No. A speed test on your phone or computer measures that device’s connection, not the throughput reaching your Chromecast. The devices may use different Wi-Fi bands, antennas, locations, or network conditions. To understand buffering or low resolution, compare measurements taken under similar conditions and check the Chromecast’s own network connection.
What a phone or computer speed test tells you
A browser or speed-test app reports how the device running the test connects to the test service at that moment. It can help show whether your home internet or that device’s Wi-Fi connection is slow, but it does not directly measure a Chromecast’s connection. A fast result on a phone therefore does not prove that the Chromecast has equally fast or reliable Wi-Fi.

Even on the same home network, devices can differ in Wi-Fi hardware, signal strength, band, and placement. Internet speed can also vary over time. Google notes that provider network availability, content length, and other factors can affect the speed and the resolution a streaming device can show (Google’s Chromecast and Google TV requirements).

For a more meaningful comparison, keep the conditions as similar as you can. This is a practical approach, not a Google-prescribed test procedure, and it still cannot eliminate differences between devices.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Run the tests close together in time so changing internet or Wi-Fi conditions are less likely to skew the comparison.
- Use the same speed-test service and server if possible. Record download speed, upload speed, latency, and the test time; results from different servers are not directly comparable.
- Put the phone or computer near the Chromecast and connect it to the same Wi-Fi network and, if you can choose, the same band. The phone’s Wi-Fi hardware may still perform differently.
- Check the Chromecast’s network connection: open its network settings on the TV if you have Chromecast with Google TV, or check its connection in the Google Home app for older Chromecast models.
Google’s support pages do not document a universal built-in speed-test procedure for every Chromecast generation. Casting a speed-test page from your phone does not turn it into a Chromecast test: unless the test is actually running on the receiver, it measures the sender or browser’s path.
Is your speed enough for 4K?
Google lists an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for 4K viewing, along with a 4K-capable display. The current requirements page does not state a publication year for that figure. Treat it as a stated minimum, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback or 4K resolution in every situation; actual results can vary with provider availability and other factors.

What to check when Chromecast is slower
If a carefully matched phone test looks much faster than the Chromecast connection, or playback buffers despite a strong phone result, work through the receiving device’s Wi-Fi conditions first. Google’s Chromecast connection troubleshooting guidance includes these checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm the network. Make sure the phone and Chromecast are connected to the intended same Wi-Fi network.
- Check the Wi-Fi band. If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Google advises checking that the Chromecast is using 5 GHz. Whether that helps depends on signal and coverage at the device’s location.
- Restart and update network equipment. Update router firmware if needed, then restart the Chromecast and router or modem.
- Reduce interference. Move the Chromecast away from the TV and cables where possible to reduce Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference.
- Consider coverage and network load. Check whether many devices are using Wi-Fi or the Chromecast is in a weak-coverage area. Google mentions mesh Wi-Fi as one possible coverage measure.
- Consider a wired connection. Google says Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV support Ethernet, but do not have an Ethernet port; an Ethernet adapter is sold separately. Check compatibility for your device before buying one.
These steps can improve a weak or unreliable connection, but none guarantees a fix: the streaming app, content, internet provider, receiver, or local network may be responsible.

- Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming
Buffering and Cast discovery are different problems
If your phone cannot find the Chromecast, that is a Cast discovery problem, not a speed-test result. Google’s Cast discovery troubleshooting documentation identifies the sender app, Cast receiver, and network as possible factors. Try a suitable Cast sender app while both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, but don’t treat successful discovery as proof of fast internet—or failed discovery as proof of low bandwidth.
Also distinguish casting from mirroring: a test running in a phone browser remains a test of the phone’s connection, even if you display that browser on another screen. It only measures the receiver’s connection if the test itself runs on the receiver.
