Anthropic documents running Claude Code in Windows through WSL or natively with Git Bash; reaching that environment from elsewhere requires a separately configured access method. OpenAI documents Codex Remote Control on Windows, an SSH connection to remote development machines in the Codex desktop app announced as alpha, and Codex Cloud, which runs tasks on OpenAI-managed computers.
Choose the setup that matches where your code should run
| What you want to do | Documented option | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Run Claude Code in a Windows 11 development environment | Use WSL or native Windows with Git Bash, as described in Anthropic’s setup guide. | Internet access, authentication, and the stated setup requirements apply. |
| Reach Codex running on a Windows device | Use Codex Remote Control, which OpenAI lists for Windows. | Workspace permissions and device discovery and control settings affect access. |
| Work in a separate development machine | Use the Codex desktop app’s SSH connection feature if it is available in your app. | OpenAI announced the feature as alpha on April 16, 2026; availability may vary. |
| Delegate a task to a hosted environment | Use Codex Cloud. | Tasks run on OpenAI-managed computers, not your Windows device. |
Run Claude Code on Windows 11
Choose WSL or native Windows
Anthropic’s setup guide lists Windows 10 and later with WSL 1, WSL 2, or Git for Windows. Its Windows instructions describe installing and running Claude Code within WSL, or running it on native Windows with Git Bash. Windows 11 falls within the guide’s stated Windows version range.

The guide lists Node.js 18 or later and at least 4 GB of RAM among the requirements. Claude Code also needs internet access for authentication and AI processing. Check the current setup guide for the exact installation steps and prerequisites.

Set up an authentication route
Anthropic documents authentication through Anthropic Console, a Claude account with an eligible Pro or Max plan, or enterprise platforms such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI. Which options you can use depends on your account and, for managed access, your organization. See Anthropic’s setup guide for current account and configuration details.

Understand what “remote” means for Claude Code
Claude Code runs in the environment where you start it: WSL or native Windows in this case. The documented Windows setup does not establish an Anthropic-provided remote-control service or a complete recipe for connecting to that Windows environment over a network. If you need to reach your own machine remotely, its access method must be configured separately; do not treat Claude Code installation as configuring SSH, Remote Desktop, or network access.
The CLI reference covers interactive sessions, print mode, resuming sessions, additional working directories, and permission modes. Those are command-line capabilities, not by themselves a remote-control service.

Use Codex remotely from Windows
Remote Control for a Windows device
OpenAI lists the ChatGPT desktop app in Codex mode, Codex CLI, IDE extension, and Codex web as Codex clients. Its Windows guidance says Codex includes Remote Control and lets you select a WSL distribution. Remote access remains subject to workspace permissions and the device’s discovery and control settings. Feature access can also depend on an organization-managed app build. Consult OpenAI’s Codex help page for current availability and requirements.
Connect the desktop app to another development machine
OpenAI announced that the Codex desktop app can connect to remote development machines over SSH in alpha on April 16, 2026. This option is for work whose project environment is on a separate development host, rather than the Windows device you are using. Because it was announced as an alpha feature and the announcement does not provide a complete Windows 11 connection tutorial, verify that your current app build and account expose it before relying on it. See OpenAI’s announcement.

Delegate work to Codex Cloud
Codex Cloud runs coding tasks on OpenAI-managed computers using reusable cloud environments. A task can continue while your computer sleeps because the work is running in that hosted environment. That is different from remotely accessing a task running on your own Windows device, where access depends on the device and its settings. OpenAI describes these distinctions in its Codex help page.

The documented capabilities do not establish a combined workflow that launches Claude Code and Codex together or synchronizes one session between them. Their remote options are separate: Claude Code’s documented Windows instructions cover its local runtime environments, while OpenAI’s Codex options include device Remote Control, an SSH connection to a separate development machine in alpha, and hosted cloud tasks.

Likewise, these product sources do not provide a full Windows 11 guide for configuring the machine itself as an SSH or Remote Desktop host. Use the current product and Windows documentation for the access method you choose, and distinguish clearly between a tool’s remote feature and the network access configured for your own computer.
