The camera captures and sends video; the service receives streams, manages devices, and may provide remote viewing, event notifications, and recording storage. Those service features depend on the provider and plan, and not every camera works with every cloud platform.
What is a cloud camera?
“Cloud camera” describes a camera used with a cloud video management or storage service, not a special kind of lens or a guarantee that the camera itself stores video online. The physical camera captures video and connects to a network. A cloud video management system (VMS) or video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) client receives the stream and provides whichever management, viewing, notification, or storage features its service supports.

The basic path is: camera lens and onboard electronics → network connection → cloud VMS/VSaaS client and storage → an authorized app or web client. The camera and service are separate parts of the system, so confirm that the exact camera is supported by the service you intend to use. Some integrations are standards-based; others use a manufacturer’s own connection.
How does a cloud camera connect to its service?
ONVIF Profile V describes an IP camera, encoder, or streaming application making a secure outbound connection to a conformant cloud client. ONVIF says this arrangement typically avoids configuring port forwarding or a VPN to reach a device behind a local firewall. Once connected, the client can configure the device, and the device can send live video and audio where supported, event notifications, and encrypted recordings. Authorized users can access live streams through supported clients. ONVIF’s Profile V overview describes these capabilities.

This is guidance for the standard, not a promise that every commercial cloud camera works this way. ONVIF’s Profile V FAQ identifies Profile V as a Release Candidate and says products can be certified as conformant only after the profile is finalized and conformance testing is available. Do not treat a product as Profile V certified on the basis of the draft. Existing cameras may instead connect through proprietary manufacturer systems.
Do cloud cameras need a local recorder?
No. A service may store recordings in the cloud, so a separate local recorder is not inherently required. Whether cloud recording is available, included, or subject to a subscription depends on the service and its terms. For example, TP-Link’s UK listing for the Tapo TC47 describes Tapo Care as an optional cloud-storage subscription.

Can a cloud camera also record to an SD card?
Some models support both local card recording and a cloud service. The TC47 listing names a microSD card slot as well as optional Tapo Care cloud storage, illustrating that the choices can coexist. That is a model-specific example, not a feature to assume across all cloud cameras. Check the exact model’s supported card capacity, recording options, and cloud-service terms before choosing a setup.

Does a cloud camera need Ethernet or Wi-Fi?
That depends on the camera. A cloud camera needs a network connection to communicate with its service, but the available connection method is model-specific. The TC47 manufacturer listing describes Ethernet; it does not establish that Ethernet—or Power over Ethernet (PoE)—is required for cloud cameras generally, nor does Ethernet support by itself prove PoE support. Check the selected model’s manual or datasheet for networking, power, mounting, and indoor or outdoor requirements.

Are ONVIF cameras compatible with cloud services?
Compatibility is not automatic. Check whether the cloud service explicitly supports the exact camera and whether the connection uses ONVIF or a vendor-specific integration. Profile V’s intended scope includes secure streaming, event notifications, device configuration, and encrypted video or audio recording to cloud storage; its security add-on addresses authorization and encryption. But the profile’s Release Candidate status means it should not be used to claim that a device is certified, and ONVIF support does not guarantee interoperability with every proprietary cloud platform.
Nor is standards conformance a complete security or legal-compliance guarantee. ONVIF says regulatory compliance is outside its scope. ONVIF’s conformance information should be considered separately from applicable legal obligations and the provider’s security practices.

What to check before choosing or installing one
- Cloud compatibility: Confirm that the intended VMS/VSaaS supports the exact camera, and identify whether the integration is standards-based or proprietary.
- Network connection: Check whether that model supports Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both, and whether the installation location can provide the required connection.
- Recording options: Verify whether recordings can go to the cloud, a microSD card, or both. Check card capacity limits and subscription terms rather than assuming storage is included.
- Access and security: Review how users are authorized and how video is transmitted and stored. A standards claim does not by itself settle broader security or regulatory questions.
- Physical installation: Use the model’s manual or datasheet to verify power, mounting, indoor/outdoor rating, and network reach. Do not infer these specifications from a different camera or from the term “cloud camera.”
