Chrome’s inactive-tab setting can move older tabs out of the main tab view, but it is a tab-organization feature—not a verified way to improve phone memory or speed. On Android, tabs unused for 14 days move to Inactive tabs; on iPhone and iPad, choose Never move to keep inactive tabs from being moved there.
What Chrome’s inactive-tab setting does
Chrome moves inactive tabs out of the regular tab view so they are grouped separately. Moving a tab does not immediately delete it: you can still find inactive tabs in the tab switcher and reopen them. The rules differ by platform, so use the instructions for your device.

Change inactive-tab behavior on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More.
- Tap Settings, then Tabs and tab groups.
- Tap Move to inactive section.

Prevent automatic closure after six months
Android has a separate rule: tabs and tab groups in the Inactive section are automatically closed after six months. To avoid that, turn off Automatically close inactive items in the inactive-tabs settings. Google Chrome Help: Manage tabs in Chrome on Android.

Change inactive-tab behavior on iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and go to Settings.
- Tap Tabs and tab groups, then Inactive.
- Choose Never move to stop Chrome moving inactive tabs into that section. Google Chrome Help: Manage tabs in Chrome on iPhone and iPad.
Find and reopen an inactive tab
Open Switch Tabs, tap Inactive Tabs, then select the tab you want to reopen. Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions describe moving tabs, but do not state the same six-month automatic-closure rule documented for Android.

Does this setting improve Chrome’s memory use?
Google’s help pages describe where Chrome organizes older tabs and, on Android, when it closes them. They do not establish that changing the setting frees a specific amount of memory, makes Chrome faster, or prevents the phone from closing background apps. Treat this as a way to manage the tab list, not a confirmed performance fix.
