ChatGPT’s voice features and Claude’s documented mobile dictation do not have the same established audio-handling policy. OpenAI says Live and Advanced Voice audio clips are kept with the transcript for 30 days, while Standard voice audio is deleted after transcription unless you share it for model improvement. Anthropic says audio used for dictation in Claude’s mobile apps is deleted after conversion to text; the text remains subject to chat-retention rules. That Claude statement covers dictation, not a verified equivalent to ChatGPT’s live spoken conversation.
Are Claude voice mode and ChatGPT voice comparable?
Not on the available official documentation. OpenAI documents ChatGPT Live, Advanced Voice, and Standard voice as distinct workflows. Anthropic’s cited audio-specific guidance describes dictation in the Claude mobile apps: speech is converted to text, and the recording is deleted afterward. It does not establish how a separate live conversational voice feature would handle raw audio.

- Live and Advanced Voice: Associated audio clips are stored with the transcript in chat history and retained for 30 days. Deleting the chat triggers deletion of associated audio and video clips within 30 days, except where retention is needed for security, safety, or legal reasons, or a clip was previously disassociated from the account.
- Standard voice: Audio is transcribed before the response and deleted after transcription unless you choose to share it for training. OpenAI says the audio is deleted even if transcription fails.
Archiving is not deletion: it removes a chat from the sidebar but does not delete the chat or its associated media. The 30-day periods are OpenAI’s stated service-policy periods, not results from an independent privacy study.
Does ChatGPT use voice chats to train models?
ChatGPT separates general model improvement from sharing voice clips. OpenAI states: “We do not use the associated audio or video clips for training unless you choose to share them for model improvement as described above.” That statement applies to associated clips; it does not mean every part of a voice conversation is excluded from training under every setting.

When Improve the model for everyone is on, transcripts and other files may be used depending on your plan and settings. Audio and video clips require an additional sharing choice. For Free, Plus, and Pro users in personal workspaces, OpenAI says clip sharing can be enabled in Settings → Data Controls by enabling model improvement and the relevant audio/video recording toggles. Business, Enterprise, and Edu users cannot share voice conversation clips for model training through those controls.

Turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, but it does not remove them from chat history. If you stop sharing clips, new clips will no longer be used for training; clips already disassociated from your account may continue to be used. OpenAI says shared clips may be reviewed by its teams and that it takes steps to reduce personal information before using them for training. Does Claude keep dictation recordings or use them for training?
Anthropic says that in Claude mobile dictation, spoken input is converted to text and the audio recording is deleted after conversion. Its statement, “We do not use your voice for training our models,” is about the documented dictation workflow. The resulting text remains subject to the applicable chat-retention rules.
For consumer Claude accounts, Anthropic says deleted conversations disappear from chat history immediately and are deleted from backend storage within 30 days. This is a different retention measure from the dictation audio deletion: one concerns the recording after conversion, the other concerns a deleted conversation.

How do Claude’s model-improvement and deletion controls work?
For consumer Claude products, Anthropic says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude when the user allows it. If enabled, data may be retained in de-identified form in model-training pipelines for up to five years. Anthropic specifies that this applies to new or resumed chats after model improvement is enabled.
- Turning off model improvement prevents previous or new chats from being used for future training, but does not remove material already in training runs or trained models.
- Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when model improvement is enabled.
- Safety-review flags and explicit opt-ins are additional cases in which consumer chat or session data may be used for improvement.
- Submitting feedback can store the entire related conversation in secured backend storage for up to five years and may allow it to be used for research or training.

What should business, school, and managed-account users check?
Consumer policies should not be assumed to apply to managed accounts. OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default, and organizations may manage workspace privacy and retention controls. Anthropic’s cited commercial-products policy says inputs and outputs are not used for training by default, with feedback or explicit permission as exceptions; feedback conversations may be retained for up to five years.
If you use an organization-managed account, check the applicable workspace policy or ask its administrator. The provider’s consumer settings and retention terms may not describe what your organization has configured.
How to review the controls in each app
ChatGPT
- Open Settings → Data Controls.
- Review Improve the model for everyone and any audio/video sharing toggles shown for your account. Availability depends on plan and workspace.
- To remove a conversation from history and trigger deletion of its associated clips under OpenAI’s stated schedule, delete the chat. Archiving only hides it from the sidebar.
Claude
- Open Claude’s Privacy Settings and review the model-improvement setting for your consumer account.
- Use an Incognito chat when you want that conversation excluded from model improvement.
- Delete a conversation separately if you want it removed from chat history and subject to Anthropic’s stated backend deletion timeframe.
Labels and available controls can change, and settings vary by account type. Verify the options shown in your current app; managed-account users should also confirm their organization’s policy.

Neither provider’s policy periods establish that one service is categorically safer. The practical differences are what kind of voice feature is documented, whether raw audio is retained, which training controls apply, and whether the account is personal or managed.
