If a fixed or sticky header appears repeatedly in a full-page screenshot, first check whether your capture tool scrolls the page and stitches multiple viewport images. In that workflow, the header can be included in more than one segment. For a page you control, test a temporary, page-specific CSS override that returns the header to normal document flow, capture the page, then restore the original styling and inspect the result. A single full-page capture is a different method and may need a different diagnosis.
Why a header can appear more than once
A position: fixed header stays attached to the viewport; a position: sticky element can likewise remain visible as the page scrolls past its threshold. A capture library that scrolls through the document and joins viewport screenshots may therefore record the header in several segments. The documentation for puppeteer-full-page-screenshot version 1.2.5 specifically warns that sticky elements may appear multiple times in its stitched output and recommends resetting them with custom styles.
That explanation is scoped to scroll-and-stitch capture. Do not assume Chrome’s own screenshot command or every Puppeteer full-page screenshot works by stitching, and do not treat repeated headers as proof that the CSS is wrong. Confirm how the image is produced and whether duplication is already present in the captured bitmap or is introduced by later processing.
Identify the capture method first
- Chrome command line: the
--screenshotflag captures the target page; Chrome’s command-line reference documents--window-sizeas a companion for setting capture dimensions. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference. - Puppeteer full-page capture:
page.screenshot({ fullPage: true })is documented to capture the full page. Puppeteer’s screenshot options also includecaptureBeyondViewport; these options describe capture behavior, not a universal correction for fixed headers. See the ScreenshotOptions interface and Screenshots guide. - Element capture: Puppeteer supports capturing a specific element with
ElementHandle.screenshot(). This can be useful when the desired output is a particular component rather than a full document; it does not itself resolve full-page layout behavior. - Scroll-and-stitch library: inspect its capture steps to confirm whether it scrolls and merges viewport images. The package warning above applies to this type of workflow.
Chrome’s documentation does not identify a dedicated flag that prevents duplicate fixed or sticky headers. Changing a full-page option is not a guaranteed fix; test capture modes against the page in question.

Test a CSS reset for a stitched screenshot
For a page you control and a confirmed scroll-and-stitch workflow, temporarily override the specific header’s positioning so it participates in normal document flow during capture. There is no universal selector or CSS override: inspect the page and target the actual header element. For example, if the page uses .site-header, a capture-only style might be:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
.site-header {
position: static !important;
top: auto !important;
}
This is an illustrative, page-specific starting point, not a documented Chrome setting. The package’s guidance supports resetting sticky positioning; the exact selector and declarations must match the site’s layout. Returning the header to normal flow can preserve its content once in the document, while simply hiding it may leave an empty gap where it used to be. Check for related positioning rules, placeholder spacing, and scripts that reapply styles during scrolling.
Apply and restore styles safely
- Record the original viewport dimensions and browser version, then save the page’s existing header styles or use a disposable page context.
- Apply the override only for the screenshot run and only to the relevant header selector.
- Capture the page using the same stitched workflow that produced the duplicate.
- Inspect the output for a single header, missing content, unexpected gaps, or altered layout.
- Restore the original styles and confirm that the ordinary page appearance is unchanged.
Compare capture choices when the page is not stitched
If your workflow uses a single full-page operation, test the documented capture modes separately instead of applying a stitching-specific workaround by default.
Recommended Free Tools
| Capture approach | Scope | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Chrome CLI --screenshot |
Target page image; --window-size controls capture dimensions. |
Repeat with recorded dimensions and browser version. The CLI reference does not promise a fixed-header correction. |
Puppeteer fullPage: true |
Full-page screenshot. | Compare with the default viewport capture and review the rendered bitmap. The API describes capture behavior, not a universal header outcome. |
Puppeteer captureBeyondViewport |
Controls capture beyond the viewport. | Test its effect in your page and Puppeteer version; it is not documented as a duplicate-header switch. |
Puppeteer ElementHandle.screenshot() |
One selected element. | Use when a component image is sufficient rather than a whole-page screenshot. |
| Scroll-and-stitch library | Multiple viewport images joined into a page image. | Check for repeated sticky elements; test a temporary, specific CSS reset. |
Check browser version and dimensions
When reproducing the issue, keep the viewport fixed and record the browser version so that comparisons are meaningful. Chrome’s command-line reference pairs --screenshot with --window-size. Chromium’s Headless README notes that, as of M132, the old Headless functionality is no longer part of the Chrome binary; users who depend on that old functionality should migrate to chrome-headless-shell. This is implementation context, not a remedy for repeated headers. See the Headless Chromium README.

Troubleshoot common outcomes
- The header repeats only in a stitched output: verify that the library scrolls and merges viewport captures. Test a page-specific positioning reset during capture, then restore the original styling.
- The header disappears and leaves a gap: the override may hide the element or remove it from layout. Try returning it to normal flow rather than hiding it, and inspect the page’s spacing rules.
- The header is still duplicated after the reset: confirm that the selector matches the rendered header and that another sticky element or script is not recreating it. Also check whether duplication happens in the capture or in later image processing.
- A full-page Puppeteer capture still looks wrong: compare the viewport and full-page modes, and try an element screenshot if only one component is required. Puppeteer’s options do not guarantee identical fixed-header behavior across pages.
- Results differ across machines or runs: record the browser version and viewport dimensions, and keep the capture method constant. For old Headless-dependent workflows on Chrome M132 and later, consult the Chromium migration note.

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot through one GET request. The API can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. It also reports page verdict and billing status in response headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.
For example, with an API key, save a WebP screenshot of the target page like this (the API parameters and options are documented in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://example.com
-o shot.webp
