Chrome Mobile Translate Button Missing: How to Translate Pages and Restore the Prompt

If Chrome’s translation prompt is missing, open the page and try More > Translate. If Translate is unavailable or does not work, refresh the page and check that translation offers are enabled in Chrome’s language settings. Google notes that a language may not be available for translation.

Try the manual Translate command first

Open the webpage in Chrome, tap More beside the address bar, then tap Translate. This manual option is available on Android and iPhone or iPad even when the top-of-page prompt does not appear. Menu placement and labels may vary as Chrome changes.

Fix a missing Translate prompt on Android

1. Refresh the webpage. If Translate still cannot be tapped, Google says the page’s language might not be available for translation.
2. Turn on translation offers. Go to More > Settings > Languages. Under Translation settings, turn on Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate.
3. Check the target language. Go to More > Settings > Languages > Advanced > Translate into this language and select the language you want pages translated into.
4. Review language exceptions. In Languages, check Don’t offer to translate these languages. If a language is listed there, remove or adjust it. Android also has an Automatically translate these languages list, which you can change as needed.

Fix a missing Translate prompt on iPhone or iPad

1. Refresh the webpage. If Chrome still does not offer translation, the language might not be available for translation.
2. Enable page translation. Go to More > Settings > Languages and turn on Translate pages.
3. Review the page’s language settings. In Languages, add a language if needed and select Offer to translate. If you previously chose Never translate for that language, undo that choice.
4. Set automatic translation if you prefer it. When Chrome displays a translated page, choose Always translate [language] to have Chrome translate that language automatically.

Understand which language setting to change

Chrome’s app display language controls the language used for Chrome’s interface; it is not the same as the target language for translated webpages. On Android, the translation target is selected separately under Languages > Advanced > Translate into this language. Changing Chrome’s menu language alone does not select the language pages should be translated into.

What the available fixes can—and cannot—tell you

Google’s guidance points to three checks: try the manual Translate command, confirm translation offers are enabled, and consider whether Chrome can translate the page’s language. Refreshing is Google’s stated troubleshooting step. Its guidance does not identify one universal cause for a missing prompt or promise that changing a setting will restore it in every case. It also does not provide a complete current list of translatable languages.
