The sidebar is available on paid Claude plans, subject to Google Workspace installation and administrator controls.
What Anthropic launched
Anthropic announced Claude for Google Workspace on October 6, 2026. The release combines a Google Workspace Marketplace add-on with separate connectors for Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Both are described as beta features. The Marketplace listing, updated October 5, 2026, names Anthropic as publisher and labels the app “Paid”; that label does not spell out plan eligibility or pricing. Anthropic’s launch announcement and the Google Workspace Marketplace listing provide the current launch details.

How the sidebar and connectors differ
The key distinction is where a task starts and what files Claude can reach:
| Feature | Where you start | File scope |
|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace sidebar add-on | In an open Docs, Sheets, or Slides file | The file where the add-on is open; it can use selected text, cells, or slides as context. |
| Google Workspace connectors | In a Claude conversation | Google files available under your existing Google sharing permissions. |
Anthropic describes the sidebar as opening beside the file so you can work without switching apps or browser tabs. It is not a Drive-wide file browser: the sidebar cannot open or create other files in Drive. The connectors, by contrast, support requests made from Claude to create or edit Google files. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner must enable the connectors. Anthropic’s Help Center guide explains the scope and setup.

What Claude can do in each app
Google Docs
Claude can draft, rewrite, restructure, summarize, and restyle document content. It can make changes in the open file; larger rewrites may appear as suggestion cards. The add-on cannot read, reply to, or resolve comments, nor can it accept or reject suggestions already in the document.
Google Sheets
Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, add tabs, and clean or analyze data. Anthropic says some data-cleaning or joining work may use Python before results are written back to the spreadsheet. Connected Sheets tabs backed by live BigQuery data are outside the add-on’s supported scope: Claude cannot read or edit them. It also cannot create triggers, custom menus, or scheduled refreshes.

- Improved Typing Posture: Type more naturally with a curved, split keyframe and reduce muscle strain on your wrists and forearms thanks to the sloping keyboard design
- Pillowed Wrist Rest: Curved wrist rest with memory foam layer offers typing comfort with 54 per cent more wrist support; 25 per cent less wrist bending compared to standard keyboard without palm rest
- Perfect Stroke Keys: Scooped keys match the shape of your fingertips so you can type with confidence on a wireless keyboard crafted for comfort, precision and fluidity
- Adjustable Palm Lift: Whether seated or standing, keep your wrists in total comfort and a natural typing posture with ergonomically-designed tilt legs of 0, -4 and -7 degrees
- Ergonomist Approved: The ERGO K860 wireless ergonomic keyboard is certified by United States Ergonomics to improve posture and lower muscle strain
Google Slides
Claude can build slides using a deck’s layouts and themes, tighten or restyle existing slides, and check for overlapping or off-slide elements. New charts are inserted as images rather than linked Sheets charts, and the add-on cannot refresh an existing linked chart.
How to install Claude in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
One Marketplace installation covers Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Anthropic says the add-on is in public beta on all paid Claude plans, but access also depends on Google Workspace installation and any organization policies.

- Open the sidebar. In the file’s menu, select Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
If your organization blocks Marketplace apps, a Workspace administrator must allowlist or install Claude. A Google Workspace super administrator can deploy it organization-wide or for selected groups or organizational units. Workspace administrators control whether the app can be installed or used; Claude organization administrators control which connectors, skills, and models members can access.
Choose how edits are applied
The default Ask before edits mode pauses for approval before applying changes. Accept all edits lets ordinary edits go through without stopping for approval, though some actions still require confirmation. In Docs, edits are direct unless you choose a review mode; this setting does not give Claude the ability to manage existing document comments or suggestions.

File access, browser support, and task limits
- Sidebar scope: Claude works only in the file where the add-on is open. It cannot open, create, copy, or export other Drive files, or download the current file as a PDF.
- Keep the sidebar open: The add-on must remain open while a task runs. Closing it interrupts the work.
- Supported browsers: Chrome, Edge, and Safari are supported in this beta; Firefox is not.
- Operation duration: Anthropic says Google may stop a single operation after up to six minutes. For larger tasks, divide the work into smaller stages.
These limits apply to the sidebar add-on; the connectors use a different workflow and file scope. See Anthropic’s current support guide for the documented add-on behavior.

What Anthropic says about privacy and administration
Anthropic says the add-on sends the open file’s content, messages, and attachments to Claude to generate a response, and that this content is not used to train its models. Its guide says the extension requests permission to display third-party web content in Google applications and to view or manage the specific document, spreadsheet, or presentation where it is installed. Anthropic says Google enforces that one-open-file scope and that the extension does not request general Drive, Gmail, or Calendar access.

According to Anthropic, Team and Enterprise use is covered by its Commercial Terms and Data Processing Addendum; Pro and Max use is covered by its Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy. The guide describes deletion within 30 days, subject to exceptions, and says the extension does not inherit custom organizational retention settings. These are Anthropic’s statements; review the current guide and applicable terms for your account and organization.
Anthropic’s guide also says third-party inference, Zero Data Retention, and HIPAA-ready use are not supported for this beta. Do not treat the add-on as suitable for protected health information.
