Clay Turns Model Responses Into Host-Rendered Interfaces

Clay’s A2UI host renders model-emitted JSON as React controls, with bound data, interaction updates and explicit validation refusals.

Clay’s A2UI pattern lets a model describe an interface as catalog-constrained JSON, then lets a host render that description as React widgets. Instead of returning a paragraph of trip-budget figures, the model can produce a slider, table, chart and status badge; when someone changes an input, the host sends the interaction back so the agent can recompute dependent values.

How Clay’s A2UI loop works

Harish Kotra describes A2UI as an agent-to-interface loop: a prompt goes to a model, the model returns an A2UI message, a React renderer displays the widgets, and a widget event can trigger an agent update. The model emits JSON naming components from a catalog owned by the host—not HTML, JSX or executable code. Clay’s interface is described as a chat rail, a generated surface and an inspector that exposes the messages exchanged.

A typical message includes a surfaceUpdate with a surface ID and component list, a dataModelUpdate with values for that surface, and a short text field. Components have IDs; container components refer to children by ID rather than embedding nested component objects. A widget can bind to a dotted path in the data model, with the intended invariant that its displayed value matches the stored value at that path.

This flat, ID-linked representation is intended to make generation simpler and updates possible by replacing a component with the same ID. That is a design rationale reported by the project’s author, not an independently evaluated result.

What the host lets the model express

The described catalog contains 10 component types: Column, Row, Text, Slider, Toggle, Table, BarChart, Stat, Badge and Button. Kotra says the same catalog informs the model prompt, server-side Zod schemas and client allowlist. On the client, an exhaustive TypeScript registry is intended to require an implementation for each catalog entry at compile time.

The important boundary is not that the model can design anything it wants; it is that it can compose only the interface vocabulary and props the host supports. Compared with generated executable markup, that limits what an emitted response can ask the client to render. The account does not establish that the catalog or the full application is free of security flaws.

Where session state lives

Kotra describes two runtimes that share the turn engine, prompt and guardrails. In the Workers runtime, a session ID routes to a Cloudflare Durable Object, with SQLite-backed state. In the Node runtime, a process-local Map holds session state. The author presents the Node option as a way to demonstrate that Durable Objects provide persistence rather than define the A2UI protocol.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

The implementation article names Cloudflare Agents SDK 0.24.0 as the version used at the time; that is an implementation detail, not a claim about the current SDK release. The Workers/Durable Objects arrangement is the described option when session persistence is wanted, while the Node Map is the simpler fallback and does not provide the same persistent storage.

How model requests are configured

The described model call targets a configurable {baseUrl}/chat/completions endpoint, requests a JSON-object response format and disables streaming. Particle.ai, LM Studio, Ollama and Gemini’s OpenAI-compatible endpoint are named as examples by the author. Current provider compatibility and endpoint behavior were not independently verified, so treat them as examples to validate against the service you choose.

Settings include the endpoint, model and API key. Kotra says the key is kept out of browser responses. The article also notes a token-budget discussion contrasting 8,192 with 32,768, but those figures are not presented as universal requirements or independently tested guidance; the appropriate limit depends on the model and response contract.

How Clay handles interaction

In the described slider flow, the client optimistically writes the new value to the widget’s bound data path and sends the event to /api/interact. Before asking the model to recompute, the server seeds the changed bound value. The response includes the full component list and a data-model update; the client then synchronizes bound widget values from that model.

The project compares numeric fields in other components while excluding the component the user touched and slider-range metadata such as min, max and step. That distinction matters: a test should establish that dependent values changed, not mistake the slider’s own displayed input for a recomputed result.

Kotra reports a real-browser example in which moving a hotel-per-night slider from ₹2,500 to ₹6,000 changed the trip total from ₹28,000 to ₹38,500 and the remaining budget from ₹12,000 to ₹1,500, while also updating the per-day average, table, chart and status badge. He says the client computed none of those downstream numbers. These are the author’s reported results; they were not independently reproduced.

Validation, retries and refusals

The safety design described by the author combines a fixed component vocabulary with server-side validation and a client allowlist. Kotra reports that the client does not use dangerouslySetInnerHTML, eval or dynamic imports. He describes unknown component names, forbidden props, injection-like patterns, duplicate IDs, dangling child references and multiple roots as contract violations that receive a final refusal.

Malformed emissions—such as truncated JSON or a missing component ID—may be requested again for up to three attempts. The author says the rejected payload is not patched: the previous surface remains visible and the inspector records the refusal. This separates repairable emission defects from unsupported output. Retrying every failure instead could conceal whether the model tried to cross the catalog boundary.

An allowlist and refusal path are useful controls, but they are not proof of security. The evidence here is the project author’s account of implementation and tests, not an external security audit or independent source review.

What the reported verifier checks

Kotra says npm run verify runs 11 checks against a live model. The listed checks exercise whether different prompts produce different component-type sets, repeated prompts can yield different trees within the same schema, a slider changes at least two other components’ numeric values, unsupported components are rejected, and script-like or event-handler-like payloads stay off the renderable surface.

The author explicitly characterizes the suite as model-dependent and occasionally failing, not as a deterministic pass-rate guarantee. One reported failure involved an interaction turn returning two components in one component body. The account also describes implementation snags involving Node’s TypeScript stripping, package peer dependencies, shared Chrome debug ports, request bodies being read before forwarding, full state replacement in the SDK, passing local environment values into the development runtime, and test probes that counted a slider’s own number as a dependent change. These are lessons from this implementation context, not universal behavior of the tools involved.

When this pattern is useful—and what it trades away

Clay’s approach fits interfaces where a person needs to adjust inputs and inspect related values, such as a trip budget, rather than repeatedly asking a model to restate calculations in prose. The host owns the widgets and data-binding rules; the model supplies a constrained composition and can participate in recomputing values after an event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is that the model’s interface vocabulary is bounded by the catalog, and correctness still depends on validating both the generated structure and the agent’s updates. A live-model test can exercise realistic turns, but the author’s own account shows why it cannot be treated as stable proof that every response will satisfy the contract.
