Then narrow the problem to creation, your own view, a shared viewer, or an attached file. An explicit Artifact error has a built-in diagnostic handoff; a blank or endlessly spinning panel does not have a documented universal fix.
First, check whether Artifacts are available on your account
Claude requires Code execution and file creation to be enabled for Artifacts. If you cannot create an Artifact or the feature is missing, check the setting before treating the problem as a rendering failure. Anthropic’s current instructions are in its Artifacts help article.
- Free, Pro, and Max: Open Settings > Capabilities and check the capability.
- Team and Enterprise: Check Organization settings > Capabilities. An organization policy may control whether you can change it yourself.
Artifacts can be created and shared on Claude web and desktop. Mobile apps support asking for and viewing designs, decks, and documents, but starting from a template, editing, and changing sharing settings are directed to web or desktop. If a control is missing in the mobile app, try the web or desktop interface first.
Identify where the failure happens
Before changing settings or rebuilding anything, classify the symptom. That makes it easier to distinguish an Artifact problem from a viewer permission or input-file issue.

Record the platform, Artifact type, exact error text, and whether another viewer can reproduce the problem. The official help pages do not provide a universal cause or browser-side remedy for every blank or indefinitely loading Artifact.
Use Claude’s error handoff when an error is shown
If an Artifact displays an error, look near it for Try fixing with Claude. Anthropic says: “If an artifact generates an error, look for the ‘Try fixing with Claude’ button near the error message. Click it to copy the error details into a new message, then send it to Claude to diagnose the issue and suggest a fix.” The handoff may help Claude diagnose the problem, but Anthropic does not guarantee that it will resolve every error.

- Click Try fixing with Claude beside the error.
- Review the new message containing the error details, then send it to Claude.
- If the handoff is unavailable or the problem remains, keep the error text and the reproduction details you recorded for a support request.
Check sign-in and permissions for shared Artifacts
Viewers of a shared Artifact need to sign in to a Claude account. On Team and Enterprise, an owner can disable external sharing; if so, an Anyone with the link share will not make the Artifact accessible externally. Check Anthropic’s sharing guidance or ask the organization owner whether the applicable sharing control allows access.
An Artifact may also include a section that relies on a connected app. That section uses the viewer’s own connections, so the Artifact can open while the connected-data portion fails for a viewer who lacks access to the underlying source. Treat another person’s public or shared Artifact like a file from an unknown sender: use caution before copying or running code.

Check file type, size, and PDF page range
Claude’s consumer upload rules are separate from the developer Files API. For Claude chat and project uploads, Anthropic lists the following document formats: PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON, and XLSX. XLSX requires Code execution and file creation to be enabled. Listed image formats are JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP. See the current Claude file-upload guidance for applicable limits.

These are different limits for different features. A chat attachment’s 500 MB allowance does not mean an Artifact can store a file of that size. Likewise, if a chart is embedded in a DOCX and absent from Claude’s interpretation, that may reflect document extraction behavior rather than a broken Artifact renderer.

When the Artifact is blank or keeps loading
If there is no visible error and the panel stays blank or spins, the official guidance reviewed does not establish a universal cause or a guaranteed fix. Avoid assuming the Artifact is corrupted or that a particular browser setting is responsible.
- Note whether the issue affects one Artifact or several, and whether it occurs on web, desktop, or mobile.
- Record whether the Artifact was created by you or shared with you, and whether it depends on a connected app or uploaded content.
- Capture the exact steps and any visible message. If a shared viewer is affected, ask whether the owner or another signed-in viewer can open it.
- Contact Claude support if you cannot reproduce a useful diagnostic handoff or the problem persists. Include the recorded details rather than guessing at a cause.
Keep API Files errors separate from Claude app uploads
Anthropic’s Files API documentation describes a developer workflow, not consumer Claude chat or project uploads. In that API, uploaded files are workspace-scoped and cannot be downloaded through the API; files created by skills or the code-execution tool can be downloadable. API errors can also involve a missing or inaccessible file ID, or a mismatch between a file’s type and the content block using it. Apply those details only when diagnosing an API integration, not when troubleshooting a file uploaded in Claude’s consumer interface.
