A fresh The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom playthrough feels different when you change your rules, not just your route through the main story. Try exploring the sky or Depths first, limiting your tools, or making travel and crafting part of the challenge. Nintendo frames Hyrule as an open-ended journey across its surface, sky islands, and underground world, so you can choose a new priority for each run (Nintendo’s game overview).
Choose a new world to explore first
Changing which layer of Hyrule gets your attention can reshape the whole adventure. These runs work best when you treat your chosen layer as the priority, rather than a brief detour before returning to your usual routine.
1. Make the sky your first expedition
Prioritize floating islands, aerial routes, and ways to return to the sky with Recall. Leave most surface exploration for later. Nintendo describes the game’s “mysterious islands floating in the vast skies above” on its game overview.
2. Descend into the Depths first
Make chasms and Lightroots your main map. Return to the surface when you need supplies or reach a story gate, then head back underground. Nintendo presents the Depths as a distinct layer to explore alongside the surface and sky (game overview).

#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
- Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
- Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
- Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.
3. Swap your regional order
Choose a sequence of regions you did not follow on your first run, and complete the local objectives you set before moving on. This gives familiar quests a different context without requiring an arbitrary restriction. Nintendo’s open-ended framing supports players choosing their own path through Hyrule (game overview).
Change what counts as progress
Instead of letting the main story dictate every session, set a different milestone for advancement: solving shrines, completing a region, or adding designs to a collection.
4. Let shrines drive progression
Make shrines your primary advancement loop and delay major story objectives. Set a personal milestone—such as completing a chosen group of shrines—before returning to the main quest. Nintendo describes shrines as challenges or puzzles scattered across Hyrule (game overview).
5. Turn Autobuild into a memory challenge
Once you have Autobuild, allow yourself to use only designs you have saved or discovered. Treat each new blueprint as a milestone, and resist rebuilding a familiar machine from scratch. Nintendo’s official guide explains that Autobuild recreates structures previously made with Ultrahand.

- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
6. Make collecting your checklist
Pick a collection goal—such as documenting a set of locations or finding a particular category of items—and let it determine where you go next. This is a flexible option if you want a long-term objective without imposing a combat or movement restriction.
Put limits on your tools and solutions
Restrictions work best when they are clear but not brittle: follow the chosen rule whenever there is a fair alternative, and make an exception if the game blocks progress.
7. Build a one-ability run
Choose Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, or Recall as your defining ability. Avoid solving problems with the other abilities whenever your chosen tool offers a reasonable solution. Nintendo identifies these four abilities on its official guide.
8. Commit to a Fuse theme
Choose a palette—elemental materials, monster parts, or utility objects—and fuse weapons within it. A theme gives resource choices a purpose beyond using whichever item seems strongest. Nintendo notes that monster parts can be fused to weapons and used in elixirs (game overview).

9. Take on an Ultrahand engineering brief
Before building, define what the machine must do: make a cheap land vehicle, a stable flyer, or a rescue platform. Keep the brief specific enough to judge whether a design works, but leave the engineering to you. Nintendo’s guide to Ultrahand covers construction and using Autobuild to recreate designs.
10. Use Recall to make your own routes
When a fallen object can help, use Recall to gain height or retrace a path instead of defaulting to an ordinary climb. The rule turns environmental objects into route-planning tools. Nintendo describes Recall as moving objects in motion backward through time (game overview).

Mobility and supplies shape how often you engage with the world between destinations. Changing those habits can make familiar distances and encounters matter again.
11. Go on a no-fast-travel pilgrimage
Travel on foot, horseback, by glider, or in vehicles you build. Use towers and shrines as landmarks, but avoid fast travel so that reaching the next destination is part of the adventure. This rule brings Hyrule’s different layers and construction systems into your regular route (game overview; official guide).

12. Make field cooking and crafting your preparation loop
Use monster-part fusions and elixirs as your main preparation routine; sell or ignore stockpiled alternatives if you want the rule to have teeth. Nintendo documents monster parts as materials for both fused weapons and elixirs (game overview).
Add a collection ritual with amiibo
After unlocking the amiibo rune, you can add a daily scan to a collector-focused run. Treat any rewards as optional bonuses, not required gear or progression. Nintendo confirms compatible amiibo scanning after the rune is unlocked on its official guide.
Pick the rule that matches your next run
| What you want to change | Try | What becomes the focus |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration emphasis | Sky-first, Depths-first, or a new regional order | Which layer or region you prioritize |
| Tool use | One-ability, Fuse theme, or engineering brief | How you solve traversal and combat problems |
| Progression | Shrine milestones or a collection checklist | What you count as meaningful progress |
| Mobility | No-fast-travel pilgrimage or Recall routes | How you reach your next destination |
| Preparation | Monster-part crafting and elixirs | How you turn gathered resources into useful gear |
You can combine compatible rules—for example, a Depths-first run with a no-fast-travel rule—or keep one restriction at a time. A useful challenge makes you notice different options; it should not turn every obstacle into a reason to abandon the run.
