Chrome Saved Your Image as WebP? Why It Happens and How to Convert It Locally

Chrome may save the WebP image a site serves. Here’s how to convert it to JPG or PNG locally, keep the original, and avoid a misleading file rename.

Chrome usually saves the image format the website or its delivery service sent—not a format Chrome necessarily created during download. To make a JPG or PNG without uploading the file, save the WebP to your device, open it in a locally installed editor or conversion utility, and export a copy in the format you need.

Why Chrome saves an image as WebP

WebP is an image format, not a Chrome-specific file type. A website, server, or content-delivery layer may choose WebP for browsers that say they can display it. Google describes this format negotiation through the HTTP Accept request header: a browser can advertise that it accepts image/webp, and a server can respond with a WebP image. Google’s WebP FAQ explains the mechanism.

That distinction matters: Chrome’s ability to display WebP can make it eligible to receive one, but the site or delivery layer chooses what representation to send. Chrome may then save the representation it received; that does not mean it converted a JPEG or PNG during “Save Image As.” Even a page address ending in .jpg does not, by itself, prove that the delivered response was JPEG.

This is a general explanation, not a diagnosis of a particular site. If you need the original uploaded file rather than the version served on a page, look for a download or original-image link, or ask the rights holder. Converting a served copy cannot restore details or original quality that are absent from that copy.

Save the image before converting it

On desktop, Google’s documented Chrome workflow is to open the page, right-click the image, and choose Save Image As. Chrome Help documents this image-saving workflow. The reviewed Chrome Help material does not document a preference that forces images to save as JPG or PNG.

Save the file somewhere you can find it, such as your Downloads folder. Confirm that its name ends in .webp before opening it in a converter.

Convert WebP on your device, without uploading

For a local conversion, use a desktop application or command-line utility installed on your device. The file is opened and converted locally; you do not need to send it to a website. A browser-based converter does not meet the no-upload requirement because it requires sending the image to that service.

Use a graphical image editor

  1. Open the saved WebP file in an installed image editor that supports WebP.
  2. Choose the editor’s export or save-a-copy option, and select JPEG/JPG or PNG as the output format.
  3. Choose a new filename and destination so you keep the original WebP.
  4. Open the exported copy to check that it displays correctly and has the transparency, dimensions, and appearance you need.

Google notes that image-editing tools have added WebP support, but available formats and menu labels vary by application and version. Check the documentation for your installed editor if it cannot open the file or does not offer the output format you need. Google’s WebP overview describes the format and its tool ecosystem.

Use a command-line tool

Google lists dwebp and cwebp in the open-source libwebp utility suite, with precompiled tools available for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Google’s precompiled-tools page covers availability. The exact command and supported output options depend on the installed version, so consult that version’s help or official tools documentation rather than guessing a command.

A typical local workflow is to save the WebP, use an installed utility to decode or convert it, and open the resulting file to verify it. Keep the source file until you have checked the output.

Choose JPG or PNG based on what the image needs

Format Useful when Trade-off
JPEG/JPG You have a photo and want a broadly compatible format where smaller files may be useful. JPEG uses lossy compression. Exporting a lossy WebP as JPEG can add another lossy encoding step.
PNG You need lossless output or transparency support. The resulting file may be larger; its size depends on the image and export settings.

WebP itself supports both lossy and lossless compression. Google’s format overview reports that lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than PNG files, and that lossy WebP files are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG files at equivalent SSIM quality. These are Google’s general format comparisons, accessed in 2026—not guaranteed savings or quality results for a particular image or conversion. See Google’s WebP overview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conversion cannot recover image detail already discarded by a lossy source. If quality matters, retain the original WebP and compare the exported copy at the size where you plan to use it.

What not to do

  • Do not just rename the extension. Changing .webp to .jpg or .png changes the filename, not the image’s encoded format.
  • Do not assume Chrome changed the format. A site or delivery layer may have served WebP in the first place.
  • Do not use an online converter for a file that must stay on your device. Use an installed editor or local utility instead.
