Dedicated cloud backup generally offers stronger recovery after a computer fails, files are deleted, or data is corrupted—especially when it keeps historical versions and provides a practical restore process. Cloud storage is better suited to access, syncing, and sharing; its recycle bins and version history can help, but syncing may also spread deletions or encrypted changes.
Cloud backup vs. cloud storage: what is the difference?
Cloud storage keeps files available online so you can access them from different devices and share them with others. Many storage services synchronize changes between the cloud and connected devices. That is convenient for a working set of documents, photos, and other files, but synchronization is not automatically an independent backup: a deletion or unwanted change may sync too.

Cloud backup is designed to preserve copies that can be restored after a loss event. Depending on the product and settings, it may cover more of a computer than the folders you chose to sync and retain earlier file versions. The important question is not whether a service calls itself “cloud” storage or backup, but what it copies, how long it retains recoverable versions, and how you can restore them.

Which protects files better in common situations?
| Need or risk | Cloud storage and sync | Dedicated cloud backup |
|---|---|---|
| Access files across devices and share them | Usually a core purpose | May offer access, but sharing and collaboration are not necessarily its focus |
| Recover one deleted or changed file | May be possible through a trash or version-history feature, subject to its rules and retention | Often possible if the file was included and a recoverable version remains |
| Restore after computer failure | Can restore synced files, but may not include every folder or application file on the computer | May cover a broader set of computer files; confirm coverage and restore options for the product |
| Recover from ransomware | Version history may help, but sync can propagate encrypted changes | Historical versions may help if they predate the encryption and remain available |
| Recover after account compromise or deletion | Depends on account security, provider rules, and retention | Depends on account security, backup design, and retention; “backup” alone does not guarantee independence |
| Keep a copy offline | Not by itself | Not by itself; pair with a separate local copy if you need one |
Neither category is automatically safest for every person. Check the actual folders covered, whether prior versions are retained separately from the current synced state, the restore window, account eligibility, and whether you can recover an individual file or a whole computer.

Does cloud storage back up your files?
Sometimes it provides useful recovery features, but do not assume that syncing is the same as an independent backup. A recycle bin can help with accidental deletion, and version history can let you roll back a changed file. Those features have service-specific eligibility and retention limits. If the only copy of a file is in a synchronized account, account access problems or changes that sync across devices may leave you with fewer recovery options than you expected.
OneDrive
Microsoft’s OneDrive guidance, accessed October 4, 2026, says deleted files can be restored for 30 days in personal accounts and 93 days in work or school accounts, unless an administrator changes retention. Microsoft 365 subscribers can roll back an entire OneDrive by up to 30 days after an attack or other data loss. These are different recovery features, and the work/school period is subject to administrator settings. Microsoft also notes that online-only files deleted from OneDrive do not appear in the computer’s Recycle Bin or Trash. See Microsoft’s OneDrive deleted-file recovery guidance and OneDrive’s data-protection overview.

Google Drive
Google’s Drive bulk-restore help page, accessed October 4, 2026, labels the tool beta and says it keeps the last 25 days of revisions. That is a stated window for this restore tool, not a promise that every Drive file or account has the same recovery options. Google’s ransomware guidance emphasizes stopping synchronization before restoring: “Disconnect your account: To stop encrypted files from syncing and overwriting other versions from your computer, sign out of your Google Account on Drive for desktop.” Google then advises restoring files, removing the malware, and only afterward syncing again. See Google Drive’s bulk restore instructions.

Dedicated computer backup
Backblaze’s Computer Backup product information and version-history FAQ, accessed October 4, 2026, document 30-day version history by default, a free option for one-year history, and a Forever option that charges for versions older than one year. The cited price for those older versions is $0.006 per GB per month; verify current settings and terms before relying on it. Backblaze also says changing retention does not bring back versions already purged before the setting change. See Backblaze’s version-history information and Version History FAQ.
Can cloud storage protect you from ransomware?
Version history can help recover earlier, unencrypted copies, but it is not a complete safeguard. Google’s instructions show why timing matters: stop the infected device from synchronizing before attempting recovery, then clean the device before reconnecting it.

A 2023 USENIX Security study found that versioning helped against the ransomware tested across several providers, but it did not fully protect files when encryption happened before a backup was made. The provider-specific results describe the study’s 2023 tests, not guaranteed behavior of current services. Read the study, “RøB: Ransomware over BitTorrent”, as experimental evidence rather than a current product comparison.

- Reconnect only after the device is safe. Otherwise, syncing can reintroduce unwanted changes.
Should you keep an external hard drive too?
A portable external hard drive can provide a separate local copy, useful if an online account is unavailable or a cloud restore is incomplete. It is not invulnerable: ransomware can affect a drive left connected to an infected computer. Disconnect it after a backup, and test that you can restore files from it.

TechRadar describes the 3-2-1 approach as keeping three copies of data, on two storage technologies, with one copy offsite. It is a useful way to think about having different recovery paths, not a guarantee against every failure. The practical goal is to avoid depending on one device, one account, or one continuously synchronized copy. See TechRadar’s 2026 cloud-backup overview for its 3-2-1 framing.
What about business Microsoft 365 accounts?
Microsoft 365 Backup is an organizational product, not a default feature to assume for a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft Learn says it covers selected OneDrive accounts, SharePoint sites, and Exchange mailboxes, with append-only backup storage intended to protect restore points from malicious overwrites. Microsoft defines immutability as storage that “can’t be altered, deleted, or overwritten for a specified period of time.” The overview also documents a 90-day recovery grace period after offboarding. Organizations should confirm workload coverage, tenant eligibility, and offboarding implications in Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 Backup overview.
How to choose and check your setup
- For access and sharing: use cloud storage for the files you need across devices, but check whether the folders you care about are actually syncing.
- For computer recovery: choose a backup that explicitly covers the files you need and retains prior versions for a useful period.
- For important or irreplaceable files: keep another copy independent of the synchronized account; a disconnected external drive is one option.
- Before trouble occurs: confirm retention and account eligibility, enable version history or longer retention if appropriate, secure the account with strong authentication, and test restoring a sample file.
Do not wait for a failure to discover that a folder was excluded, a version expired, or a restore procedure is unfamiliar. A small test restore is a practical check that the backup includes what you expect and that you know how to retrieve it.
