Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo move 15 months of Claude Code project history safely, treat it as three separate things: instruction files such as CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md, Claude Code’s local auto-memory files, and session transcripts. Inventory each before migrating; there is no documented universal command that transfers every artifact from long-term Claude Code use.
What to include in your migration
- Instructions: project-, user-, or organization-level
CLAUDE.mdandAGENTS.mdfiles. These are reusable guidance, and project files can be version-controlled when they are intended for a team. - Auto memory: Claude Code’s repository-specific notes, typically in a
memorydirectory beneath~/.claude/projects/<project>/. The directory includesMEMORY.md, which indexes the notes; topic files may be loaded on demand. - Session transcripts: local plain-text conversation history in
~/.claude/projects/. Preserve these if you need to consult or resume particular sessions, rather than assuming they are the same as curated memory. - Other coding-agent configuration: settings such as MCP servers, commands, subagents, or skills, if you are moving supported configuration from another coding agent.
Anthropic describes sessions as starting with a fresh context window: persistent instructions and auto memory supply reusable context, while transcripts preserve conversation history. Those roles are different, so decide which matter to your move instead of copying an undifferentiated “memory” folder.

Identify your source and destination setup first
Before copying anything, note the Claude Code version, operating systems, account or provider setup, and repository location on both machines. Also check whether your setup changes the normal storage locations: CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR can change the configuration directory, and autoMemoryDirectory can configure a different auto-memory location. Repository naming and location affect the project-specific path as well.
Use the actual paths in your environment rather than treating ~/.claude as a guaranteed location. If the source or destination uses a different configuration or auto-memory directory, identify that override before making a backup. Anthropic documents the default locations and configuration options, but does not provide a single platform-independent filesystem recipe for every setup.

Inspect instructions and auto memory in Claude Code
Review what the current project loads
In Claude Code, run /memory to list and open memory files, including auto-memory files. Run /context to see which instruction files have loaded. These checks help distinguish a file that exists on disk from one that is actually contributing context to the session.
Instruction discovery and precedence depend on scope and location. Claude Code can read a repository’s AGENTS.md in place of CLAUDE.md; a CLAUDE.md higher in the working-directory path can also affect whether AGENTS.md is read by default. Verify the behavior for the project you are moving instead of blindly duplicating both files, which can create conflicting guidance.

Keep team rules and personal notes distinct
Version-control project instructions that are meant to be shared with collaborators. Auto memory is local to a machine by default: Anthropic says each repository has a project-specific auto-memory directory, shared by its worktrees and subdirectories, but not automatically shared across machines or cloud environments. Claude Code loads the first 200 lines or 25 KB of auto memory at session start; additional topic files may be read when relevant. Anthropic recommends keeping a short CLAUDE.md under 200 lines.
Use /memory to review, edit, or delete auto-memory files. Before transferring them, check that the notes are still useful and do not contain information you do not want carried to the new machine. A curated, current set of notes is easier to verify than an indiscriminate copy of everything accumulated over time.

Move Claude Code files deliberately
For the same Claude Code project, preserve the instruction files and auto-memory files you have identified, along with any transcripts you explicitly need. Copy the relevant files from their actual source locations to the corresponding locations in the destination setup, accounting for path or configuration overrides. Anthropic’s documentation does not define a one-command Claude Code-to-Claude Code migration that guarantees transfer of instructions, auto memory, and every historical session.
- On the source machine, open the project and run
/memoryand/context. Record which files are in use and locate their actual paths. - Back up the selected instruction files, auto-memory directory, and any session transcripts you need. Keep these categories identifiable in the backup rather than merging them into one file.
- On the destination, open the same repository or its migrated copy, and check the applicable Claude Code configuration and auto-memory paths.
- Place the files you intend to preserve in the destination’s corresponding locations. Do not overwrite destination files without first deciding how to reconcile differences.
- Start a fresh Claude Code session in the project and verify the loaded context as described below.
Use /import only for its documented purpose
If you are bringing supported configuration from another coding agent into Claude Code, Anthropic documents an import workflow. In the CLI, claude import starts the workflow; the CLI reference also documents --dry-run and --yes. The in-product /import workflow can copy supported configuration, including instruction files, MCP servers, commands, subagents, and skills. The CLI reference lists Claude Code v2.1.213 or later as a requirement.

This is a cross-agent configuration import, not a documented transfer of Claude Code’s own historical session transcripts or auto-memory directory. For those local artifacts, inventory and preserve the files you need separately.

Handle transcripts and retention separately
Claude Code stores local session transcripts as plain text under ~/.claude/projects/ by default. Anthropic’s data-usage documentation says the 30-day default applies to local caching for commercial users and can be changed with cleanupPeriodDays. It should not be assumed to describe every account category or setting.

Because the supplied scenario spans 15 months, do not assume every transcript from that period still exists in the local cache. Check the source machine for the sessions you need before relying on them. If you have a separate backup, identify it explicitly; a transcript that is absent from the source cache cannot be recovered by copying that cache.
Verify the migration on the destination
- Open the intended repository in a new Claude Code session.
- Run
/memoryand confirm the expected auto-memory files and notes are present. - Run
/contextand confirm the intended project and user instruction files loaded. - Check representative project-specific guidance and a relevant memory note, not just whether a directory exists.
- If preserving transcripts was part of your goal, confirm the expected transcript files are present and that the sessions you need can be resumed or consulted.
Successful loading confirms that the checked context is available in the new session; it does not prove that every conversation or artifact from the previous 15 months was copied.
