Claude Cowork: Can It Replace ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity?

Anthropic says Claude Cowork can handle a larger task from any conversation, with chats, projects, connectors, and skills carrying over. That convenience alone does not show it can replace ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for every user.

The Claude feature most closely matching this headline is Cowork, which Anthropic said became available from any conversation on September 16, 2026. The change is meant to let users move from a quick question to a larger task without choosing a separate mode first. That may make Claude more convenient for some workflows, but it does not establish that it replaces ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for everyone—or verify that any particular user canceled those subscriptions.

What Claude feature does the headline point to?

The closest match in Anthropic’s official materials is its September 16, 2026 announcement that Claude Cowork came to every conversation. The headline does not name a feature, so identifying Cowork is an inference, not a confirmed description of the writer’s intended experience. Anthropic describes a workflow in which a user can ask a quick question or hand Claude a larger assignment, such as creating a report, spreadsheet, or presentation, without first selecting a separate mode. Anthropic’s release notes also say chats, Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, and skills carry over.

The practical appeal is continuity: a conversation can grow into a more substantial task without the user having to start by choosing a distinct workflow. That is a product-design change, not proof that Claude will complete every task successfully or that the feature is available to every account. Check the Claude interface and current account details for access in your region and plan.

What does Cowork change about a Claude task?

From a question to a larger deliverable

Anthropic’s examples include reports, spreadsheets, and presentations. The announcement describes the kinds of work a user can hand off; it does not specify that every account can create or edit every file type, nor does it establish the quality of the result. For a real decision, try a representative task from your own work and check the finished file, factual claims, and formatting.

Context that carries across work

Anthropic says relevant chats, projects, connectors, and skills carry over. That could reduce repeated setup when a larger task builds on earlier context. The value depends on the material you actually use, whether the needed connector or skill is available to your account, and how reliably Claude uses the context. Anthropic’s December 2025 connector announcement described a directory of more than 75 connectors and linked them to the Model Context Protocol (MCP); that is a dated company figure, not a current count. The announcement should not be used to infer present-day connector availability.

Does Cowork replace ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity?

The feature announcement does not provide a head-to-head comparison with those services. Whether one subscription can replace another depends on what you ask it to do, how much correction its work needs, which integrations and file outputs you rely on, and what your plan includes. Anthropic’s general description of Claude’s uses—such as summarization, writing, Q&A, and coding—dates to its March 2023 product introduction and is not a current comparison of subscription features. That introduction is historical context, not evidence that Claude now covers every task offered by another service.

A useful comparison is a small, repeatable test using your own work rather than a broad claim that one assistant is best. Run the same tasks in each service and note:

  • Task quality: Does the result meet your requirements, and how much fact-checking or rewriting does it take?
  • Long-task continuity: Can the assistant use the relevant instructions and context as the work develops?
  • Integrations: Are the connectors you need available and suitable for your workflow?
  • Deliverables: Can the account you have produce or edit the files you need?
  • Reliability: How often does the assistant miss an instruction or require a retry?
  • Plan fit: Does the specific plan include the model and features you use, with limits that work for your usage?
  • Privacy: Does the service’s data handling meet the needs of the information you intend to share?

Record the service, plan, model selection, region, date, and any usage limits during the test. Subscription features and access can change, and the cited Cowork announcement does not establish current prices, limits, or plan inclusion across services.

What Anthropic’s model announcements do—and don’t—show

Anthropic’s September 2026 release notes list Claude Opus 5.5 and say it performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work while costing 40% less to run than Opus 5. Those are claims by Anthropic about its models and operating costs, not an independent consumer-subscription comparison or a statement that a particular plan includes either model. Consult the release notes for the announcement, then verify current plan access and pricing separately.

Likewise, Anthropic’s June 2026 announcement described Claude Fable 5 as generally available and made broad claims about software engineering, knowledge work, vision, and scientific research. Those are the company’s characterizations; they do not demonstrate superiority over ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity in a user’s own tasks.

What would make canceling subscriptions a sound choice?

A feature can make one service more convenient without making the others unnecessary. Cancel only after checking that the remaining service handles the tasks for which you used each subscription, including any specialized search, integrations, or deliverables you depend on. Consider keeping access until you have tested the workflows that matter and confirmed that losing another service will not interrupt them.

The personal claim in the headline—that the writer canceled three subscriptions—cannot be verified by product announcements. It belongs in an article only if the writer can support it with genuine account history and explain which tasks shaped the decision. Without that first-hand evidence, the defensible conclusion is narrower: Cowork’s move into any conversation may simplify certain Claude workflows, while whether it replaces another assistant remains a task- and account-specific decision.
