The steps differ by game: Cities: Skylines II has built-in traffic and road infoviews, while the original game can use optional traffic-control mods such as TM:PE. Neither a single road layout nor a new transit line is guaranteed to fix every city.
1. Find the source of the queue
Start by looking for the point where vehicles stop or slow down, not simply the road segment where the queue is longest. Trace the line of backed-up traffic toward its head: the constraint may be a junction, a merge, a blocked turn, or an access point downstream. Changing a nearby road that is not causing the bottleneck can shift the queue without relieving it.

In Cities: Skylines II
Open the traffic infoview to see traffic flow and volume across the city; red roads mark traffic jams. Then use the road infoview for more detail on an individual road. Paradox Interactive described these tools in its June 26, 2023 traffic AI article.

In the original Cities: Skylines
Use the available traffic view and follow the vehicles through the affected area to locate where movement breaks down. The infoview details described by Paradox above are specifically for Cities: Skylines II; do not assume its interface or behavior applies to the original game.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-tiered simulation: Playing as the mayor of your city you’ll be faced with balancing essential requirements such as education, water electricity, police, fire fighting, healthcare and much more along with your citys real economy system.
- Extensive local traffic simulation: Colossal Orders extensive experience developing the Cities in Motion series is fully utilized in a fully fleshed out and well-crafted transport systems.
- Districts and Policies: Be more than just an administrator from city hall. Designating parts of your city as a district results in the application of policies which results in you rising to the status of Mayor for your own city.
- Extensive modding support: Build or improve on existing maps and structures. You can then import them into the game, share them as well as download the creations of other city builders on the Steam workshop.
2. Make one local road change, then check again
Once you have found the queue’s starting point, adjust the constraint rather than rebuilding the whole district. Depending on what you see, that may mean changing a junction or merge, improving access to the destination, or addressing a blocked movement. After the change, inspect the same area again and see whether the queue has shortened, moved, or remained in place. If it moved, the new queue location can reveal the next constraint.
3. Account for Cities: Skylines II lane behavior
In its feature description of Cities: Skylines II, Paradox says vehicles use multiple lanes, may overtake when other lanes are less used, and can switch away from lanes blocked by incidents or queues. That means a busy-looking lane does not by itself prove that the road needs more lanes. Check where vehicles concentrate, whether the required turn or destination is constrained, and whether the road after the junction can carry the traffic arriving there.

- Deep Simulation: Make choices that have ripple effects across the city. Intricate AI and economic systems mean players will need to strategize, problem solve and react to changes, challenges and opportunities.
- Epic Scale, Endless Possibilities: Build a thriving metropolis without compromise. In Cities: Skylines II, players will be able to build sky-high and across the map to realize their dream city like never before.
- Cities That Come Alive: Follow the lives of individual citizens, from love and loss to wealth and well-being. Player decisions will shape the lives of their city’s citizens.
- A Dynamic World: Pick a map to set the climate and biome of the city. These natural forces will shape the growth of players’ cities as they contend with rising pollution, changeable weather and seasonal challenges.
Paradox’s later City Corner #7 patch article describes changes to pathing and earlier lane merges, while noting that the changes would not resolve every traffic-behavior issue. A patch can improve routing without making every bottleneck disappear, so diagnose the specific queue in your city rather than relying on a general promise of a fix.
4. Use transit as part of a wider response
If many trips depend on cars, transit is one way to offer another option. The original game’s Mass Transit expansion adds public transport services, passenger-transfer hubs, and road types. Consider whether a service or connection suits the trips and destinations in your city; adding a line alone does not guarantee that a particular road queue will go away.

5. Optional traffic controls for the original game
Players of the original Cities: Skylines can consider TM:PE, an optional mod that provides additional road and rail controls. Its documentation covers traffic policies and gameplay settings. This is a mod-specific option, not a built-in feature that should be assumed available on every platform, and it is not guidance for Cities: Skylines II. Check the mod’s current compatibility and settings for your game version before installing or changing controls.
