Client-side and server-side tracking on Shopify are two transmission routes for the same kind of customer event. Client-side tracking uses a web pixel that runs in the visitor’s browser. Server-side tracking sends events through a server to the app owner. Shopify describes these as compatible methods, not as a way around browser or consent controls. The practical question is not which one is “more accurate.” It is which delivery path, privacy configuration, event coverage, and app behavior fit your store and your destinations.
How the two methods differ
Client-side tracking: web pixels
Shopify web pixels run in a visitor’s browser inside a sandbox. They subscribe to customer events through Shopify’s Web Pixels API, which Shopify names as the officially supported method for web-pixel integrations. The pixel receives event payloads and forwards them to its destination from the browser. Developers who build their own can follow Shopify’s guide to building web pixels; merchants usually meet them as app pixels or custom pixels listed under Customer events.

Server-side tracking: server pixels
Server pixels transmit events through a server to the app owner rather than from the visitor’s browser. Shopify says this can increase the number of customer events, and the number of events carrying store identification data, that reach app owners. Those are Shopify’s statements about the potential, and they depend on the app and on the permissions in place. Server pixels are not a separate pixel you install yourself. They exist only where the app owner provides them.

| Axis | Client-side (web pixel) | Server-side (server pixel) |
|---|---|---|
| Event path | Visitor’s browser to the destination | Shopify to a server operated by the app owner, then onward |
| Browser dependence | Affected by cookie restrictions and by ad blockers, per Shopify’s app-pixel help page | Shopify says server pixels do not depend on browser cookies for transmission in the same way; this is a difference in path, not a guarantee of delivery |
| Event and identity coverage | Limited to what reaches the browser pixel | Shopify says it can increase events and events with store identification data reaching the app owner, depending on the app and permissions |
| Privacy and consent | Governed by Shopify’s privacy settings and the pixel’s declared requirements | Still subject to the store’s customer privacy and consent settings |
| Availability | Depends on the app or custom pixel you install | Depends on whether the app owner offers server pixels; Shopify advises asking the app owner |
| Duplicate handling | Not stated by Shopify for every integration; check the vendor’s documentation | Not stated by Shopify for every integration; check the vendor’s documentation |
Does server-side tracking bypass ad blockers or cookie restrictions?
No. Shopify does not describe server pixels as a bypass, and the reasoning matters before you choose a method. Shopify’s app-pixel help page states the browser-side limits plainly:

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.

- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- On cookie restrictions: “Intelligent tracking prevention shortens or limits cookies, which reduces attribution accuracy even though the pixel still runs and sends events.” (Shopify Help Center, App pixels)
- On ad blockers: “Ad blockers can block the web pixel entirely, which prevents its events from being sent to that destination.” (Shopify Help Center, App pixels)
The first sentence describes third-party attribution accuracy, not whether Shopify’s own records change. Shopify states that its own reports and order records are not affected by those third-party attribution issues. A server pixel changes the route events take to the app owner, which can help a destination receive more events. It does not make the destination’s attribution perfect, and it does not override a visitor’s browser settings for the browser-based parts of your stack.
Do server pixels still need customer consent?
Yes. Shopify’s documentation is explicit that “Server pixels are still subject to your store’s customer privacy and consent settings.” Shopify’s Customer Privacy API is browser-based and covers Shopify-managed surfaces such as pixels, audiences, and checkout. It checks merchant configuration, customer location, and the consent given for the relevant purpose. In regions configured to require consent, non-essential processing is disallowed by default until consent is given.

Pixels also declare what they need. According to Shopify’s pixel privacy documentation, an app pixel can declare required customer privacy settings, and Shopify’s pixel manager loads the pixel only when permission exists for those settings. The practical result is that a server pixel with unconsented events may have those events restricted, not delivered in full.

Should you run web pixels and server pixels together?
Shopify’s merchant help says an app pixel can transmit data through web pixels, server pixels, or both. Running both can help more customer events reach the destination, but that benefit comes with a condition: the app has to align the two streams so the same purchase is not counted twice. Shopify’s documentation does not establish a universal deduplication mechanism that applies to every integration, so this is the step where you need the vendor’s specifics.
Decision framework
- Start with the app. Confirm whether the app offers server pixels at all. If it does not, the choice is between web pixels and whatever else the app provides.
- Check consent configuration first. Make sure your privacy settings and any declared pixel requirements match the regions you sell into. A faster event path does not help events that are restricted at the consent layer.
- Ask how duplicates are prevented. If you run both paths, get the vendor’s written explanation of event matching and deduplication before you rely on the totals.
- Accept the limits of browser-side tracking. If your attribution depends on browser pixels alone, expect the cookie and ad-blocker effects Shopify describes, and judge reports accordingly.
- Verify with test events. Compare what the destination reports against Shopify’s own order records for a controlled set of orders, and document the discrepancies rather than assuming either side is complete.
What is and is not established
Shopify’s documentation covers the general behavior of app pixels, server pixels, the Web Pixels API, and the Customer Privacy API. It does not compare third-party tracking vendors, publish server-side feature availability by vendor, or state pricing or partner-program terms for vendors. Those details belong in each provider’s own documentation. No benchmark, conversion-lift figure, or measured performance difference between the two methods is established in Shopify’s official material, so none is claimed here.
