CISA’s 2023–2024 Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence is an agency strategy for using AI to support cybersecurity and critical-infrastructure work, protecting AI systems from cyber threats, and addressing malicious uses of AI. The official sources available here include the roadmap and its launch announcement, but do not establish whether CISA has a separate FAQ page devoted to the roadmap.

What is CISA’s AI roadmap?

The 2023–2024 CISA Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence sets out how the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency planned to approach AI in support of its mission. It places the agency at the intersection of AI, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure, and aligns its work with the broader federal AI strategy. CISA announced the roadmap on November 14, 2023, in a release describing its goals.

The roadmap is an agency strategy document, not a consumer guide or a recommendation to buy a particular AI product. Its focus is CISA’s own work and its support for public- and private-sector stakeholders.

What are the five lines of effort in CISA’s AI roadmap?

The roadmap organizes CISA’s planned work into five lines of effort:

  1. Responsibly use AI to support CISA’s mission. Apply AI in ways that help the agency carry out its work.
  2. Assure AI systems. Help make AI systems more secure and resilient, including through secure-by-design adoption, development and implementation guidance, and recommendations for generative AI red-teaming.
  3. Protect critical infrastructure from malicious AI use. Address threats that involve AI capabilities and could affect essential infrastructure.
  4. Collaborate with partners. Work with interagency, international, and public partners on AI-related challenges.
  5. Expand AI expertise in the workforce. Build the knowledge and skills CISA needs to carry out its AI-related work.

How does the roadmap define secure-by-design?

The roadmap says AI manufacturers should take ownership of security outcomes for customers, lead product development with transparency and accountability, and make secure-by-design a business priority. This is a security principle within CISA’s strategy, not a certification or a guarantee that a particular AI system is secure.

Does CISA have FAQs about its AI roadmap?

The official materials identified for this article include the roadmap PDF and CISA’s launch release; they do not establish that a separate FAQ page specifically about the roadmap exists. For the roadmap’s framework and wording, consult the official PDF. For its announcement and publication context, see CISA’s November 14, 2023 release.

What does the 2023–2024 label mean?

“2023–2024” is the period stated in the roadmap’s title. It does not by itself show that every activity ended in 2024 or that this remains CISA’s current AI plan in 2026. The sources cited here do not establish the present status of each initiative.
