ClauseHound helps pet owners compare the terms of actual pet-insurance policies without treating a plan label or common industry practice as a coverage promise. It extracts what the supplied documents say, flags what they leave unclear, and directs unresolved questions to the insurer or policy—not to a guess.
What ClauseHound is—and what it cannot decide
Pet insurance is governed by policy terms, and coverage details can vary by insurer and jurisdiction. Washington’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner advises shoppers to compare “what the policy will and won’t cover” (Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner). A label such as “accident and illness” does not establish whether a particular diagnosis, treatment, or service is covered.

ClauseHound is a document-based comparison aid: it helps organize policy language, identify missing or conflicting information, and prepare questions for the insurer. It is not an insurer, a coverage guarantee, or a substitute for the policy and written clarification from the company. Its supported insurers, document formats, and launch geography are not established here; no live insurer integration or nationwide uniform rule should be assumed.

It reports what the document says
A useful comparison keeps the policy’s wording and where it appears, rather than converting a broad plan name into a conclusion about a claim. The relevant material may be spread across a policy, declarations, endorsements, or quote summary.
#1 Best Overall
It separates missing information from an exclusion
“Not found in the supplied document” is not the same as “not covered.” If the document does not establish a term, ClauseHound should mark it as unresolved rather than invent an answer or treat silence as a denial.
It flags conflicts for confirmation
If a quote summary appears to differ from the sample policy, endorsement, or declarations, the conflict needs insurer confirmation. The policy version, date, and jurisdiction should be recorded when available, because the cited U.S. consumer guidance does not establish one uniform rule for every state or policy.
What to compare in each policy
Use the same questions for every quote and policy document. Washington, California, Illinois, and NAIC consumer materials all direct shoppers to examine coverage, exclusions, cost-sharing, waiting periods, limits, and pricing inputs rather than relying on the plan name alone.

| Comparison point | What to extract | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Covered conditions and exclusions | Covered events; excluded conditions or services; hereditary or congenital terms, if stated. | A product category does not establish coverage for a particular diagnosis or treatment. |
| Pre-existing conditions | The insurer’s definition; lookback or symptom rules, if stated; treatment of curable conditions; renewal wording. | Prior symptoms, treatment, or medical advice may affect eligibility, and policies differ. Some insurers may treat a condition covered during a term as pre-existing at renewal. |
| Waiting periods | Duration, start date, affected benefits, and exceptions for each category. | Coverage may not begin immediately or uniformly across benefits. |
| Deductible | Amount and whether it applies annually, per condition, or on another stated basis. | Both the amount and how it applies affect what the owner pays. |
| Reimbursement and coinsurance | Reimbursement percentage or benefit schedule; calculation basis; coinsurance or copay terms. | Do not assume reimbursement is calculated from the full veterinary invoice: the policy’s method determines how a covered bill translates into payment. |
| Limits | Annual, lifetime, per-condition, and service-specific caps, as applicable. | A cap can limit or end benefits even when the condition is otherwise covered. |
| Premium and pricing inputs | The quote amount and stated factors such as the pet’s age, breed, location, and selected coverage. | Premiums vary with pet and coverage characteristics, so compare prices alongside benefits and limits. |
Questions to resolve before choosing
What will this policy actually cover for my pet?
Check the coverage definition and exclusions against the condition or service you care about. If the wording does not answer the question, ask the insurer to identify the applicable policy language and provide clarification in writing.
Rank #3
Could my pet’s history count as pre-existing?
Compare the insurer’s actual definition with the pet’s symptoms, treatment, and medical advice history. Do not rely on a short description to decide whether a condition is excluded; ask the insurer how its definition applies to that history. Clarify renewal treatment as well when relevant.
When does coverage begin?
Check the start date and waiting-period wording separately for accident, illness, and any other benefit categories the policy distinguishes. The applicable timing and exceptions must come from the specific policy.

How much would I pay before reimbursement, and how is it calculated?
Read the deductible’s application basis, reimbursement method, and any copay or coinsurance together. The same veterinary expense can produce different reimbursement under different calculation methods.

Use the comparison to make a personal trade-off
There is no universally best deductible, reimbursement rate, or policy established by the cited consumer materials. A decision depends in part on the owner’s budget and ability to cover an emergency bill. ClauseHound should show the premium, deductible, reimbursement mechanics, and caps together so the trade-off is visible; the owner can then set an affordable out-of-pocket ceiling rather than rely on a one-size-fits-all ranking.
Where the decision engine should stop
- Do not infer coverage from a plan name, a common industry pattern, or an incomplete document.
- Do not diagnose whether a condition is pre-existing from a brief user description.
- Do not show a coverage start date, waiting-period scope, or exception unless the relevant policy supports it.
- Send missing terms, ambiguous wording, and conflicts between documents to the insurer for confirmation.
These limits are central to a trustworthy comparison: the tool can make policy evidence easier to inspect, but the contract and the insurer’s clarification remain the basis for resolving a coverage question.
