Can a Foldable Phone Replace a Tablet for Everyday Tasks?

Foldable phones can cover phone use and some larger-screen tasks in one device, but tablets still suit people who need a broader work surface or stylus and keyboard workflows.

Foldable phones can replace a tablet for some people and lighter tasks, but they are not making dedicated tablets obsolete across the board. A book-style foldable gives you a conventional phone-sized device when closed and a larger screen when opened; a tablet still offers a bigger work surface and support for dedicated stylus and keyboard workflows.

What a foldable phone can replace

A foldable phone is a practical tablet substitute when your main goal is carrying one device that can handle calls and everyday phone use, then open for a larger view of messages, documents, web pages, or multiple apps. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 with an 8.0-inch unfolded main display and a 6.5-inch cover display on its Canada comparison page. Samsung describes the wider main screen as supporting multitasking, but that is a product feature description, not an independent finding about productivity. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 specifications

Samsung support documentation also describes using some apps on the front and main screens, and partially folded app use on certain supported models. These behaviors depend on the model and software, so check support for the specific device rather than assuming every foldable handles apps the same way. This convergence can make a separate tablet unnecessary if you mostly want a larger screen for occasional reading, browsing, viewing content, or light multitasking. Whether it works well for you depends on how much space your apps need and how you use them.

Where a dedicated tablet still has an advantage

A tablet has a larger screen to work on than a phone-sized device, even when the phone unfolds. For one current example, Apple lists an 11-inch iPad (A16) with Apple Pencil support and the Magic Keyboard Folio, which includes a keyboard and trackpad. Those accessories support workflows such as annotation, drawing, and keyboard-based work. Apple’s 11-inch iPad (A16) product page

The screen-size figures are diagonals: the Fold7’s 8.0-inch main display and the iPad’s 11-inch display. Diagonal measurements alone do not establish usable work area, since screen proportions and app layouts also matter. The figures do show that the opened Fold7 screen is smaller by diagonal measurement than this iPad example.

What matters to you Foldable phone Dedicated tablet
Carrying one device and making calls Use it as a phone when closed and open it for a larger view. A separate phone is still needed for phone use.
Screen space for longer work The Fold7 example has an 8.0-inch unfolded main display (Samsung Canada). The iPad (A16) example has an 11-inch display (Apple); diagonal measurements do not directly state usable work area.
App multitasking Samsung describes multitasking on the Fold7; specific behaviors vary by model and software. Apple describes window resizing, placement, tiling, and Stage Manager in iPadOS 26; availability varies by iPad model.
Stylus or keyboard-and-trackpad work Support depends on the particular foldable and accessories; the cited sources do not establish a like-for-like accessory comparison. Apple lists Apple Pencil support and Magic Keyboard Folio, which includes a keyboard and trackpad, for the cited iPad.

Software matters as much as screen size

Multitasking is not determined by display dimensions alone. Apple’s iPadOS 26 announcement describes resizable windows, window placement, tiling, and Stage Manager. Which functions are available depends on the iPad model; do not assume that every iPad supports the same multitasking or external-display capabilities. Apple’s iPadOS 26 announcement

Samsung also describes multitasking on the Fold7, and its support guidance documents some screen and partially folded app behaviors for supported devices. The relevant comparison is not simply whether both can show more than one app, but whether your apps and preferred arrangement work well on the device you plan to use.

How to decide whether you still need a tablet

  1. List the jobs you actually do. Separate phone tasks and occasional larger-screen use from sustained writing, annotation, drawing, or multi-window work.
  2. Try your key apps on a foldable-sized screen. Check whether their controls, documents, and layouts remain comfortable when opened, and whether the app-switching or multitasking features you need are supported on that model.
  3. Check your input needs. If you rely on a stylus, keyboard, or trackpad, verify compatibility for the exact device and accessories rather than assuming the options are interchangeable.
  4. Choose one device or two deliberately. A foldable suits someone who values one converged device; a tablet makes more sense when a larger workspace or tablet-oriented input is central to the routine.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say

The cited manufacturer pages document product specifications and software features; they do not provide an independent head-to-head test, a lifecycle durability comparison, or market data showing that foldables are displacing tablets in aggregate. They support a task-based decision, not a claim that tablets are becoming obsolete. Specifications and availability can vary by region, model, and software, so check current local product and support listings before buying.
