The leading alternatives to evaluate are Fortinet Secure SD-WAN, HPE Aruba Networking EdgeConnect, Arista VeloCloud, and Palo Alto Networks SD-WAN options. None is a like-for-like replacement by name alone: compare each complete solution against your routing, branch security, application steering, deployment, and operating requirements. Cisco’s October 2025 comparison is a useful vendor-authored starting point, not an independent ranking.
First, clarify what you are replacing
Cisco now calls vManage Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager. Cisco’s product page uses the phrase “formerly vManage,” and its solution overview, updated July 6, 2026, describes the Manager as the centralized management system for Cisco’s SD-WAN fabric.

The Manager is the management component, not the whole SD-WAN system. In Cisco’s architecture, the Manager provides operational visibility, device provisioning and configuration, license management, and software upgrades. Controllers distribute control-plane route and policy information; edge devices forward traffic. The fabric uses an encrypted overlay across transports such as MPLS, broadband, cellular, and cloud connectivity, with centrally configured policies directing application traffic.
That distinction matters when shortlisting competitors: decide whether you want a different management console, a new SD-WAN fabric, a branch security platform, or a combined redesign. The alternatives below are broader product approaches, not simply four interchangeable management applications.
How the main alternatives differ
The descriptions below reflect Cisco’s October 2025 vendor-authored comparison chart, which Cisco says is based on public information. Treat its classifications as leads to verify with each vendor, not as independently tested findings.
| Option | Cisco chart’s characterization | Why it may merit evaluation | What to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fortinet Secure SD-WAN | Threat-centric; associates SD-WAN with FortiGate NGFW capabilities including IPS/IDS, SSL inspection, application control, and URL filtering, with FortiManager/FortiAnalyzer integration. | A plausible first candidate when consolidating branch firewall and SD-WAN functions is a priority. | Confirm which security services are included in the proposed architecture and licenses, where they run, and how management and analytics fit your existing Fortinet estate. |
| HPE Aruba Networking EdgeConnect | Connectivity-centric; highlights path optimization and newer firewall and antivirus capabilities. | Worth considering when WAN connectivity and path optimization are central to the evaluation. | Validate that the security functions, routing, segmentation, and management model meet your requirements; the chart alone does not establish their depth for your use case. |
| Arista VeloCloud | Connectivity-centric; lists dynamic application path selection and network anomaly detection. | A candidate to assess for application-aware connectivity and anomaly visibility. | Check routing flexibility, security integration, operational fit, and current product packaging against your actual design. |
| Palo Alto Networks SD-WAN options | Distinguishes firewall-oriented PAN-OS options from ION devices oriented toward SD-WAN connectivity, and mentions Prisma Access SSE. | May fit organizations evaluating SD-WAN alongside Palo Alto firewall or SSE capabilities. | Define the specific architecture in scope—PAN-OS, ION, Prisma Access, or a combination—and confirm the management console, licenses, and responsibilities for that combination. |
The same Cisco chart lists dynamic application path selection for all four alternatives as well as Cisco. That feature label alone therefore does not distinguish them. The meaningful comparison is how each solution measures link and application conditions, lets operators express steering policy, exposes telemetry, and integrates with the security and routing design you intend to run.

Choose by requirements, not by a universal ranking
Branch security and firewall estate
If the project is partly a branch-firewall consolidation, investigate Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks early, while verifying the exact product combination and security services in scope. If connectivity and path optimization lead, EdgeConnect and VeloCloud also belong on the shortlist. These are starting points suggested by Cisco’s chart; validate the functions and operational boundaries directly with each vendor.
Routing, segmentation, and migration
Document the routing protocols and existing WAN design that must continue to work, the segmentation model you need, and the scale at which it must operate. Then test whether a candidate can preserve the required routing behavior and policies during a staged migration. Cisco’s comparison describes differences in traditional routing support and segmentation, but does not establish how any option will behave in your environment.
Cloud connectivity and SASE direction
Map the cloud and SSE/SASE services your network must reach, and identify where inspection and policy enforcement should occur. Ask whether integrations are native, separately licensed, or third-party, and whether the proposed design needs a separate security console. Cisco’s chart mentions single-vendor SASE positioning and Prisma Access SSE; those references are not a substitute for confirming current product scope and integration details.
Deployment and day-to-day ownership
Establish whether the management and control components must be vendor-hosted, customer-managed on premises, customer-managed in a public cloud, or split across models. Cisco documents three patterns for its own control components: Cisco cloud-hosted, self-managed on premises, and self-managed in a public cloud such as AWS or Azure. Cisco says hosting reduces infrastructure operating burden, while self-management gives the customer more control and makes the customer responsible for deployment, operations, monitoring, maintenance, server capacity, and scaling. Do not assume competitors offer the same choices or divide responsibilities in the same way.

People, installed equipment, and lifecycle
Include existing branch hardware, security management tools, network skills, support arrangements, and hardware lifecycle in the decision. A technically suitable fabric can still create unnecessary operational change if it requires new expertise or splits work across unfamiliar tools. Ask each vendor to map the proposed design to your installed estate and state what would need replacement, retraining, or parallel operation.

Run a proof of concept that reflects production
Use the same sites, traffic classes, policy goals, and failure scenarios for every candidate. A controlled comparison is more useful than a feature checklist because it reveals what operators will actually configure and monitor.
- Write down acceptance criteria. Specify required transports, routing behavior, segmentation, security services, cloud destinations, management access, and operational ownership before selecting test cases.
- Test application steering. Use representative applications and link conditions. Inspect the telemetry used for decisions, the policy controls available to administrators, and what happens when a preferred path degrades or recovers.
- Exercise branch security. Verify the firewall, intrusion prevention, URL controls, encrypted-traffic inspection, and enforcement locations required by your policy. Confirm which components, subscriptions, and consoles are necessary.
- Model migration and failure. Test routing and segmentation alongside a branch rollout, transport loss, and return to normal operation. Check how policy changes are staged, observed, and rolled back.
- Test the management workflow. Have the operations team provision a site, change a policy, inspect an incident, and handle a software or configuration change using the intended deployment model.
- Compare the complete offer. Obtain dated vendor documentation for architecture, licensing, support, and deployment responsibilities. Compare total operating requirements as well as proposed hardware and subscriptions; no comparable current pricing or licensing figures are established here.
What the available comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Cisco’s October 2025 chart is vendor-authored and based on public information. It can help identify feature areas and candidate products, but it does not provide an independent benchmark of performance, price, reliability, or ease of operation. Nor does it establish current licensing, every vendor’s deployment choices, or suitability for a particular site count and traffic profile. For procurement, verify material claims in dated vendor documentation and use a proof of concept with identical requirements.
