Cloud storage keeps camera footage with a service provider; local storage saves it on an on-site device such as a microSD card or network video recorder (NVR). Cloud can make recorded clips easier to retrieve remotely and may preserve them if a camera is stolen. Local storage can avoid some subscription costs and keep the recorder physically under your control. Neither option is automatically safer, more private, or cheaper: the camera, account security, network, retention settings, provider practices, and maintenance all matter.
How cloud and local camera storage work
Cloud recording
A camera sends recordings to storage operated by a vendor or its service provider. You typically retrieve footage through an account or app, so access depends on the service and your account being available. Before choosing it, find out where footage is stored, how long it remains available, who can access it, how it is protected, and how deletion works. CISA’s Operationalizing the Vendor SCRM Template for SMBs 2025 highlights these questions for organizations using cloud-hosted surveillance storage.

Local recording
A camera may save footage to a supported microSD card, or several cameras may record to an NVR or another compatible on-site recorder. The owner controls physical access to that equipment, but also takes responsibility for its capacity, retention, physical protection, and upkeep. Local footage can be lost if storage is stolen, damaged, full, or misconfigured.
Cloud vs. local storage: the practical differences
| Decision | Cloud recording | Local recording |
|---|---|---|
| Where footage is kept | On provider-managed infrastructure. Check the storage location, retention, access, deletion process, and provider controls. | On a compatible card, NVR, or other on-site device. You control physical access and maintenance. |
| Remote access and outages | Can make saved footage available remotely, but service and account availability matter. | Recording can be stored on local equipment. Remote viewing or retrieval may require additional configuration; check what continues to work if internet access fails. |
| Resilience to theft or damage | A remotely stored copy may remain available if the camera or its local card is stolen or damaged, subject to the service and account remaining accessible. | The recorder or card is on-site and may be lost or damaged with the camera or property. Physical protection or a separate backup may be needed. |
| Costs and upkeep | May require a recurring plan. Plan features and fees vary; you still need to secure the account, camera, app, and network. | May require compatible storage or an NVR. It can avoid some cloud plan costs, but equipment, capacity, and maintenance still cost time or money. |
| Recording options and scale | Clip uploads, continuous recording, and event-triggered recording depend on the plan and camera. | A card may suit an individual camera; an NVR may suit a multi-camera setup. Compatibility and recording modes depend on the models. |
| Security responsibilities | Protect the camera and network as well as the vendor account; review provider practices and account controls. | Protect the camera, recorder, physical location, and network, including any remote-access path; keep firmware current. |
Is cloud or local storage better for security cameras?
Choose based on the risks and work you want to manage, not on the storage label alone. Cloud may fit someone who values remote access to saved footage and wants a copy away from the camera. Local storage may fit someone who wants the recorder on-site and is prepared to manage capacity, physical security, and maintenance. A hybrid option may be available on some systems, but support varies by model and service.

- Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
- Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
Compare the complete system over the period you expect to use it: recurring plan fees, compatible equipment, retention, recording mode, remote access, behavior during an outage, resilience to theft, privacy controls, and maintenance. The available evidence does not establish a universal cost or security winner.
Are security cameras with local storage safer?
Not necessarily. Keeping recordings on-site limits one provider relationship, but it does not protect footage from a stolen recorder, a misconfigured device, or someone accessing a camera over a poorly secured account or network. Cloud storage adds a provider and account relationship, so provider practices and account protection become part of the security picture.

The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance, How To Secure Your Home Security Cameras, recommends steps such as using strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication when available, installing software updates, using encryption where offered, and thinking carefully before enabling remote viewing. The FTC’s August 30, 2024 press release about Verkada described allegations that inadequate security practices exposed sensitive video and customer data; the complaint alleged that a March 2021 breach gave a hacker access to over 150,000 live customer cameras. That figure refers to allegations in a particular case, not a general measure of camera risk. See the FTC release.

Can a security camera record without a subscription?
Sometimes. Subscription requirements and available recording methods depend on the camera and its region. Reolink, for example, describes microSD and FTP as local or alternative recording paths and says cloud availability varies by model and region. Its guidance is product-specific, not a guarantee for other brands. Check the exact camera’s manual and current support information before buying storage or assuming a feature is supported: Reolink camera subscription and recording information.

Can footage be saved to a microSD card or NVR?
Use a microSD card only if the camera supports it, and verify the supported capacity, format, and speed in the camera’s documentation. For several cameras or continuous recording, an NVR may be suitable if each camera and the recorder are compatible. A product category alone does not establish how many days of footage you will retain; that depends on supported capacity, recording settings, camera count, and the way the system stores video.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens to camera footage if the internet goes out?
It depends on the camera and recording setup. A camera with compatible local storage may continue recording on-site, but do not assume that every model records offline or that remote access will remain available. Cloud uploads and remote retrieval can be affected by connectivity or service availability. Check the manual for offline recording behavior, what happens to footage captured during an outage, and whether it uploads later.

How long do security cameras keep recordings?
There is no universal retention period. For cloud systems, check the plan’s retention rules and what happens to saved footage if the plan ends. For local systems, retention depends on storage capacity and recording settings; once storage fills, the camera or recorder may overwrite older footage or behave differently, depending on its configuration. Confirm the behavior for the exact model rather than relying on a general estimate.
Questions to verify before choosing a system
- Where is cloud footage physically stored, who can access it, and how long is it retained?
- Can you delete recordings, and what happens to them when a plan ends or the service is unavailable?
- Does the product encrypt footage in transit and at rest, and does it offer two-factor authentication and separate user permissions?
- Can you disable remote viewing, and who is allowed to watch or administer the camera?
- What recording modes, storage capacities, and offline behaviors does the exact camera support?
- How will you protect local equipment from theft, damage, full storage, and misconfiguration?
- Will the camera and recorder continue receiving firmware updates?
These are product and service details to verify, not capabilities that every camera or provider offers. CISA’s guidance on surveillance and vendor supply-chain risk emphasizes asking where information is stored, how long it is kept, and who can access it. As CISA puts it, cloud users “accept the notion that footage of their facility and people will be stored somewhere in a public cloud, trusting the vendor’s security measures to ensure proper confidentiality.”
