Before buying a Chromebook for a child, ask the school whether it provides a device or requires a particular model, account, or management setup. If you are choosing a personal Chromebook, the Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook Plus is the strongest all-around pick in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison; the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3 is more portable, while the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10 has a keyboard-focused design. School requirements, a child’s typing needs, and how the device will be supervised matter as much as the model name.

Start with the school’s device and account rules

Contact the school or district before purchasing. It may issue Chromebooks, require a particular configuration, or manage a student’s school account. A school-managed device or account can have administrator-set restrictions on apps, websites, and Google services. A personal Chromebook used with a school account may also be subject to school policies. Google explains how school and parent-supervised accounts work on Chromebooks, and Google’s Family Link guidance describes parent supervision on a personal Chromebook.

If the family buys the device, a parent-supervised Google account can provide controls for apps, website access, some device settings, and screen time. Google notes that website filtering is not perfect, so parental controls are not a substitute for supervision. Expect the child’s school and personal accounts to have different rules and experiences.

For school-issued devices, administrators can configure and manage devices centrally. Google for Education lists devices and directs institutions to approved resellers for ChromeOS Education Upgrade, deployment, and training; that procurement path does not mean a particular school supplies a Chromebook to every student. See Google for Education’s Chromebook directory.

Six Chromebooks to consider

Tom’s Guide’s US-oriented buying guide, listed as updated July 8, 2026, recommends three primary picks and covers three further alternatives. Its specifications, impressions, and measurements are that publication’s findings, not tests conducted for this article. Configurations and stock can vary, so confirm the exact model and configuration before buying.

Model What it is suited to Key listed specifications or trade-offs
Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook Plus Best all-around convertible Intel Core i3-1315U, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB eMMC, 14-inch 1920 × 1200 touchscreen, 3.57 pounds. Tom’s Guide praises its screen, performance, keyboard, ports, and build; it notes middling battery life and no included stylus.
Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3 Portable, budget-oriented detachable Snapdragon 7c Gen 2, 4 GB RAM, 64 or 128 GB eMMC, 11-inch 2000 × 1200 display, 2 pounds docked. Keyboard cover is included; drawbacks include a small keyboard, no headphone jack, and weak cameras.
Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10 Convertible for children who type regularly Intel Core 3 N355, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, 14-inch 1920 × 1200 touchscreen. Tom’s Guide praises its keyboard and build but criticizes the dim display and shorter battery life.
Acer Chromebook Plus 515 Larger-screen study and web use Tom’s Guide describes it as a reliable 15-inch value option with good performance; it flags cheap-feeling construction and a spongy trackpad. The cited guide does not state its specific configuration here.
Lenovo Chromebook Plus 15I TN10 Large touchscreen Tom’s Guide cites a 15-inch touchscreen and durable build, while criticizing its price relative to performance and reporting battery life just over eight hours. The cited guide does not state its specific configuration here.
Acer Chromebook 311 Compact, student-oriented alternative Tom’s Guide describes it as portable and rugged, with a screen and older-style design it criticizes. Its review reports more than 13 hours of battery life; check current price and stock rather than relying on a volatile retailer listing.

Best all-around: Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook Plus

Its 14-inch touchscreen and conventional laptop layout are a good fit for a child who will split time between typing, browsing, and using the screen as a tablet. Tom’s Guide measured 12 hours 47 minutes in its Wi-Fi web-browsing test at 150 nits. That is a controlled review result, not a promise of a full school day in every child’s workload.

Most portable: Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3

The detachable design and included keyboard cover give a child a tablet-style option as well as a small laptop. Its 11-inch screen can be easier to carry, but the compact keyboard is less comfortable for sustained writing. Tom’s Guide measured 10 hours 30 minutes in the same Wi-Fi browsing test at 150 nits.

Typing-focused convertible: Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10

Consider it if keyboard comfort and a convertible form matter more than screen brightness or long battery life. Tom’s Guide measured 8 hours 32 minutes in its Wi-Fi browsing test at 150 nits; it also reports 6.5 hours in some mixed-use scenarios, illustrating how workload can change runtime.

Other tested alternatives

The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 and Lenovo Chromebook Plus 15I TN10 offer 15-inch screens for families prioritizing workspace, while the Acer Chromebook 311 is a smaller alternative described as rugged and portable. The guide’s overall selection does not place these three on equal footing with its primary picks, and it does not establish current prices or stock.

Choose by age, workload, and how the child works

Screen size and age

Tom’s Guide suggests an 11-inch display may suit younger children, while children in middle school and older may benefit from a screen of 13 inches or more. Treat that as a starting point, not a grade-level rule: a compact screen is easier to carry, while a larger one can provide more room for documents and split-screen work.

Memory and workload

The guide’s buying advice is 8 GB of RAM for heavier multitasking and several open browser tabs; it says 4 GB may suffice for light browsing and simple play. That is not a universal threshold: consider the school’s applications, the number of tasks the child runs at once, and the exact configuration being sold.

Typing versus portability

For essays and regular sustained typing, prioritize a comfortable, full-size laptop keyboard. A detachable or convertible can offer more ways to position or hold the display, but a small detachable keyboard may be a poor match for long writing assignments. If possible, have the child try the keyboard before purchase.

Durability and daily handling

Compare the case materials, hinge, keyboard, and trackpad, and consider how the device will be carried and cleaned. A manufacturer or review description such as “rugged” is not a guarantee that a Chromebook cannot be damaged. A compatible sleeve or case may be useful, but verify its fit for the exact model.

Check update support for the exact model

Google says Chromebooks released from 2021 onward receive ten years of automatic security and feature updates. The relevant end date is model-specific, so check the exact model identifier against Google’s Auto Update policy list before buying. Do not assume that a similar product name or a different configuration shares the same support date.

What a Chromebook can do offline at school

Students can use Offline Mode in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides and sync changes after reconnecting, according to Google for Education’s overview of Chromebooks for schools. This does not mean every website or application will work without an internet connection; check the school’s specific apps and assignments if offline access is important.

Should you get Chromebook Plus for kids?

Chromebook Plus is a more performance-oriented category, and the cited guide’s primary convertible picks include Chromebook Plus models. A standard Chromebook can still be suitable for lighter web-based school tasks. Choose based on the child’s actual workload and the device’s keyboard, screen, memory, support date, and school compatibility rather than treating the Plus label as a school requirement.
