Choose Cities: Skylines if you want its established Steam Workshop ecosystem, extensive accumulated add-ons, or a game with less demanding published PC requirements. Choose Cities: Skylines II if you want newer simulation systems, a much larger build area, climate and seasonal variation, and current PC content—and your computer can handle it. There is no universal winner: the better choice depends on your hardware, platform, and priorities.

What is the practical difference?

The original is the established option, with a mature city-building experience and a long-running catalog of Steam Workshop creations and add-ons. The sequel expands the simulation and build scale, but brings higher published PC requirements and uses a different mod ecosystem. These are differences in features and availability, not proof that one game is objectively better to play.

Paradox described Cities: Skylines II as having a map five times larger than the original in its October 24, 2023 launch announcement. That is a publisher-stated scale comparison, not an assessment of how much usable or enjoyable building space every player will get. Paradox’s PC launch announcement

Which one should you play?

Pick Cities: Skylines if Workshop access is a priority

The original has an established Steam Workshop route for importing, sharing, and downloading player-created work, as well as a large accumulated add-on catalog. That makes it the more straightforward choice if your idea of the game includes browsing community creations and building on years of existing content. The available sources establish different mod systems, not which has more mods or which produces better ones.

Pick Cities: Skylines II for its newer simulation features

The sequel is the fit if you are most interested in the publisher-described lifepaths, economy, road and traffic systems, progression, climate, and seasonal variation. It also offers a larger build area according to Paradox’s launch announcement. Those are feature descriptions; they do not establish that the sequel’s systems are more polished or more enjoyable for every player.

These are published requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or smooth performance on every system. Paradox calls the game performance-heavy and provides a guide to settings adjustments; consult it if you already own the game or are checking how to tune it: Paradox’s performance optimization guide, updated August 4, 2026.

Console-first players should not assume the sequel is ready

Paradox’s current console status page says the team needs more time for performance and stability work, and does not give a firm launch date. It also says the game will not release “before summer,” but does not specify a year for that wording, so it should not be read as a dated release promise. For console availability, check the official status page rather than relying on an inferred date.

Are player ratings a useful tiebreaker?

Steam’s storefront snapshots accessed October 7, 2026 showed Cities: Skylines at 92% positive from 100,665 English-language reviews overall and 88% positive from 344 recent reviews. The sequel showed 57% positive from 34,380 English-language reviews overall and 73% positive from 790 recent reviews. These percentages can change, reflect different review pools and time periods, and do not explain why people rated either game as they did. Treat them as dated storefront context, not a controlled quality comparison or a permanent verdict. See the current listings for the original and the sequel.

Verdict: which city builder should you play?

Start with Cities: Skylines if you value Workshop creations, accumulated add-ons, or lower published PC requirements. Start with Cities: Skylines II if its newer simulation systems, larger build scale, seasons, and current PC content are the draw—and your hardware is up to the published requirements. If you play on console, base the decision on the games actually available for your platform rather than an unannounced sequel date.
