How to compare logging costs for a gaming startup
Cloud logs can help teams investigate issues across game clients, APIs, matchmaking services and delivery infrastructure. Those systems do not make “gaming delivery” a distinct logging product category; the practical question is whether a service’s data model, search window and region fit the app’s operational needs.

Before comparing dollar rates, define the workload you intend to send. A fair estimate needs monthly ingest, typical event size, retained days, query volume, and—where applicable—users or hosts. Also decide whether you are pricing a dedicated logs product, a broader observability suite or app-error monitoring.

What the pricing models mean in practice
Grafana Cloud Logs: account for more than ingest
Grafana’s published model separates processed, written, retained and queried data. The free tier and 50 GB written-volume allowance therefore do not mean every operation is unlimited: retention has a minimum window, and sufficiently high query volume may be billable. Pro starts at $19/month plus usage, so the base price is not a total-cost estimate.
New Relic: ingest tiers plus a regional storage charge
New Relic gives a clear free-ingest figure and per-GB options, but EU storage adds a separate per-GB-per-month charge. Include the storage add-on in an EU estimate rather than comparing only the ingest rate with another provider’s headline figure.

Better Stack: separate ingestion, retention and boosted scans
Better Stack publishes distinct rates for ingestion, retained data and query boost, while standard querying is included in the listed terms. A workload with long retention or heavy boosted scans can therefore cost more than an ingest-only calculation suggests.
Sentry Logs: check whether the plan permits overage
The listed 5 GB volume is plan-included, but the $0.50/GB additional-use rate applies only where a plan allows a pay-as-you-go budget. Check that eligibility before assuming additional volume can be purchased on the same terms. Its app-error-monitoring context may suit an existing Sentry workflow, while infrastructure logging requirements should be assessed separately.

Datadog: retention policy and commitment matter
Datadog’s indexed-event billing is tied to the selected retention policy and a monthly commitment. Without the account site, configuration and retention choice, the per-million billing description is not enough to calculate or rank a monthly bill.
How to build an apples-to-apples estimate
- Write down monthly volume: Estimate the GB of logs generated in a typical month, distinguishing what is sent from what is retained if your architecture or provider treats them separately.
- Set a retention target: Choose the number of days your team needs to search. Compare it with each service’s included window and any separately priced retention.
- Estimate search activity: Describe how often the team queries logs and, where relevant, the expected volume scanned. A high ingest allowance alone does not settle query costs.
- Choose the required geography: Specify EU or US needs, then confirm the service’s selectable location, the scope of data covered and backup location. Do not infer a location for an account from incomplete regional evidence.
- Check plan and budget eligibility: Verify whether overages are allowed, whether a commitment applies, and which budget controls exist on the plan you would actually use.
- Price only the products in scope: Include associated observability products, users or hosts only where your chosen setup meters them. Compare the resulting configuration, not isolated rates.
Which option should a startup shortlist?
Use the published terms to narrow the shortlist, not to declare a universal winner. Grafana Cloud and New Relic both advertise free usage, but Grafana’s logs model spans multiple usage dimensions while New Relic publishes ingest tiers and a separate EU storage charge. Better Stack makes ingestion, retention and boosted-query rates explicit. Sentry documents EU residency and region pricing, with plan-dependent overage eligibility. Datadog’s indexed-event commitment and retention-linked rates require a configuration-specific estimate.

Regional evidence is strongest in these cited materials for New Relic (US and EU), Better Stack (Virginia, Oregon and Germany among listed clusters), and Sentry (Frankfurt, EU backups, same US/EU pricing). The cited sources do not establish enough detail to make a comparable EU/US residency claim for Grafana Cloud Logs or every Datadog configuration.
