The camera’s three-axis mechanical gimbal steadies its orientation, but framing, movement pace, exposure, and sound still depend on your choices.
Choose portrait or landscape before you record
Decide where the clip will be published and compose for that shape before you start. Portrait is the natural choice for vertical social posts; landscape suits horizontal video. By default, the Pocket 3 follows the screen’s orientation. DJI also documents Landscape, Portrait, and Auto-Rotation options in settings.

Set up the gimbal for a controlled move
The Pocket 3 uses three-axis mechanical gimbal stabilization. This helps steady the camera’s orientation; it does not decide how quickly you pan or how you compose a shot. A fast turn can still feel abrupt even when the gimbal is stabilizing the camera.

Adjust rotational speed
- Swipe down from the camera view to open Control Center.
- Tap the walking-person icon to adjust rotational speed.
- Start with deliberate, measured movement for a controlled pan. Use a faster response when the subject or scene calls for it, then check whether the framing still feels intentional.
DJI describes rotational-speed options from Default to Fast, with faster response intended for more intense shaking. Choosing a slower, deliberate pace for a controlled pan is practical shooting guidance, not a DJI-prescribed universal setting. Details are on DJI’s product page and support page.
Match the support to the shot
For a stationary, hands-free shot—such as speaking to camera—a supported Mini Tripod can hold the composition. For a moving shot, use the gimbal handheld and keep your own movement measured. The tripod is optional and does not replace the gimbal’s role when the camera is moving. DJI lists supported accessories on its support page.

Use ActiveTrack when it suits the clip
ActiveTrack can keep a selected subject in frame while you move or film yourself. To start, double-tap the subject on the screen. To stop, tap outside the tracking frame or press the joystick once. In the DJI Mimo app, select a subject in the frame and tap the X at the tracking frame to stop.

Tracking is not supported in Low-Light, Panorama, Slow Motion, or Timelapse modes. In those cases—or when you want to control the composition yourself—frame the shot manually. DJI documents the gestures and mode limitations in its support guidance.

Keep exposure separate from stabilization
Gimbal stabilization and exposure are different controls. For simpler operation, leave exposure automatic. If you need direct control, DJI documents manual shutter and ISO adjustment in Pro mode:
- Swipe left to open the relevant camera options.
- Enable Pro mode.
- Choose Exposure – M (Manual) to adjust shutter and ISO.
DJI’s documentation does not prescribe one shutter speed for every scene or claim that a particular manual setting guarantees smoother social video. Choose exposure for the lighting and motion in your shot rather than treating it as a stabilization setting. See the official support page for the documented controls.

Choose audio for the kind of clip you are making
The Pocket 3 has three built-in microphones. For clips where speech matters, those microphones are one option; DJI also lists the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter as compatible. An external transmitter is an optional separate wireless-microphone choice, not a requirement for every recording. DJI lists microphone details and compatibility on its support page.

A quick pre-recording check
- Set and confirm portrait or landscape before recording.
- Choose a rotational-speed response suited to the move, then pan or walk deliberately.
- Decide whether ActiveTrack fits the shot and recording mode.
- Use a tripod for a static hands-free composition; keep it optional for moving shots.
- Choose automatic exposure for simplicity or Pro mode when you need manual shutter and ISO.
- Consider an external transmitter when you want a separate wireless microphone for speech.
