Validate classified-ad photos at four separate points: when they arrive, while they are parsed or transformed, when they are stored, and when they are served. A filename extension or browser-supplied content type is only a claim; the server must check the file itself, constrain the work required to process it, keep it away from executable application paths, and control how it is retrieved.
This four-boundary model is a practical framework synthesized from OWASP guidance, not a named OWASP standard. It applies to marketplace engineering generally; the precise limits and policies depend on the service and its requirements.

1. Intake: decide what the feature will accept
Start with a narrow allowlist of image formats the listing feature actually needs, plus an upload-size limit. Enforce both on the server. Browser-side checks can improve feedback, but they are not a security control: a client can be modified or bypassed.

Content-Typeas untrusted metadata. An allowed extension or a browser’s content-type claim does not establish what the file contains. - Decode filenames appropriately before applying extension rules, and use established parsing or content-validation methods rather than ad hoc regular expressions. OWASP’s Input Validation Cheat Sheet describes validation as a defense that should be applied at the server-side trust boundary.
- Require authentication and authorization appropriate to the action: creating a listing, changing its photos, or managing photos should not be open to an arbitrary uploader.
- Limit request size and per-user activity to reduce storage exhaustion and abuse.
OWASP cautions that “There is no silver bullet in validating user content.” An extension check, MIME-type check, or other single test should not be treated as proof of safety; combine checks that address different failure modes. See the OWASP File Upload Cheat Sheet.

2. Parsing and transformation: limit resource use
Even a file that fits the upload-size limit can demand substantial resources when decoded. Process uploads with maintained image libraries, handle malformed-file errors, and set limits for both input bytes and decoded dimensions. OWASP ASVS 5.0 V5 calls for rejecting images above the permitted pixel size as a defense against pixel-flood attacks; choose a limit that fits the product rather than assuming one universal threshold.
- Check that the bytes correspond to an accepted format. Signature or magic-byte checks can contribute, but they are one signal in a defense-in-depth design, not a complete validation strategy.
- Consider decoding and re-encoding accepted images into a normalized output format. This can reduce the chance that unwanted injected data survives, but rewriting is not a guarantee that an image is safe.
- Keep image-processing dependencies configured securely and updated. Where the architecture permits, isolate the parser from high-privilege application functions so a parsing flaw has a smaller potential impact.
- If you use malware scanning or an external scanning service, assess whether sending private or unpublished listing photos to that service could expose user data.
The OWASP ASVS 5.0 file-handling requirements provide a security-verification reference for file processing. They do not prescribe a particular image library or a single set of limits for every marketplace.

3. Storage and access control: separate files from user identity
After validation, assign each stored image an identifier generated by the application. Do not turn a submitted filename into a filesystem path or use it as the authority for where an object is saved. Keep uploaded content outside the webroot with least-privilege filesystem access, or use a separate host for uploaded files where practical.
Model the image’s lifecycle explicitly. States such as pending, approved, rejected, and deleted can help distinguish an upload awaiting review from one available to the public; these are useful implementation choices, not state names required by OWASP. Enforce authorization for listing owners and for administrative or moderation actions at every transition.

- Define deletion and retention according to the operator’s policy and applicable jurisdiction. The cited guidance does not establish a universal retention period.
- Keep storage permissions and credentials limited to the operations the application needs.

4. Retrieval: serve only the intended image
Acceptance is not the final security check. When a client requests a photo, map an application-controlled identifier to the stored object; do not accept a user-controlled path. Serve the validated output with an appropriate image content type and ensure direct requests cannot cause the uploaded file to execute as server-side code.

- Keep serving behavior consistent with the format and output produced during validation and transformation.
- Where practical, separate the upload or storage host from the application host to reduce the impact of content-handling risks.
- For public listings, provide an abuse-reporting route and a moderation process where appropriate. Automated checks can support review, but they do not replace it or establish that content is lawful.
How to apply the four boundaries
Set policy and test behavior at each transition, rather than treating “upload succeeded” as the end of validation. OWASP’s ASVS 5.0 file-handling section and File Upload Cheat Sheet are useful references for translating the lifecycle into security requirements.
- At intake: define allowed formats and byte limits, then verify that server-side checks reject disallowed or malformed inputs and enforce the intended user’s permissions.
- During processing: verify that parsers enforce byte and decoded-dimension limits, fail safely on parse errors, and run with appropriately constrained privileges.
- At storage: confirm that application-generated identifiers are used, user filenames cannot select paths, quotas apply, and lifecycle permissions are enforced.
- At retrieval: confirm that only intended images are exposed, content types match validated output, and uploaded content cannot execute as server-side code.
When choosing implementation details, assess format coverage and validation strength, maximum bytes and decoded dimensions, parser and storage isolation, access-control and moderation needs, and delivery and retention requirements. The OWASP references cited here establish security practices, not a vendor ranking, a particular service choice, or a universal policy for every marketplace.
