That distinction helps you choose a low-risk fix instead of resetting the browser prematurely. Work through the checks below in order; memory pressure, extensions, graphics hardware, a website, network trouble, or device software can all contribute, and no single fix is guaranteed.
First, find out what is freezing
Notice what stops responding and whether anything else is affected. A page that stalls while the rest of Chrome works points to a different possibility than a browser window or computer that becomes unresponsive.

- One website: Try another site, then open the affected site in a different browser. If only one site fails, the site itself may be the issue.
- Several websites: Check whether your internet connection works in other apps and whether other devices can connect. A network problem, firewall, or antivirus software may interfere with loading.
- Chrome as a whole: If tabs and controls stop responding across sites, check resource use, extensions, and Chrome updates.
- The whole computer or Chromebook: If other apps or the operating system also freeze, troubleshoot the device rather than treating this only as a Chrome setting.
Google lists memory, extensions, browser settings, cookies, websites, network conditions, and device software among possible contributors to loading problems. Its Chrome page-loading troubleshooting guide offers additional checks.
Update Chrome, then relaunch it
Chrome updates usually install in the background, but an update may not take effect until you restart the browser. Check for one before moving to more disruptive steps.

- In Chrome, open More (the three-dot menu) > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Allow Chrome to check for updates. If an update is available, follow the prompt to install it.
- Select Relaunch if prompted, then see whether the freezing returns.
Menu wording can change. Check Google’s instructions for updating Chrome if the path looks different.
Reduce the workload on your computer
Many open tabs, apps, downloads, and extensions can compete for memory and other system resources. Google notes that a computer may run out of memory while trying to load a site alongside apps, extensions, and programs. Close what you do not need and check whether Chrome becomes more responsive.
- Close unused tabs and browser windows.
- Quit applications you are not using and pause downloads if they are putting the device under load.
- Turn off extensions you do not need, using the extension test below to isolate any conflicts.
To see which Chrome tasks are using memory, open Chrome’s More menu > More tools > Task Manager. Sort by the Memory footprint column, if available, to find unusually resource-heavy tasks. Select a task and choose End process only if you are comfortable closing it: unsaved work in that tab or task may be lost. Google’s tips for improving Chrome’s speed include closing unused tabs and disabling extensions you do not use.

Check whether an extension or browsing session is involved
Open the affected site in an Incognito window as a diagnostic. If it behaves differently there, an extension or another difference between the normal and Incognito sessions may be involved; this test does not prove that one extension is the cause.
- Open Chrome’s More menu and choose New Incognito window.
- Visit the site that was freezing and see whether the behavior changes.
- If it does, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions in a normal window.
- Turn extensions off, then test the site. Re-enable them one at a time, testing between changes, to identify whether a particular extension is associated with the problem.
Incognito changes more than just extensions, so treat the comparison as a clue rather than a diagnosis. Google explains extension checks and related loading steps in its troubleshooting guide.
Try turning off hardware acceleration
If Chrome freezes or crashes across pages, graphics processing is another possibility. As a reversible test, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, restart Chrome, and check whether the problem changes.

- Open More > Settings > System.
- Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Select Relaunch if Chrome offers it, then test the pages that previously froze.
If the setting is absent or the problem persists, restore it to its previous state. A graphics driver or graphics-intensive content, such as 3D imagery or video, can also be relevant; Google’s guidance about GPU-process slowdowns is specifically for managed Windows accounts, so it should not be read as a diagnosis for every computer. Separate network trouble from a Chrome problem
If multiple sites fail to load, test your connection outside Chrome. Check whether other apps can reach the internet and, if possible, whether another device on the same network can. Restarting a modem or router may help when the connection itself is the problem. If security software or a firewall is blocking connections, check its settings or ask the device administrator before changing protections.
If only one site fails in Chrome but opens elsewhere, the evidence points away from a general browser freeze. The site may be having trouble, or a browser setting, cookie, or extension may affect that site. Google’s page-loading guide covers these possibilities.

For a Chromebook that freezes as a device
ChromeOS instructions apply when the Chromebook itself is crashing or freezing—not just when a Chrome tab stalls. Google recommends starting with actions that do not reset the device:
- Turn the Chromebook off, then back on.
- Close unnecessary apps and browser windows.
- If one page triggers the freeze, hard-refresh it with Ctrl + Shift + R.
- Remove apps or extensions installed shortly before the problem began.
- Use the Diagnostics app to investigate possible memory trouble.
If those steps do not help, Google’s Chromebook crash and freeze guidance describes reset or recovery options and points readers to the Chromebook manufacturer for continued problems. Reset and recovery affect more than Chrome, so check Google’s device-specific instructions and understand the consequences before proceeding.
Reset Chrome only after simpler checks
A settings reset is broader than clearing one troublesome tab: it changes the search engine, homepage and startup tabs, new-tab page, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Google says saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. Review the full Chrome reset instructions before using the option.

- Open More > Settings.
- Choose Reset settings.
- Select Restore settings to their original defaults, then confirm.
Because the reset changes settings and site data, try it only after checking updates, resource use, extensions, and the relevant network or device causes.
When to reinstall Chrome or seek help
Google says reinstalling Chrome can help with some problems, particularly when you cannot open Chrome settings. Follow Google’s Chrome uninstall and reinstall instructions for your operating system. If the entire device continues to freeze, use the support path for that platform; on a Chromebook, contact the manufacturer if Google’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve it. Avoid unverified “cleaner” utilities: they are not a substitute for isolating the cause.
Also verify that your operating system still meets Chrome’s current requirements. The requirements listed by Google include Windows 10 or later for Intel processor systems, Windows 11 or later for ARM processor systems, macOS 13 Ventura or later, and certain 64-bit Linux distributions and processors. These requirements can change; consult Google’s current Chrome system requirements for the latest supported configurations.
