Chrome Won’t Open? Diagnose the Launch, Crash, or Page Problem

Check whether Chrome fails to launch, crashes, or only one page fails. Then follow targeted steps for stuck processes, security software, extensions, and network errors.

First identify what “won’t open” means: Chrome may fail to launch, launch and then freeze or close, or open normally while one website fails to load. For a desktop launch failure, check for a stuck Chrome process, restart the computer, and check whether security software is blocking it before reinstalling. If only a page fails, test it in another browser to separate a Chrome issue from a website or network problem.

Which Chrome problem are you seeing?

  • Chrome does not appear: follow the launch checks below.
  • Chrome opens, then freezes or closes: reduce the browser’s workload and check extensions or hardware acceleration.
  • Chrome opens, but a page will not load: compare the same page in another browser and use any displayed error code to guide troubleshooting.

Google’s desktop troubleshooting guide covers launch failures and crashes; its common error-message guide addresses page and connection errors.

What to do when Chrome will not launch on a computer

1. Close a Chrome process that is already running

Chrome can remain active in the background even if no window is visible. On Windows, open Task Manager, select Google Chrome or a chrome.exe process, and choose End task. On Mac, open the Apple menu, choose Force Quit, select Google Chrome, and confirm. Then try launching Chrome again.

2. Restart the computer

Restarting can clear a stuck process or interference from another running program. Try this before uninstalling Chrome.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

3. Check security software

Google notes that antivirus software or unwanted malware can prevent Chrome from opening. Check your security software’s alerts or settings to see whether it blocked Chrome, and follow that product’s instructions. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled as a troubleshooting shortcut.

4. Reinstall only if simpler checks fail

Google recommends uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome if the earlier steps do not resolve a launch failure. On a computer, Google’s uninstall instructions include an option to delete browsing data; selecting it removes that data from the device, so consider the consequence before choosing it. See Google’s Chrome troubleshooting instructions.

If Chrome launches but crashes or freezes

Reduce what is running

Close extra tabs, extensions, and other apps to free memory. If Chrome stays open long enough, test it after removing extensions that may be causing trouble.

Test hardware acceleration

If the browser remains usable, open Chrome’s Settings, go to System, turn off Use graphics acceleration when available (the exact label may vary), and restart Chrome. If Settings will not open because Chrome is unstable, move to the launch and reinstall checks rather than treating a settings reset as a fix for an app that cannot run.

If only one website fails to load

Open the same address in another browser, such as Firefox or Safari. If it works there, investigate Chrome-specific causes such as extensions. If it fails there too, the issue may be the network or the website. Restart the modem and router; if the problem persists, contact the website owner.

Error messages can narrow the path. Google defines ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED as a device that is not connected to the internet, while ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT means the page took too long to connect. These indicate a connection or page-loading problem, not necessarily a failure to launch Chrome.

If Chrome will not install again

When reinstalling fails, Google advises checking the internet connection and whether the device meets Chrome’s system requirements, then downloading the installation file again. If needed, use an offline installer. Check available storage for certain installation errors, and remember that antivirus software can also interfere with installation. Follow Google’s Chrome installation troubleshooting.

When to update Chrome or check system requirements

Chrome normally updates in the background after it is closed and reopened. If it launches, use Google’s update instructions to check the installed version and apply an available update. Operating-system support changes over time; check Google’s current requirements for your device rather than relying on an older OS cutoff.

Why resetting settings is a different step

Resetting Chrome settings affects selected items such as startup pages, extensions, and content settings. Google advises reinstalling Chrome if the Settings menu is missing or will not open. A settings reset is therefore not a general remedy for a browser that cannot launch. See Google’s reset guidance.

Android: try the simpler recovery steps

For Chrome on Android, close excess tabs and apps, restart Chrome, and restart the device if needed. Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance covers these steps.
