam Deck installs dependencies in exactly the same way. Windows games on Linux may rely on Proton, compatibility prefixes, and related runtime layers; a Windows fix such as manually running a redistributable .exe may not be the right Linux-native repair. Use Steam’s game-specific compatibility troubleshooting rather than assuming Windows instructions apply unchanged.
For Steamworks developers: configure and test dependencies
Valve documents this configuration path in Steamworks App Admin:
- Open the application in Steamworks App Admin.
- Open the Installation tab and select Redistributables.
- Select the common redistributables required by the application, then publish the changes.
For uncommon or custom dependencies, Valve says developers can use an install script. Valve recommends testing on a clean operating-system image or virtual machine. Its Windows testing instructions identify installed common redistributables under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREValveSteamAppsCommonRedist on 32-bit Windows and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeValveSteamAppsCommonRedist on 64-bit Windows. Those registry instructions are for developer testing, not a consumer repair method; do not edit these keys casually.

How to treat an antivirus warning
A file is not trustworthy solely because its name contains “redistributable.” Check whether it is in the expected Steam Library location and whether its signature and source are legitimate. Do not manually run a suspicious file. Let Steam reacquire package content through its client, scan the system with a reputable security tool, and contact Steam Support or the security vendor if you believe a legitimate file was flagged incorrectly.
