Clean them with the least moisture their maker allows: switch off and unplug electronics first, apply approved cleaners to a cloth rather than the device, and let everything dry completely before use. These are five accessories worth checking routinely—not a scientifically ranked list of the dirtiest gear.
Before you clean any gaming gear
- Switch off and unplug wired accessories. Remove replaceable batteries when the manufacturer advises it.
- Never pour or spray cleaner directly onto a device. Put an approved cleaner on a cloth instead.
- Keep moisture out of seams, keys, ports, microphones, sensors and charging contacts. Do not submerge electronics that are not explicitly waterproof.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth and the least moisture the maker permits. Let the device dry fully before reconnecting or wearing it.
- Do not assume alcohol is safe across brands: Nintendo’s Switch guidance describes a roughly 70% alcohol disinfectant applied lightly to a cloth, while Razer advises against alcohol-based cleaning solutions on its devices.
Manufacturer directions vary by model and material. Check the care instructions for your exact product before removing parts or applying a cleaner.

1. Keyboard: remove loose crumbs before wiping
Debris can settle between keys, where a surface wipe will not reach. Microsoft advises disconnecting its keyboard, turning it upside down and gently tapping it, then using compressed air or a gentle dusting-brush vacuum. Logitech also recommends compressed air for its devices.

- Use compressed air or a gentle dusting-brush vacuum for remaining debris, following the keyboard maker’s instructions.
- Wipe key surfaces with a lightly dampened lint-free cloth or cotton swab. Do not let water drip inside, and do not spray liquid onto the keyboard.
Do not remove keycaps unless the instructions for your model allow it. Microsoft’s guidance for its accessories says, “Clean monthly or whenever needed”; that interval applies to Microsoft accessories, not every gaming keyboard. Microsoft’s cleaning instructions and Logitech’s device-care guidance provide their respective methods.

2. Mouse: clean the wheel and sensor carefully
A mouse’s outer surface, scroll wheel and optical sensor can gather residue during everyday handling. Switch it off or disconnect it first. Microsoft recommends gently wiping those areas with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with mild soap and water; Logitech recommends a lightly moistened lint-free cloth for its mice.
- Switch off or disconnect the mouse.
- Wipe the outer surface and wheel gently with the method approved for your model.
- Use a lightly moistened cotton swab or cloth on the sensor only if the maker’s directions allow it. Keep moisture away from openings, and do not let liquid pool around the sensor.
Microsoft’s page also permits an isopropyl alcohol solution of 70% or less for its mouse and keyboard. That is Microsoft-specific advice, not a universal rule for gaming peripherals. 3. Controller: follow the instructions for its brand
Cleaning advice for one controller should not be transferred to another. Nintendo’s instructions cover Switch, Joy-Con and accessories; Razer’s controller guidance specifies a different approach.
Nintendo Switch and Joy-Con
- Power off the console and unplug accessories before cleaning.
- For routine cleaning, wipe with a soft, clean cloth dampened with water and wrung out well.
- Do not pour liquid onto the controller or submerge it. Wait until it is completely dry before use.
For disinfection, Nintendo describes lightly applying a consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol to a cloth. Razer controllers
Razer calls for a lint-free microfiber cloth and compressed air for hard-to-reach areas. Follow Razer’s device-cleaning guidance for its products rather than applying Nintendo’s disinfectant advice to a different controller.
4. Headset: treat cushions, plastics and lenses differently
Headsets combine materials that may need different care, including plastic, coatings, cables, ear cushions and, on VR headsets, lenses. A cleaner suitable for one part may harm another.

Headset body and ear cushions
Logitech recommends particular fragrance-free wipes or makeup-removing tissue for some plastic headset parts, with separate guidance for leatherette earpads. Its guidance allows alcohol wipes on leatherette only on a limited basis. Razer, by contrast, advises against alcohol-based cleaning solutions on its devices and suggests a well-wrung microfiber cloth with mild soap and water for its audio peripherals. Check whether wipes are approved for your exact device, and remove detachable pads only if the headset maker allows it.
VR lenses
For VIVE Focus 3 lenses, HTC VIVE says to use a clean, dry cloth and never use cleaning solution on the lenses. Keep lens cleaning separate from advice for the headset’s other surfaces. Follow HTC VIVE’s Focus 3 cleaning instructions for that model.

Let cleaned parts dry fully before wearing the headset. Logitech’s recommendations are in its device-care guidance; Razer’s are in its cleaning guidance.

Chair care depends on the actual upholstery. Razer’s published instructions distinguish EPU synthetic/PVC leather, mesh and Alcantara, and recommend different tools for each.
- EPU synthetic/PVC leather: Use a soft or microfiber cloth with warm water. For stubborn stains on the specified synthetic-leather category, Razer advises a soft brush with mild leather cleaner.
- Mesh: Use a soft or microfiber cloth with warm water; brush the mesh to remove crumbs and grime.
- Alcantara: Dust with a soft brush or dry cloth, or vacuum. Then wipe with a damp white cotton cloth.
Air-dry the chair before using it, and avoid harsh chemicals and rough abrasives. Check the chair’s material label and manual before using any product; Razer’s recommendations apply to the materials and products covered by its cleaning guidance.
