Yes. You can use a Chromebook without signing in to a Google Account by selecting Browse as Guest on the sign-in screen, provided guest browsing is enabled on the device. Guest mode is temporary: when you exit, ChromeOS deletes the session’s local files, cookies, website data, and browsing activity.
How to start a Chromebook guest session
- If you are signed in, sign out. Guest browsing is selected from the sign-in screen.
- On the sign-in screen, select Browse as Guest.
- When you are finished, open the system menu and select Exit guest. Google says this deletes the guest session’s files, cookies, website data, and browsing activity. See Google’s Chromebook guest instructions.
Google describes this option for temporary or shared use, such as borrowing or lending a Chromebook. It lets you use the device without adding a Chromebook user account.

What works—and what does not—in guest mode
Guest browsing is a limited session, not a substitute for signing in with your Google Account. Google’s Chromebook setup guidance says signed-in users can get their bookmarks, extensions, and apps automatically. In guest mode, saved preferences are unavailable, apps cannot be installed, and there is no Play Store. Google also notes that first-party applications require sign-in and some features, including built-in AI, are unavailable.

Guest mode is not anonymous browsing
Guest mode prevents Chrome from saving browsing activity in the local guest session, but it does not make your activity invisible to others. Google says websites you visit, websites where you sign in, an employer or school, the network operator, your internet service provider, and search engines may receive or see information. Search suggestions may also use your location or activity from the current guest session. Review Google’s explanation of Chromebook guest browsing and its privacy information for guest browsing.

Do not confuse Chromebook’s Browse as Guest with Chrome’s Guest profile on other computers. Google says Chrome Guest mode is not available on Chromebooks; Chromebook users should follow the guest-session instructions instead.
Why “Browse as Guest” may be missing
The option may be disabled. On a personal Chromebook, the owner can check the guest-browsing setting in Settings > Privacy and security > Manage other people. Google’s account and device access guidance explains how to control who can use a Chromebook.

On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, an administrator can allow or block guest mode. Users cannot change that policy themselves; contact the school or workplace administrator. Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education guidance describes management of guest mode on managed devices.

That suggestion does not override a policy that disables guest access.
