Circuit bending is the experimental practice of modifying an existing electronic device’s circuitry to alter or control its sounds. It can turn a toy or keyboard into an unusual instrument, but results vary: a technique that changes one device may do nothing—or behave differently—on another. If you try it, work only with battery-powered devices, never equipment that plugs into a wall outlet.
What is circuit bending?
Circuit bending is a form of experimental electronic instrument-making. A circuit bender explores the circuitry in an existing sound-producing device and makes changes intended to produce new sounds or controls. The appeal is partly the discovery: sounds can be strange, surprising, and difficult to predict in advance.

It is not a standardized modification with guaranteed results. Devices differ, and a bend found in one unit is not proof that the same change will work in another. Circuit bending is best understood as exploratory sound design, not a predictable upgrade to a toy.

Where did circuit bending come from?
The practice is associated with Reed Ghazala, whose experiments began after an accidental encounter with a toy amplifier in the late 1960s. His writing and advocacy in the 1990s helped give the practice the name “circuit bending” and introduce it to a wider audience. In a companion chapter to Handmade Electronic Music, Nicolas Collins describes that shift: “Then in the mid-1990s Reed Ghazala pushed serendipity back to the fore of electronic practice with his fervent advocacy of what he dubbed ‘circuit bending.’”

What devices can be circuit bent?
Sound-producing toys, keyboards, and other found electronic devices are common source categories. The Science Museum Group Journal’s account of circuit bending cites toys such as Speak & Spell and Furby as examples used by practitioners. Those are historical examples, not recommendations: they do not establish that every unit, revision, or currently available toy is suitable or has a reliable modification.
There is no universal starter device in the available guidance. A device’s suitability and the effects of any modification depend on its particular circuitry, so avoid assuming that a tutorial for one model applies to another.

How do you circuit bend a toy?
There is no single procedure that works across all toys. Nicolas Collins’s tutorial for locating a toy’s clock circuit is one specific exploratory exercise, not a general modification recipe or a guarantee of a useful result. It names these items for that exercise:
- A sound-making toy
- Small screwdrivers
- A fine-tip permanent marker
- Optional: two alligator-clip test leads and a 1–4 kΩ resistor
The tool list is specific to the tutorial; it is not a complete kit or a substitute for knowing the device and the risks. Do not treat a technique, tool, or bend point described for one device as validated for a different one.

Is circuit bending safe?
Only experiment with battery-powered devices. The T.A.C.O. Team’s Toy Hacking Handbook page, in its February 2015 edition, warns: “Only experiment with devices that are battery powered. You can seriously hurt yourself if you modify things that plug into a wall outlet.” Do not open or modify equipment that plugs into a wall outlet.
This is a high-level boundary, not a complete electrical safety standard or device-specific inspection guide. The cited guidance does not establish that every battery-powered device is safe to modify; it says to stay away from mains-powered equipment.

Where can you learn more?
For a topic-specific introduction, Reed Ghazala’s Circuit-Bending: Build Your Own Alien Instruments was published by Wiley on August 26, 2005. Its Google Books bibliographic listing describes tools, a workshop, and practical bending techniques. Because the book dates to 2005, check its current edition and availability rather than assuming either.
