To make a Chromebook last longer between charges, lower the screen brightness, close apps and tabs you are not using, and turn on Battery Saver when you need extra runtime. Battery Saver reduces power use but can also lower performance. Charging controls such as Adaptive charging and Charge limit serve a different purpose: they are intended to support long-term battery health, not extend the charge you have right now.
What to change first when your Chromebook battery drains quickly
- Lower the display brightness. Use a level that remains comfortable to read; a brighter display uses more power.
- Close unused apps and tabs. This is especially useful when you have resource-intensive work open, such as video or games.
- Turn on Battery Saver when unplugged. Open Settings → System preferences → Power, then enable Battery Saver. If the menu differs, search Settings for “Battery Saver.” Google says the option is unavailable while the Chromebook is plugged in and turns off automatically when charging begins. Battery Saver lowers display brightness, turns off keyboard backlighting, enables Chrome Energy Saver, enables Android Battery Saver when Android apps are used, and throttles the CPU. These changes can help conserve power, but the dimmer display and reduced CPU performance may be noticeable. Google does not specify a guaranteed number of extra minutes or hours.

Battery Saver and optimized charging do different jobs
Battery Saver is for reducing power use during the current unplugged session. Optimized charging changes how the Chromebook charges to help manage long-term battery health. Google explains that spending extended periods fully charged can reduce battery capacity over time. Adaptive charging and Charge limit may not be available on every Chromebook, and administrator policy can affect access. With either option active, the device may not fully charge. Turn the feature off or use “Fully charge now,” if shown, when you need a full charge. The 80% behavior is a charging setting, not a promise of longer runtime on the current charge. If the battery still drains quickly
Notice when the drain happens
Check whether the battery falls quickly during active use or while the Chromebook is idle. Also note whether the change began after you started a more demanding workload or installed software. These clues can help narrow the issue, but fast drain alone does not identify a particular app or hardware fault; there is no single cause established for all Chromebook models.
Check for ChromeOS updates
- Open Settings → About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates.
- If an update prompts you to restart, restart the Chromebook to complete it.
Google says updates bring current features and security improvements, but an update is not a guaranteed fix for battery drain. Google Chromebook Help: Update your Chromebook’s operating system.

Gather model-specific details before considering service
If runtime remains unusually short, record the Chromebook model and the conditions in which you use it, such as the workload and whether the device is idle or active when the drain occurs. Include any battery diagnostic information available on your device when contacting support or a repair provider. A model-independent replacement threshold or compatible replacement battery cannot be determined without details about the Chromebook.

Google’s guidance describes power-saving controls and update steps, but it does not establish one expected battery runtime for every Chromebook. Battery capacity and observed runtime depend on the device and how it is used, so no universal runtime increase or replacement cutoff can be promised from these settings alone.
