The OnePlus 8 Pro’s 5MP Color Filter camera was unusually sensitive to near-infrared light. In the phone’s original Photochrom mode, that sensitivity could reveal parts inside some thin, infrared-transparent plastic housings, creating an X-ray-like effect. Metal, dense coverings and human tissue remained opaque, and software updates later restricted the original behavior.
What created the OnePlus 8 Pro “X-ray” effect?
The hardware was a dedicated 5MP Color Filter camera, mounted as the fourth rear camera alongside the main, ultrawide and telephoto cameras. Its unusual near-infrared sensitivity was combined with the native Photochrom camera mode. DPReview described the camera on May 14, 2020, when demonstrations showed it recording details that ordinary phone cameras could not.
In practical terms, the OnePlus 8 Pro could sometimes show internal components behind a thin plastic shell. That is why searches for “OnePlus 8 Pro X-ray vision,” “see through plastic” and “Photochrom filter” describe the phone as if it had an X-ray camera. “X-ray” is only a visual analogy.
Why some plastic looked transparent
Visible light and near-infrared light occupy different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. A plastic can look black or opaque to your eyes while transmitting some near-infrared wavelengths. The Color Filter camera could capture that transmitted light, allowing shapes behind the plastic to appear in the resulting image.

Users reported the strongest results with thin housings such as television remotes, computer keyboards and speakers. The camera was not seeing through every black surface; it was exploiting the particular optical properties and thickness of the material in front of it.

What it could not see through
- It was not a medical imaging device. Near-infrared photography does not penetrate the body like ionizing X-rays, and the phone could not produce diagnostic images.
- It did not defeat metal. Metal and dense barriers blocked the relevant light.
- It was not reliable through all plastic. Thickness, pigment, construction and lighting determined whether near-infrared light reached the sensor.
- It did not guarantee visibility through clothing. Early demonstrations raised privacy concerns after some tests suggested that particular materials might reveal more than users expected; that did not make the camera a universal see-through tool.
Why the feature changed after launch
The clothing-related privacy concerns prompted OnePlus to say it would update the phone to disable or restrict the near-infrared behavior. Android Authority quoted OnePlus explaining that the updated Photochrom filter “uses data about the lighting conditions collected by the Color Filter camera to generate photos with the main camera.”

As a result, the experience depends on the phone’s OxygenOS version and region. A OnePlus 8 Pro running updated software may no longer reproduce the original 2020 demonstrations, even though the underlying camera hardware is still present. Do not assume that a used or refurbished handset will behave like launch-day review units.
How to evaluate a OnePlus 8 Pro today
- Open Settings and check About device for the OxygenOS version and build number.
- Confirm which region the handset is configured for, because firmware behavior can vary by market.
- Open the camera app and look for the Photochrom or Color Filter option; its presence and output are not proof that the unrestricted infrared mode is available.
- If buying used or refurbished, ask the seller for the exact model, software build and an unedited sample taken with the current Photochrom mode.
- Treat any claim that the phone can see through clothing, walls or all black objects as misleading. The effect, where available, is limited to selected materials that transmit near-infrared light.
What the OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera really was
The most accurate description is a smartphone camera with a dedicated near-infrared-sensitive Color Filter sensor and a computational Photochrom mode. Under favorable conditions it could turn normally hidden shapes behind certain thin plastics into visible patterns. That is a striking optical trick, not X-ray imaging, and firmware changes made the original behavior less broadly available.
