Windows 10’s Settings app doesn’t offer a one-click switch back to the original Windows Classic interface. What you can do is build a classic-inspired desktop (restrained colors, a plain background, a consistent light or dark look) using the built-in Settings > Personalization pages, then save it as a theme you can reapply. This guide walks through that process.
What “classic theme” can mean
People use the phrase two ways. Some want a traditional, uncluttered look. Others want the specific legacy Windows Classic visual style from the pre-XP era. Microsoft’s user-facing instructions cover the first: applying and customizing themes, backgrounds, colors, sounds and cursors. Microsoft’s technical Theme File Format reference does mention Windows Classic, but only as a possible base when a theme file’s color values override defaults (alongside Windows 7 Basic and High Contrast). That is developer documentation. It doesn’t show that ordinary Windows 10 settings can restore the full legacy interface, so this guide doesn’t promise that.

Step 1: Start from Themes
Microsoft defines a theme as “a combination of desktop background pictures, window colors, sounds, and other elements that allow you to personalize your Windows experience.” The Microsoft Support theme page covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

- Apply one of the built-in themes, or choose the option to browse themes in the Microsoft Store.
- Use the result as a base for the next steps.
I can’t vouch for third-party theme packs from outside the Store. Their compatibility, safety and upkeep aren’t covered by Microsoft’s documentation, so stick to built-in and Store themes if you want a low-risk setup.

Step 2: Pick a restrained background
Go to Personalization > Background. According to Microsoft’s desktop background guide, the choices are a picture, a solid color, a slideshow, or Windows Spotlight.

For a picture or slideshow, use the fit selector to choose how the image fills the screen.

Step 3: Set colors
Open Personalization > Colors. Per Microsoft’s colors page, you can choose light, dark or custom mode. The accent color can be picked manually or taken automatically from your background. The option to show the accent on the taskbar and Start is available in dark or custom mode.
- Muted, traditional look: pick light mode (or custom) and choose a manual accent in a subdued tone, such as a navy or gray-blue, rather than automatic selection.
- Consistent look: some apps manage their own theme setting, so they may not follow your choice. Check the ones you use most and adjust them individually.
Step 4: Check readability
If ordinary colors are hard to tell apart, Windows has contrast themes and color filters under the accessibility settings (see Change color contrast in Windows). These are readability tools, not style presets. Microsoft’s Contrast themes documentation says they “use a constrained color palette (with contrast ratios typically at or above 7:1) to improve legibility, reduce visual fatigue, and support users who rely on high visual separation between foreground and background content.” That is general guidance, not a measured promise for every app, so check the result in the programs you use.
Step 5: Save and share your theme
- Return to Settings > Personalization > Themes. Your customized arrangement appears as a saved theme; save it under a name you’ll remember.
- To reapply it later, select it from the list.
- To move it to another PC, right-click the saved theme and choose Save theme for sharing. This creates a
.deskthemepackfile.
A note on Windows 10 support
Microsoft’s support pages state that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes are no longer provided, though the PC keeps working.
