Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSquare Free is a strong place to start if you want POS software with no monthly subscription fee. It is not cost-free to operate: payment processing fees apply, and hardware or optional add-ons can add expense. The right system depends on your payment channels, checkout setup, inventory and staff needs, and whether you sell online or serve diners. This comparison is US-focused, based on vendor pricing reviewed September 30, 2026; confirm current prices and terms before signing up.
What counts as a free POS system?
“Free” usually describes the software subscription, not the full cost of accepting payments. A $0 monthly plan can still charge transaction fees, and a business may also need compatible equipment or paid features. Compare the recurring software charge separately from payment processing, hardware, implementation, and upgrades.

Square says its Free plan has no monthly subscription cost, while processing fees apply when you take payments. Its US pricing FAQ says, “You do not need to purchase hardware to take payments with Square,” naming invoices, payment links, virtual terminal, and Tap to Pay as hardware-free options. That does not mean every physical checkout can operate without a reader or terminal.

Square Free: the clearest no-monthly-subscription starting point
Square is the most clearly documented option here for a $0 monthly POS software subscription. Its published rates in a December 19, 2025 US article differ by payment channel: 2.6% + 15¢ for in-person payments, 3.5% + 15¢ for manually entered card payments, and 2.9% + 30¢ for online store payments. These are Square-published standard rates, not a claim that Square is the cheapest provider; check current rates and eligibility before relying on them.

Channel matters because a business that takes most payments online or enters card details manually may incur a different processing cost from one that mostly accepts in-person card payments. Square’s pricing page lists hardware options starting at $59, while its FAQ also describes payment methods that do not require hardware. Budget around the actual checkout method you will use, rather than assuming all in-person sales can be handled with a phone or without a reader.
Square reported serving more than 4 million merchants in its December 19, 2025 article. That is Square’s own usage claim, not independently verified market-share data, and it does not establish that the system is right for a particular business.

When a paid POS comparison makes more sense
Shopify POS for businesses considering Shopify
Shopify can be relevant if you are evaluating its ecommerce platform and want in-person selling in the same ecosystem. Its US pricing page lists Basic at $39 per month, with POS Pro adding $89 per month for each location. Treat it as a paid comparison or upgrade path, not as a free POS subscription. Check the current plan and location pricing on Shopify’s page.

Toast is a restaurant-focused option to compare, but the available pricing information does not establish a universally free plan. Toast says hardware and implementation costs vary, and its services are limited to approved compatible devices; it also says support is included in software subscriptions. Ask which current package applies to your restaurant and obtain the associated device, implementation, and subscription terms before choosing.

Loyverse and other names to verify
Loyverse, Helcim, SpotOn, Odoo, and PayPal POS appear in an independent 2026 comparison of POS options. That is useful for generating candidates, but it does not settle current feature limits, fees, or eligibility. Consult each vendor’s official plan and pricing information before treating any option as free or comparing its total cost.
How to compare systems for your business
- Define the checkout flow. List where sales happen: staffed counter, mobile checkout, online store, invoices, or keyed payments. Match the fees and hardware requirements to those channels.
- Price the complete setup. Separate monthly software costs from payment processing, equipment, implementation, and paid add-ons. Include every location if a plan charges per location.
- Check essential features. Compare inventory, reporting, staff access, ecommerce, and restaurant-specific workflows against what you actually need. Do not pay for an upgrade solely because a feature is advertised; confirm whether it solves an operational requirement.
- Confirm hardware and compatibility. Identify required readers, terminals, tablets, scanners, and supported devices. For accessories such as a barcode scanner, confirm compatibility with the POS, tablet, and operating system before purchasing.
- Consider the cost of changing later. Check which features require an upgrade and what data or workflows may need to move if you outgrow the plan. A low entry price is less useful if the required tools arrive only in a higher-cost tier.
- Verify current terms directly. Prices and packages can change, and availability varies by country. The figures above are US vendor pricing reviewed September 30, 2026, except Square’s transaction rates, which are from its December 19, 2025 article.
Which system should you start with?
Start with Square Free if avoiding a monthly POS software subscription is the priority and its checkout flow, processing rates, and available hardware suit your business. Compare Shopify if you are already evaluating Shopify and can justify the paid plan and per-location POS Pro cost. Restaurants should examine the exact Toast package and hardware terms rather than assume it is free. If you shortlist other providers, verify their current limits and pricing on official vendor pages before deciding.
