Cloud-Native Security: Protect Every Layer from Code to Runtime

Cloud-native security is not a single Kubernetes setting or scanner. It spans the application lifecycle—from development and artifact distribution through deployment—and the running environment, including API access, compute, networking, storage, and cloud identity. The Linux Foundation’s Cloud Native Security Exposed: A Layered Approach To Cloud Security webinar, recorded December 15, 2020, introduced this layered framing; current Kubernetes documentation provides practical control areas for applying it.

What the layered approach means

The Linux Foundation webinar organized cloud-native security along two dimensions: the application lifecycle (develop, distribute, deploy) and environment security (runtime access and compute). Kubernetes documentation offers a useful bridge between them: it covers develop, distribute, deploy, and runtime, with runtime including access, compute, and storage. The point is not to force every system into one diagram; it is to find and protect the trust boundaries and control points that matter in a specific architecture.

The webinar was sponsored by Palo Alto Networks and featured Vinay Venkataraghavan, Technical Director, Office of the CTO. Its date matters: it is a 2020 overview, not a current product evaluation or version-specific Kubernetes runbook. For current implementation details, consult the relevant Kubernetes documentation and confirm guidance against the cluster version, provider, and integrations in use.

Develop: reduce risk before code becomes a workload

Start with the application’s threat model and identify where it trusts users, services, data, and infrastructure. Protect development environments, use security-aware code review, and establish how design changes will be assessed. Depending on the system and its risk, teams may also use automation such as fuzzing or security chaos engineering.

  • Identify trust boundaries and the assets a compromise could expose.
  • Review code and design changes for security implications, not just functionality.
  • Protect developer credentials and build inputs so an attacker cannot quietly alter the path from source to artifact.

Distribute: protect images, dependencies, and other artifacts

Images and dependencies are supply-chain inputs. Scan artifacts for known vulnerabilities, keep dependencies current in response to security announcements, restrict registry access, and use encryption and trust mechanisms when artifacts are transferred. These measures reduce particular risks; a scan or trusted registry does not establish that an artifact is entirely safe.

Decide how to handle findings before they arrive: who evaluates them, what blocks release, and how exceptions are approved and revisited. The appropriate policy depends on the application’s threat model and operational constraints.

Deploy: control what enters the cluster

Deployment controls should answer three questions: who can deploy, what may be deployed, and where it may run. Kubernetes namespaces can help separate workloads, while admission and policy mechanisms can enforce deployment requirements. Check how those controls behave with the cluster’s Kubernetes version and chosen integrations rather than assuming a policy is enforced merely because it has been configured somewhere.

Keep deployment permissions scoped to the tasks a user or automation actually performs. Review the complete permission path: indirect privileges can matter as much as a permission to create a pod directly.

Runtime access: secure the Kubernetes API and identities

The Kubernetes API is a central control point: as Kubernetes documentation puts it, “The Kubernetes API is what makes your cluster work.” Authenticate clients, authorize requests with appropriately scoped role-based access control (RBAC), and protect TLS keys and traffic. Workloads may also use service-account identities, which should be scoped to the actions they need.

FortiGate-60F Network Security Appliance Plus 1 Year FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection (UTP) and FortiCare Premium (FG-60F-BDL-950-12)
  • HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
  • UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
  • OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
  • RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

Review permissions for indirect escalation paths, not just obvious high-risk verbs. A role that appears limited may enable a user to create or modify resources that run with more powerful identities or access sensitive data. Audit role bindings and service-account permissions with the cluster’s actual workload and administrative model in mind.

Runtime compute and network: limit privilege and reachability

Use Kubernetes Pod Security Standards and security contexts to avoid granting workloads unnecessary privileges. Limit communication between pods and between pods and external destinations using network policies or, where appropriate, a service mesh. The behavior of network policies depends on the selected networking implementation, so verify that the deployed plugin supports and enforces the policies you rely on.

Do not treat policy objects as proof of isolation. Validate the enforcement point and the allowed traffic paths for the actual cluster, including exceptions required by application dependencies.

Protect secrets and cluster data

Restrict access to secrets and protect etcd data and backups. Evaluate encryption at rest for the relevant data stores, and control who can read, export, or restore sensitive information. A backup is part of the security boundary because it may contain the same sensitive data as the live system.

Constrain cloud identity and metadata access

A workload may be able to reach a cloud metadata API and obtain credentials or provisioning information. Limit the permissions assigned to the underlying instance or workload identity, and restrict metadata access where the platform allows it. Assess this path alongside Kubernetes RBAC: cloud permissions and cluster permissions are separate layers, and a workload’s effective reach may depend on both.

Log activity and scrutinize integrations

Enable Kubernetes audit logging and retain logs securely so they remain useful for investigation. Review third-party integrations as privileged components: an extension with cluster-wide access to secrets or other resources can change the cluster’s security profile. Understand what data and permissions an integration requires, who can administer it, and how its access is monitored.

How to adapt the layers to your cluster

There is no universal layer diagram that settles every implementation. The right controls depend on the architecture and threat model, the cloud provider, the network plugin, the Kubernetes version, and the integrations in use. Treat the lifecycle as a coverage check: identify where each control acts and what it can actually enforce.

  • Control coverage: Which lifecycle phase or runtime surface does the control protect?
  • Enforcement point: Does it act during development, artifact distribution, admission and deployment, API access, networking, or runtime?
  • Compatibility and scope: Which Kubernetes versions, providers, identity systems, and network plugins does it support?
  • Privilege and data access: What cluster permissions, secrets, metadata, logs, or workload data does it need?
  • Operational evidence: How are policies maintained, exceptions handled, alerts reviewed, and enforcement validated?

Use those questions to assess controls against the system you operate, not to infer that one tool covers every layer. Kubernetes guidance evolves, so verify release-specific details in the official documentation before changing a production cluster.
