Yes—Google removed the Google Lens button from the Circle to Search toolbar in a server-side Google app update reported on October 11–12, 2024. Circle to Search itself was not removed. You can still select text or images on your screen and search them without leaving the current app, but the former one-tap route from that toolbar into live Google Lens is gone.
What changed in Circle to Search
Before the rollout, the Circle to Search bar exposed controls for Google Search, voice search, Google Lens, song search and translation. Reports from 9to5Google and Android Authority said the Lens icon disappeared after song lookup was added, with the change appearing across stable and beta Google app versions through a server-side rollout.

Google did not publish a reason for removing the shortcut. It also has not announced a restoration date. The reports describe the interface change, but provide no user-count, rollout-percentage or performance statistic.
What still works
Circle to Search continues to search content that is already visible on your display. On a supported Android phone, hold the Home button or navigation handle, then use one of these gestures:

- Tap an item to identify it.
- Highlight text for a web search or other action.
- Use instant translation on supported content.
Results appear in the lower half of the screen, so you do not have to switch apps. Google also documents AI Overviews for some text and multisearch queries. Its feature descriptions include identifying objects and products, finding shopping results, looking up restaurants and translating what appears on screen.
Newer actions recognized by Circle to Search
In a January 22, 2025 announcement, Google said Circle to Search had expanded visual AI Overviews and could recognize phone numbers, email addresses and URLs for one-tap actions. Those additions do not bring back the Lens icon; they extend what Circle to Search can do with selected on-screen content.

How to use Google Lens now
The missing control was only an entry point. Google Lens remains available through separate paths:

Use the Google Search widget
- Place the Google Search widget on your Android home screen if it is not already there.
- Tap the Lens icon in the widget.
- Point the camera at an object or select an image, then review the Lens results.
Open the standalone Google Lens app
- Install or locate the Google Lens app from your app drawer.
- Open Lens directly instead of launching Circle to Search first.
- Use the camera or choose an existing image for visual search.
These workarounds restore direct access to Lens, but neither restores the old Lens button inside the Circle to Search bar.

Which phones support Circle to Search?
Availability is device-gated rather than universal across Android. Google lists Pixel 6 and later among supported phones, while its product information describes the feature as available on select premium Android smartphones in supported languages and locations. Eligibility can differ by model, manufacturer, country and software version, so check your phone’s current Google and manufacturer support information before assuming it is included.

- Set Google as the phone’s default digital assistant.
- Allow screen or app data use for the feature.
- Update the Google app.
- Confirm that the phone model, language and region are eligible.
After changing a setting, try holding the Home button or navigation handle again. If the feature is still absent, the limitation may be device or regional eligibility rather than the missing Lens shortcut.
What the update means in practice
If you used Lens to identify something currently on your screen, Circle to Search still covers much of that task: select the item and search it in place. If you wanted Lens’s dedicated camera interface or image-import workflow, open Lens from the Search widget or its app instead. The update changes where you start visual search, not whether Google Lens exists.
