What is ClamAV?
ClamAV is open-source software licensed under GNU GPL version 2. Its project describes it as a toolkit designed especially for email scanning on mail gateways. The documentation is explicit: “ClamAV is not a traditional anti-virus or endpoint security suite.” That distinction matters: ClamAV supplies scanning components that administrators can configure and integrate, rather than a complete endpoint-protection package. Scanning depends on virus database files. FreshClam downloads and updates the official signature databases; the official CVD signature collection is maintained by Cisco Talos and distributed in digitally signed containers. ClamAV signature guide

ClamAV’s usage guidance positions clamscan for simple scans that need minimal setup. For recurring or integrated scanning, clamd runs as a daemon and can accept requests from clients such as clamdscan, clamonacc, and mail-filtering integrations. ClamAV usage documentation

How to install ClamAV
Available installation routes include operating-system package managers, ClamAV installers, official Docker images, and source builds. The right route depends on the operating system and deployment. Package defaults and setup steps differ; some installations require configuring freshclam.conf and clamd.conf, a service user, and database-directory permissions. Supported systems and tested versions change. Check ClamAV’s live platform list and the package version offered for your distribution rather than assuming every release or operating system is supported. The functionality table lists ClamAV 1.5.4 and 1.4.6 as August 2026 critical-bug-fix releases; those version details can become outdated. How to update ClamAV virus definitions
Use FreshClam to download and update the official signature databases. It needs a working configuration file, and its service account must have permission to update the database directory. If updates fail, check the configuration path and the ownership and permissions of that directory against the defaults for your installation source. For a one-time scan, use clamscan with the file or directory you want to check. The exact command options and reporting behavior are documented in the usage guide; consult it for the desired scan scope and output. Because the engine requires installed virus database files, ensure FreshClam has populated or updated the database before scanning. ClamAV usage documentation

If an application needs to request scans repeatedly, configure clamd and use a compatible client such as clamdscan. This approach adds daemon configuration and service management, so it is a different operational choice from launching a single clamscan process.
Is ClamAV real-time antivirus?
Not in the broad sense implied by a full endpoint-security suite. ClamAV documents Linux on-access scanning through ClamOnAcc on modern Linux systems. That is a platform-specific capability requiring its supported configuration; it does not make ordinary clamscan a continuously running scanner or establish universal real-time protection. Secure the daemon and its signature configuration
Keep the TCP socket private
The clamd TCP socket does not authenticate clients. A host that can reach it can send commands, so do not expose it to the public Internet. Prefer a local Unix socket where suitable, or tightly restrict network access to trusted systems. ClamAV usage documentation
Be cautious with third-party bytecode
ClamAV does not run unsigned bytecode by default. The project’s community guidance warns that bytecode signatures effectively act as executable plugins and have less sandboxing than WebAssembly. Do not enable third-party bytecode casually; use only sources and configurations you have reason to trust. ClamAV signature guide
