Chrome Using Too Much RAM? What Memory Saver Can—and Can’t—Do

Chrome’s Memory Saver can deactivate eligible unused tabs, but it cannot explain the title’s 30GB claim by itself. Learn how to enable it and investigate memory use.

Chrome’s desktop Memory Saver can reduce memory pressure by deactivating eligible tabs you are not using. It is a possible fix for high memory use, not a confirmed explanation for the “30GB RAM” claim in the supplied title: the specific tweak and the measurement behind that number are not established here. You can enable Memory Saver in Chrome’s settings, then use Chrome Task Manager to investigate which tabs or processes are consuming memory.

What Chrome Memory Saver does

Google says Memory Saver “deactivates tabs that you aren’t currently using” to save computer memory and help active tabs run smoothly. An inactive tab reloads when you return to it. That means the feature can free memory held by eligible tabs, but it trades some of that memory for a reload when you revisit them.

Memory Saver does not deactivate every tab that is in the background. Google lists activities and states that can keep a tab active, including media or calls, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices. If a particular site needs to stay active, add it through Chrome’s “Always keep these sites active” control.

How to turn on Memory Saver

  1. In desktop Chrome, open Settings → Performance → Memory Saver.
  2. Choose a level: Moderate, Balanced, or Maximum. Google labels Balanced as recommended. The levels deactivate eligible inactive tabs at progressively shorter intervals; choose based on how soon you are comfortable with unused tabs becoming inactive and reloading when reopened.
  3. If a site should not be deactivated, add it under Always keep these sites active.

These are Chrome desktop instructions from Google’s current Help documentation. The setting manages eligible tabs; it is not a control that guarantees a particular amount of memory savings.

Which Memory Saver level should you choose?

Level How to think about it Trade-off
Moderate Choose when you want Chrome to wait longer before deactivating unused tabs. Tabs may remain active longer, so memory savings may be less aggressive.
Balanced (recommended) Chrome’s recommended middle option for balancing memory saving with keeping tabs ready. Unused eligible tabs can still reload when you return to them.
Maximum Choose when you want eligible unused tabs to become inactive sooner. You may encounter reloads more often when returning to tabs.

Google’s Help page describes the current levels as Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum. An earlier 2024 announcement used the names Standard, Balanced, and Advanced; use the labels shown in your current Chrome settings.

Inspect Chrome’s Task Manager

Chrome’s built-in Task Manager can help identify whether memory use is concentrated in a tab or another browser process. Open Chrome’s menu and choose More tools → Task Manager, then inspect the memory figures for the listed tabs and processes. This helps narrow down where to investigate; it does not by itself prove why a page is using memory.

Investigate a page with DevTools

If one page appears responsible and you need a deeper diagnosis, Chrome DevTools provides memory investigation tools, including memory timelines and allocation tools. These are aimed at examining a page’s memory behavior rather than simply comparing the browser’s overall memory total.

A number shown for Chrome in your operating system is not automatically the memory used by one tab, nor is it equivalent to a page’s JavaScript heap. Chrome uses multiple processes, and memory accounting and reclaim behavior depend on system conditions. Treat browser-wide, process, and page-level readings as different measurements.

What the “30GB RAM” claim does not establish

The title’s 30GB figure is anecdotal framing, not an independently verified measurement or a general benchmark. It does not establish that Chrome typically uses that much memory, identify a particular tab or extension as the cause, or show that a RAM upgrade would fix the underlying issue. The specific tweak is also not identified, so Memory Saver should be understood as one documented option—not as the confirmed tweak behind the title.

When Google announced Memory Saver for desktop Chrome in 2022, it said the feature could use “up to 40% and 10GB less memory” in the context described in that announcement. That was an up-to claim by Google, not an independent test or a promise for any particular computer; it does not predict a reduction from 30GB on your system.
